Entre Rios, Argentina Cattle Mutilation Investigation

Our friend Scott Corrales of Inexplicata - The Journal of Hispanic Ufology has been reporting on recent animal mutilations and and investigations in Argentina. If you are familiar with Scott's prior reports then you'll know that Argentina has been a hotbed for anomalous activity for quite some time:

The Investigation:

Given its proximity to the scene of the events, a team was organized on June 29th, formed by Luis Brussa, Oscar Mendoza and Ariel Maderna. We reported quickly to the scene, initially visiting the Sheriff’s Office at Cerrito. Having advised the police of our presence in the area, we were escorted by a unit to the location where the remains of 2 of the 5 animals could be found.

At the site we were welcomed by Sgt. Juan Ramon Muller of the Puerto Curtiembre barracks, accompanied by cattleman Jose Luis Estrada. We went to inspect the animal remains, which displayed advanced signs of decomposition due to the time that elapsed between the moment we learned of the story and our arrival at the site.

José Estrada told us that his animals stampeded on the night of the event. He had locked them in a pen, protected by tall poles and wiring, but something or someone had frightened a total of 100 animals, causing them break into a frantic run, bursting through the fencing and entering a narrow trail some 50 meters long that leads into an open field, fleeing in every direction and even crossing three rows of electrified fence. One of the animals fell 1000 meters from the pasture and the second 500 meters ahead, as it sought to find the exit gate.

So we began by taking photos of the animal remains from several angles while Oscar Mendoza and Luis Brussa made Geiger counter checks to dismiss the possibility of any radioactive traces whatsoever in the area surrounding the animals. This was done pursuant to the hypothesis that the agent of factor behind this mutilation is unknown to man, whether terrestrial or not, and because such alterations had already been reported in the United States.

The dead animals presented a series of incisions on their left sides, on the front of their heads, with the type of anal damage produced by carrion animals. Their eyes were also missing.

According to Jose Estrada, the owner of the field, when he found the animals they only presented incisions over the left front shoulder bone, as well as signs of tearing produced by an alleged animal attack. One of them had bites on its muzzle, while another – still alive – showed signs of similar bite marks on the same location.

This was further confirmed by an examination performed by a veterinarian from the town of Maria Grande, who reported to the scene a few hours after the finds. She had been contacted by the Cerrito police department, as a professional examination is requested after such discoveries are made. The veterinarian made the incisions we can see in the photographs, in an effort to see if any organs or viscera were missing. This veterinarian both specializes in, and has followed, the various animal deaths in Entre Rios, whether mutilated or not.

We were able to ascertain the deaths of two of the five animals reported in the area. The other three were found in a neighboring field, belonging to Mr. Franco Lorenzutti.

After being invited by the sergeant back to the Puerto Curtiembre barracks to examine the photos he’d taken the day after the event. While reviewing the images, we were startled by the visibility of the blood spilled in the area where the 5 dead bovines were found. This was presumably the work of some predator between the 18th and the 24th of June. None of these bovines, from what we could see, had been devoured.

This prompted us to contact veterinarian Gladys Uzman, who conducted the initial work at the site, to glean her first observations. “Out of all the examined animals, and after having made incisions to see if any organs were missing and subsequently thrown out, only torn tissue and muscle was found, as one would expect from a predator attack. Hence the presence of blood at the site. Another animal presented a strong bite on its muzzle, made by some not-very-small animal, which had broken and crushed the bones.

When asked if she had seen any bite marks on the necks of these animals, the veterinarian said yes, that she had found one such bite on one animal, leading us to suppose that these bovines (all of them calves) had been attacked by a wild feline from the area (the possibility of a puma is not dismissed).

The puma hypothesis was also mentioned by the veterinarian, as well as the possibility that wild or feral canines had been responsible for the deaths, as these had been seen at the scene of the events in Mr. Lorenzutti’s field, some 15 kilometers distant from Mr. Estrada’s property, according to the police sergeant. Whether the animals displayed bites on their legs has yet to be established. This is where dogs tend to inflict injuries to bring the bovine down and then kill it on the ground. One of the characteristics we have mentioned in the foregoing paragraph is the bite on the upper part of the muzzle, as shown in the photo. This can indeed be done by canines and not by felines, who only eat the flesh. These feral dogs do not belong to any species in particular, but its possible that some larger ones survived, and when they attack, they do so at night and in packs.

In recent years, the progress of cultivation, particularly soy, due to the extraordinary prices on the international market, led to a clearing of the wilderness to have greater cultivation surfaces. This caused many native wild animals (birds, foxes, felines, hares, guazunchos, etc.) and dogs often abandoned by their owners in the wilderness, to migrate from one field to the next in search of food and shelter.

Conclusion:

By looking at these photos, there is no question that these 5 animal deaths were due to the attack of one or more predators migrating through the area.

The photos display the prints of the assailants. The prints suggest dogs, but there is one in particular that does not match these, and may perhaps be a feline looking for food, which occurs in the winter season when food is at its most scarce. The feline hypothesis would be ascribed to a puma or even a yaguareté.

The case is not closed, and we shall return in coming days to complement the visit to Mr. Lorenzutti’s field and determine and work on some points with the veterinarian with regard to the most affected areas on the bovines during the attacks, such as the necks and legs. The mystery remains, of course, as the five animals were attacked on the same side (left), 15 km distant from each other and with a week’s difference.

Argentina: Mysterious Mutilations Continue

Animal mutilations remind us of the strange events that rocked the province nearly ten years ago. Pratt, 51, owns a locker manufacturing facility in Alta Italia. He told the El Diario newspaper that “animals mutilated in a similar fashion” were found on his fields just like they did back then.

At the time, the phenomenon was ascribed to extraterrestrial beings and served to nurture peasant superstitions like the “Chupacabras”. SENASA advised at the time that mutilations in over a hundred of these cases could be blamed on the “red-muzzled mouse”. However, this species does not exist in the region and the mystery was never explained.

Pratt did not make his discovery widely known; some friends discouraged him because “they say that these are just fantasies that people make up.” However, the story became known and Alta Italia’s FM radio station broadcasted it this Wednesday morning.

German Schreiber, the officer-in-charge of the Sheriff’s office, traveled on Wednesday noon to the “El Iman” ranch, belonging to the Pratt family. It is located 13 kilometers from town, and he was accompanied by the town’s veterinarian.

“He was unable to determine the cause of death. It’s just like the cases that occurred at that time,” noted the policeman.

In an interview with El Diario, Pratt says that his foreman found two Aberdeen Angus calves, each weighing 350 kilograms, mutilated in a very strange way and without any traces of blood around them. All this in a 60 hectare spread.

“One was missing its scalp completely, all the way from the muzzle to the left. The bone has been peeled away at the carretilla, and the tongue is missing along with skin from its throat. There isn’t a single drop of blood anywhere; the incision of the skin is perfect, as if done with a razor,” he says, astonished.

The other animal is missing its upper teeth. It’s upper lip is burned to a dark blue, and half of its tongue is missing. No other signs are visible.”

The discovery stupefied the employee who came across the animals as he toured the property, and even Pratt himself. “The man has been working in the field for forty years and is used to seeing dead animals, yet he never saw anything like it. I’ve also seen many dead animals, but never under these circumstances,” he added.

“Carrion animals aren’t involved. No way. It isn’t a puma, or a wild boar, or even a carancho,” he noted.

Aside from the dead animals, two gates along the ranch fences were found with their chains broken, and the ox cart was disconnected.

Pratt did not inform the police, nor did he make the case known to any other agency, since he is well aware of the reply offered by SENASA at the time. “They determined that it was either a mouse or a carancho (vulture). I know that. But if you ask me, I’ll say no. This is something that I’ve never seen, something that really attracts attention.”

Along with his son Mauricio, 18, he took photos of the animals, which were left on the field in a state of decomposition.

Pratt is 51 and he is known in town as “an earnest man.” “I know the subject. I was raised in the countryside. I’m not crazy. I’m normal, like any other local,” he jokes, as he recreates the circumstances of time and space in which the surprising animal mutilation occurred. “The kid who surveys the fields left at one o’clock and returned the next day at noon. [The mutilation] must have occurred during the course of that afternoon, night and the morning of the next day. We found no signs or traces that suggested that the death had been brought about by a bullet or something. We don’t know what killed them.”

“The incision is perfect. Completely so. It’s very strange. That’s my definition. I can’t say what it is, but it’s no carrion eater, vulture or puma,” he adds.

The field where the animals appeared is not close to any rural road or route. “I know about livestock, and I’ve seen many dead animals, but never anything like this,” he insists. “I would like to have someone study this so that the matter can be cleared up someday. At the time they blamed carrion animals, and that’s why no progress was ever made. I find that odd.”

“Did you feel fear when you found this?” asks the El Diario interviewer.

“No, bewilderment. The foreman’s been a cattleman for over 40 years. All the more so, it isn’t normal. He’s a man used to seeing all sorts of animals.”

Yet he admits having allowed paranormal phenomena enter his mind: “Some talk about flying saucers because they must be mentioned, if only to say something. The same goes with witches. I say I don’t believe in them, but they exist, they really do. How can I not believe? But I think its something else. Otherwise those weird things would turn un. I’m not saying that a flying saucer is going to come to my house, but this is weird. It’s surprising. It’s not lightning from a storm or anything customary. This is surprising.”

The Parque Forestal Humanoid Photograph - Santiago, Chile

On May 10, 2004 Civil Engineer Germán Pereira was taking photographs of the Carabineros (state police) on horseback in the Parque Forestal of Santiago, Chile. One of the photos, after being downloaded from his digital camera, showed the image of a possible alien being. CIFAE Chile interviewed the witness and analyzed the photograph. Report from the witness, Civil Engineer Germán Pereira:

I'm from Concepción and have been working in Santiago for little over a a year. On May 10 this year I decided to take some photos at Parque Forestal, taking some 10 shots which I downloaded to my PC the following day .

I thought it would be interesting to photograph a group of Carabineros (state police) on horseback patrolling the sector. The photo was taken at 17:40 hrs approximately from the corner of JM de la Barra and Av. Cardenal José María Caro, in front of bellas Bellas Artes and looking east.

It was a cloudy day and the sun was hidden, for which reason my digital camera ( Kodak DX6490) adjusted to low speed (1/10 seg..

This is the reason why the photo shows motion (those knowledegable about photography will know the reason why)Furthermore, the Carabineros were som 20 meters distant, and I employed the camera's optical zoom (10x) which added to the blurred result.

The fact is that I am very impressed by this image. I attest to the fact that it is not a fraud nor anything similar. For this reason I have made it public and I contacted the staff of CIFAE Chile. I would like to know the true nature of the image that appears in it and if anyone has ever caught anything similar in a photo. Nothing more.

My enhancements of the humanoid image

Restoration of the Parque Forestal Image (CIFAE Report)

In regard to the analysis of the Parque Forestal photograph, CIFAE delivers this interesting report by our scientific director to the international UFO research community.

In this work we shall present a brief introduction to the restoration of images by means of deconvolution, which is the only correct technique for eliminating certain defects from images. We also attempt to restore the Parque Forestal image, although in this case it isn't possible to obtain very good results. We are not trying to debate what the subject of the photo is or is not, nor if it is of interest to ufology. The main subject under discussion here (restoration) should be of interest to any researcher who works with images.

An image distorted by being out of focus, astigmatism, "motion blur", atmospheric disturbances, etc. is mathematically represented as the convolution between the non-defective image and a PSF (point spread function). PSF is a function that can be interpreted as the distorted image of a white spot on a black background, and each image can have a different PSF depending on the camera and the conditions under which the image was acquired.

In order to restore the image and to eliminate these defects, one must perform the reverse operation, in other words, deconvolute the distorted image against the corresponding PSF. Deconvolution isn't hard to achieve, but the deconvolution algorithms tend to be sensible to the image's "noise" (fluctuations) and iterative methods can easily diverge. The worst problem arises when the PSF isn't known a priori, and in this case it is necessary to develop some method that can extract the PSF from the defective image, what is known as blind deconvolution. This problem can be hard to deal with, and may be considered as one of the great challenges of the field of image analysis.

It is also interesting to note the recent work of Alfred Carasso, who has achieved very impressive results, although the applicability of his methods is limited.

It is hard to find commercial software capable of performing blind deconvolutions. Some programs like AutoDeblur have been specifically developed for microscopy. The Unshake program is a general purpose one, but is based on a very simple method that doesn't always work well. Other software packages like Iris are only useful in astrophotography. The majority of the available programs require a priori knowledge of PSF, such as Unblur, which is general purpose. FocusFixer is only useful in dealing with out-of-focus image and Focus Magic corrects simple out of focus and motion blur.

For the time being we do not have access to a better commercial software package, therefore the Parque Forestal image was restored searching for PSF by simpler means. Knowing the basics of deconvolution, it is possible to know something about PSF by simple inspection of the photo. One can see that it appears in motion blur at angle of some 150 degrees. Using the Fix Motion Blur filter in Focus Magic at this angle, the distance could be established through trial and error, and turned out to be 11 pixels. In other words, the PSF that accoutns for the motion blur would be a straight line with a length of 11 pixels at an angle of 150 degrees. Upon eliminating the motion blur, it can be seen that the image is folded in the same direction (150 degrees) and at a distance of 17 pixels. In other words, the PSF that acknowledges this unfolding is two points at a distance of 17 pixels and at an angle of 150 degrees. The PSF was built using this inforamtion and the image was deconvoluted using Unblur. Focus Magic could not correct the unfolding. The result is shown in Figure 2, where it is noted that the image is partly restored, but with an increase in the amount of "noise". Contrast was not augmented artificially. The original photo has a lower contrast because the colors and shapes are mixed when an image is hazy, and upon restoring it, the colors and details of the real scene are also recovered.

According to expert James Caron, this image has several difficulties that do not allow for its full restoration:

-Due to poor lighting, a weak signal was obtained with excessive motion blur due to the long exposure time (0.1 seg).
-The object of interest is moving and has a different, more sever motion blur than the static objects in the scene.
-The image is compressed, which truncates the information necessary for its restoration.

In other words, the photo is compressed in the JPG format, which eliminates part of the information contained in the original image in order to reduce the storage size. The lack of lighting brings as a consequence an excessive amount of noise, especially in the restored image. This implies that there isn't a single PSF for the whole photo, which makes restoration difficult. On the other hand, any evidence of motion may be useful in intepreting the image. In our restoration, at least, some details and colors can be distinguished, and from the photo analysis point of view, it is the best that could be done in this case.

Regarding the possibility of fraud in this photo, it would be easy to dot. The figure could have been pasted on the photo and the resulting borders could ahve been erased through motion blur. On the other hand, the photo's EXIF could have been edited in order to simulate an original photo. But the fact that it is easy to forge does not constitute evidence of a hoax, although it could provide good grounds for ignoring this case or not taking it seriously. We have hitherto not received any valid arguments supporting the hoax hypothesis. Some have said that some lines or squares of well-defined borders can be noted, but this is only a defect of the JPG format.

In closing, something should be said about other image processing techniques. Some effects that highlight the image's details are very common, such as contrast and saturation, sharpening, unsharp mask, border detection, emboss, solarizing, etc. But it is obvious that none of these filters would be capable of restoring an image such as the one in Figure 1. many of these filters are deceptive because they alter the image, giving the false impression of having improved it, but they are at times only useful for aesthetic purposes. It is advisable not to employ a filter if the basics of its operation are unknown.

As an example of a poor job, we mention the one created with a fantasy filter at the request of the IIEE in Figure 3 A, which could be interpreted as a dog. The idea is not to argue if the subject is a dog or not; all that is shown here is that this particular work is poorly executed. The diagonal lines that betray the presence of motion blur are highly visible, and one of the legs is unfolded in the same way as in the original photo. Overall, this image has the same geometry as the original, but different coloring. In other words, there is no evidence of restoration in this retouching. The way in which the colors have been altered is also noticeable.

The CIFAE Report

Among some of the conclusions that can be drawn from the CIFAE report, we can say that the procedures applied up to now in analyzing the image of Parque Forestal, and in which some have thought to see a dog, are mistaken. At least in the positions know.

In other words, if this image in fact corresponds to a canine, the superficial analyses performed until now have NOT proved it.

CIFAE shall continue to analyzing the image and we shall continue to keep our readers abreast of further developments.

Interview with Germán Pereira, the photographer of the alien photo in Parque Forestal, Santiago, Chile

**Germán Pereira: "One can see something walking and has arms and a head, but I don't know what it is."**

"I have no opinion on the nature of what came out on the photo, or else I'll just keep it to myself," said Germán Pereira.

The engineer is startled by the stir caused by his snapshot and says that the has received phone calls from Spain, Colombia and Argentina.

Pereira, a civil engineer, says that he had to turn off his cell phone in order to concentrate on work, since the instrument did not stop ringing after it was learned that he was the author of a the surprising photo of an alleged alien in Parque Forestal.

He's only been a week at his new job and his co-workers don't know that he has been on television and in newspapers, and has recieved calls from Colombia, Argentina and Spain, whose news media want to know more about his story.

"I have no knowledge of this, but from what Erick Martinez (of the Corporacion de Investigacion de Fenomenos Aereos--CIFAE) tells me, it seems that it is one of the clearest photos ever taken. It is surely for this reason that it has had such an impact," he speculated.

Pereira, 33, is a graduate of the University of Concepción and came to Santiago a little over a year ago. He is an amateur photographer and owns a Kodak DX6490 digital camera. On Monday, May 10 he had the afternoon off, so he got on his bicycle with the camera and went off to Parque Forestal.

He took ten photos and was "rewarded" with the image of a tiny grey being walking between two Carabineros (state police) on horseback. This is the image that has gone around the world thanks to websites on paranormal phenomena.

-- What was it about that shot that drew your attention?

--Look, first I took a photo of the Carabinero patrol that was coming over the nearby bridge. Then, since I was riding my bike, I headed for the northern sector. I took another photo of them from that point, and that's the one on the Internet.

--Did you see the alien in the [digital camera's] screen?

--No, I saw it the next day, when I downloaded the photo.

--And what did you think?

--I was impressed, that's all. I saw it with a colleague and we found it odd. I thought that it was the same impression everyone else who saw the photo must have had. It's rather shocking. The fact of the matter is that I didn't see it when I took the picture.

--Do you recall seeing anything odd at the time?

No, nothing at all. And I also asked myself that when I checked the photo, I tried to recall what was there. It would have been ideal to have seen it when the photo was taken, by I saw nothing strange. I was interested in taking a photo of the mounted patrol.

--If it was an alien it should have come out in the other photos you took that day.

--Yes, it could have come out, but it appears in that one only. Now, the other (photos) are from other areas.

--Had you ever had any similar experience?

--In fact I'd never had any experience of this type, nor was I very involved in UFO or alien matters. I don't know it that's the true nature of the matter, and that's why I stepped back from it and turned it over to people who deal with the subject. All I know is that it isn't a photographic error. I also know that it isn't a hoax, because I'm not behind it. The photo is still there, still inside the camera. I haven't wanted to erase it.

-- And why's that?

--I want the Kodak people to see it. In fact, I have to phone them.

--How did your photo reach the Internet?

--What happened is that on Tuesday, when I downloaded it to my computer, I mailed it to a friend in Concepción. He sent it to the people of CIFAE and to another two parties. That very same day Erick and I met up, because they were the first to believe in the photo.

--And what's your opinion of all this?

--I have no opinionon the nature of what came out on the photo, or else I'll just keep it to myself. In any event, one can see something that appears to walk, has a arms and a head, but I don't really know what it is."

--Are you into UFOs? Have you had "close encounters"?

--No, no sightings. I don't lose any sleep over the subject, but I find it interesting. And with this stuff the same, if not more so.

--Have your co-workers bothered you?

--No. I think that maybe now the will. The day I took the photo I was with another company. I've only been here a week. They don't even know me.

9 Possible Explanations For Alleged Alien In Chilean Photo

SANTIAGO - The photo taken by German Pereira, showing a strange "character" walking across Parque Forestal, has gone all around the world, appearing in a variety of internet sites as well as news dailies and television. Despite the fact that the digital image has been studied in detail, no one knows what the curious phenomenon might be. However, the following theories have been put forth:

I. THE ALIEN

One of the better-known stories is the presence of an alien in the photo taken at Parque Forestal. The strange character that appears near the mounted policemen's horses is very similar to the "Greys", whether on account of its macrocephaly or its elongated arms. What is odd is the creature's size, since tests to the digital image show that its height would not exceed 80 centimeters. Some ufologists state that there is no precedent for such small extraterrestrials, therefore this possibility has been discarded. However, UFO research has always been based on eyewitness testimony and photo evidence, therefore a new concept of space beings, smaller in size than those hitherto known, would be a new line of research.

II. THE IMP OR GNOME

Without a doubt one of the most accepted theories by the public regarding the strange creature. Certainly the characteristics that can be made out on this entity are similar to the ones described by those who have seen imps, whether on acount of its size or its greenish hue. Furthermore, these mythical creatures are believed to inhabit places filled with trees and flowers, making it not at all strange that Parque Forestal should form part of their habitat. Experts in manifestations by these entities reinforce the theory that imps can only be seen by certain people, since they belong to another dimension, and that a digital photograph could be a good option for seeing them.

III. A GHOST.

Cyberspace is filled with countless photos showing specters or ghosts in poses similar to that of the Parque Forestal creature. Among thousands of photos, a good number of them are fakes, but an equally significant amount has not been dismissed as hoaxes. Therefore, within the possibilities of this image, the possibility of a ghost could easily coincide with many others of its type.

IV. A TREE BRANCH.

The trails of Parque Forestal are covered with many leaves and branches that constantly fall from the trees, especially during the fall. For this reason, one of the theories put forth explains that one such branch could have created the capricious image of a walking alien. The blurriness of the image could lend credibility to this explanation.

V. A CHILD

Another theory posited states that a small child was walking between the two Carabineros horsemen. This is not unlikely, since such things happen constantly in that area of the park. But upon studying the image and being's size, the child could not have been more than a year and half old. As the image shows, the creature walks erect and its body does not present the characteristics of a child of that age. Furthermore, there are no signs of clothing covering the body of the alleged child, and the neck is absent from beings quasi-deformed head. However, the sweep of the image deforms the possibility of evaluating details such as clothing or other traits that could make this the solution.

VI. A MONKEY

What would an ape be doing in the middle of Parque Central? Well, its one of many interpretations of this image. The characteristics of the "creature" could be projected on a small ape who had escaped at that time from the zoo or from a private home. What is odd is the color of the alleged ape, aside from the calm way it crosses between two animals of far larger size than its own.

VII. LIGHTS AND SHADOWS

For those knowledgeable in the subject, it is easy to capture a significant light and shadow play which can mislead us easily. Upon observing this photo, we can see that there are several patches of light between the leaves. These give the sensation of possessing a color that is similar to that of the strange being. We also see another light spot over the entity's body, suggesting an object on its back, which could be interpreted as a rucksack, but is only light play after initial analysis. Under this premise, we cannot dismiss the possibility that the phenomenon photographed by German Pereira is only the product of light and shadow play.

VII. THE HOAX

Under the magnifying glasses of several experts, the image from Forestal is no more than an absurd hoax to promote the subject of UFOs and aliens. However, we lack any proof that completely rejects the veracity of the alleged alien photo. The following are some possible means of hoaxing the image

Superimposed Images

One of the most common tricks when creating photos of this sort is the superimposition of images, whether through a computer or employing sophisticated design programs, which aid us in constructing photos with external elements. This can be done by taking a photo obtained by a conventional original (a traditional photo with a chemically-processed negative) which has been scanned and then digitized. Then, an external element is attached (as strange figure or other object. After printing it on a laser printer on high-quality paper, it can be photographed using a digital camera, obtaining the result we have come to know.

El Barrido

One of the photos limitations is the sweep generated by the digital camera, which blurs the image, making it impossible to make a firm conclusion. But the most curious detail is that these "sweeps" are hard to do with a digital camera. Digital cameras generally operate as sensitivities of 100, 200 and 400 ISO (standardized sensitivity units between ASA and DIN, which are the U.S. and German units, respectively). This means that the exposure speeds for an outdoor shot on a clear day (such as in this photo) would never be lower than 1/100th of a second. A sweep of such a magnitude could never be obtained at such a speed. The photo would be underexposed (in its original) for which reason the contrast (luminance) or colors (chrominance) cannot be fully seen, which are needed to distinguish capacity and depth in each cell.

IX. A PRANK

Another possibility is that it was all concocted at the site of the events, creating the impression of a being calmly walking among two mounted horses. When looking closely at the image, we can see that the at the second post to the left of the photo, there is a diagonal element supported toward the ground. This could be a stick, but its thickness could readily represent one of the legs of a tripod supporting the strange character.

Police bizarre legal battle to keep Jack the Ripper files secret so Victorian sources keep their 'confidentiality'

The Met Police is fighting a legal battle to keep files detailing the investigation into the notorious Jack the Ripper case secret - to maintain confidentiality for Victorian 'supergrasses'.

The documents are said to include four new suspects for the serial killings which terrorised Whitechapel in 1888 and have become one of the world's most infamous unsolved cases.

The historic ledgers have 36,000 entries detailing police interaction with informants between 1888 to 1912.

However, Scotland Yard reportedly believes disclosing the names could hinder recruiting and gathering information from modern informants, affecting terrorism investigations - and even lead to the Victorians' relatives being attacked.

Author and former police officer, Trevor Marriott, has tried for three years to see uncensored versions of the documents.

He has previously applied under the Freedom of Information Act and, when that was refused, he appealed to the Information Commissioner, which also rejected his attempt.

He has now appealed to the Information Tribunal, which is expected to release its decision later this year.

Mr Marriott, who has written two previous books on the case, told the Sunday Mirror: 'These files should be made public at once. They are some of the most interesting records on the case I've come across.

'Some of the informants died more than 100 years ago, so to censor the documents is absurd.'

He told the Sunday Telegraph he thought it could be the 'very last chance' to solve the case, as the files contained at least four new suspects and other evidence.

The three day hearing - part of a legal battle which has so far cost the taxpayer thousands of pounds - was last week told by a detective inspector, known as D, that disclosing the files could deter informants from helping the police.

Speaking from behind a screen, the Sunday Telegraph reported that the officer - who works in intelligence gathering - said: 'Confidence in the system is maintaining their safety, regardless of age.'

The newspaper also said that Det Supt Julian McKinney said that any release would make officers less able to prevent terrorist attacks and organised crime: 'Regardless of the time, regardless of whether they are dead, they should never be disclosed.

'They come to us only when they have the confidence in our system that their identity will not be disclosed.'

Although there were 11 murders in total, the killings of prostitutes Mary Ann Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Catherine Eddowes and Mary Jane Kelly are considered to be the five key cases as they all occurred in the same small London area of Whitechapel.

All of their throats were cut and several of their internal organs were removed including the uterus and heart.

The Met Police's four suspects for the killings include Aaron Kosminski, Montague John Druitt, Michael Ostrog and Dr Francis J.Tumblety.

The pseudonym Jack the Ripper came from a letter posted to a London news agency at the time of the murders, supposedly from the killer himself but it was later dismissed as a hoax. dailymail

Man stranded for more than two months chronicles days leading up to death

The body of a man found by forest service workers Thursday on a back road near Marion Forks is that of 68-yea-old Jerry William McDonald, the Linn County Sheriff's Office announced Friday.

An autopsy showed that McDonald's death was consistent with starvation and/or hypothermia.

McDonald was identified using fingerprints.

"It appears he was camping there to start with," said Sheriff Tim Mueller. McDonald was in a sleeping bag in the bed of a pickup. He had apparently become stuck in the snow in February on Forest Service Road 517, about three miles from Highway 22 and about four miles from Marion Forks.

McDonald scribbled short entries on a homemade calendar, noting the weather and the number of days he'd been there. He appears to have arrived on Feb. 7, and notes getting snowed in on Feb. 14.

He also wrote reminders to himself, such as "motor vehicle registration expires" on April 12 and "can camp at Powers for 20 d." on April 18.

The road out would have been impassable in snowy conditions, the sheriff said, and there was no sign McDonald tried to walk out.

His 1997 GMC pickup with canopy was driveable in Thursday's spring conditions, Mueller said. It had about a quarter of a tank of gas and tire chains on all four tires.

McDonald had apparently tried to create traction under the pickup with rocks. He also had a jack and apparently tried to use it.

The vehicle was registered to an address in Unity. Detectives said McDonald was transient.

According to the sheriff, he was prepared for the conditions. He was dressed appropriately and had extra fuel for the pickup. There was evidence he had built a small fire and was collecting water in buckets.

However, there was no food, GPS, cell phone or compass recovered at the scene.

More than $5,000 in cash was found in the pickup.

An entry on McDonald's calendar for March 2 reads "Trapped, snowed in on 14th."

He may have run out of food on March 16, where it reads "No Fo1" and is labeled day 38. The next day says "No Fo2," followed by "No F3" the day after that.

The last entry is on April 15. He wrote "rain" and labeled it 68.

Detectives say McDonald was estranged from his family. He has a son living in West Linn. The son told detectives he hadn't talked to his father in 30 years.

Nobody had reported him missing.

Argentina: "Synchronized UFOs" Over The Samborombón River

An amateur fisherman witnessed the maneuvers of three unidentified objects over the banks of the Samborombón River near the town of Ferrari, Buenos Aires. Researchers consider this event important due to the synchronization of the UFOs movements, which according to the protagonist of the extraordinary adventure, even acted as if aware of his lonely presence in the darkness of the early morning hours. The episode, investigated by the Fundación Argentina de Ovnilogia (FAO) took place on April 3, 2010 when Sergio Asselborn, a veterinarian from the city of Quilmes, was engaged in one of his hobbies – fishing – in a spot chosen for many years: the Samborombón River, at a spot located over an iron bridge some 30 km from National Highway 2. It was a two o’clock in the morning when Asselborn, as the veterinarian told FAO researchers, underwent a life-changing experience: a buzzing sound similar to that of a beehive prompted him to look up, causing him to see something he had never seen in many years of fishing trips to the site. A plate-shaped UFO was in the sky, surrounded by small orange and red lights that outlined its contour. Argentina: UFOs over Santiago – Surprising Close Encounter Narratives

Questions about the existence of beings from other planets, periodically visiting our world, are nothing new. Enigmas in Empty Places: Haunted Deserts

One does not immediately associate the concept of deserts with Brazil - our mental images of the South American giant immediately take us to the jungle greenery of the Amazon or to the bright pleasures of Rio de Janeiro. However, the South American superpower extensive coastal deserts—complete with sand dunes—in the northern region of Maranhao, once known to be the wealthiest part of this Portuguese possession (so wealthy, in fact, that a Portuguese monarch was willing to abdicate his crown as long he was able to keep control over Maranhao). Located between the Mangueira and Parnaíba deserts, the vast sand dunes are contained within the Lencois Maranhenses National Park and aerial photography shows the sand encroaching on the surrounding vegetation, like a stain of white ink on a green tablecloth. This is not surprising, as the Maranhao dunes stand a staggering thirty meters talls and are a source of humidity that attracts all manner of wildlife to it.

The sand dunes of Maranhao are also the home of highly unusual paranormal phenomena. In 1997, researchers Pablo Villarubia and Carlos Alberto Martins crossed the desert to visit remote communities and interview locals about their brushes with the unknown. The people who somehow wrest a living out of this harsh land speak freely of a recurrent luminous phenomenon known as the caburé or even more picturesquely as “the phantom Jeep”. Unlike tales involving phantom cars like the terrifying Haitian zobop, the ghost Jeep of the Maranhao dunes is seen where no vehicles usually drive; some claim having been blinded by the intense blueness of its headlights, which can illuminate the surroundings like daylight. One man interviewed by Villarubia and Martins was out deer-hunting when the ethereal vehicle made a beeline toward him, scaring him out of his wits and making him beleive that he was about to be run over in the wilderness. Unable to move, he saw the phantom Jeep vanish into thin air before it struck him. The "phantom Jeep" may also have a Mexican cousin: the carro de Banda reported in Durango's Zone of Silence since the 1920s.

However, the caburé isn’t the only light in the Maranhao. Carlos Araújo, born and raised in the area, told researchers that he was hunting deer among the scrub when he came across a cigar-shaped light suspended in the air, looking like “the burning tip of a cigarette” and less than a hundred meters from where he stood in the darnkess. Calling out to the object, thinking it might belong to a fellow hunter, the cigar shaped light did something completely unexpected: it changed shape, elongating up, down and sideways into the shape of a cross. Believing that it was a sign of God, Araújo dropped to his knees in fervent prayer as the cross turned to the same blue color associated with the phantom Jeep’s headlights.

Yet these experiences are hardly new. As far back as the 1930’s, ethnographers were collecting stories in the area about strange goings-on that were quickly filed under “folklore”. Author José Carvalho reported that fishermen along the Mangueiras River were used to seeing objects best described as brightly lit phantom boats that caused riverboat captains to panic and veer off course before a collision could occur.

But lights aside, the area contains even more compelling mysteries, such as the abandoned city of Tutóia, believed by 19th century archeologist Ludwig Schwennhagen to be a Phoenician fortified trading post in the manner of similar trading posts found along the Red Sea during the Hellenistic Age. It was believed that further proof of the Phoenician presence in northwestern Brazil could perhaps be found not in this desert-girt city but in the swamps and bogs along the shores of the Pinaré River.

Salt Deserts of the South

In February 2001, residents of the northern Chilean town of Calama—located in the vicinity of the country’s northern salt deserts—claimed having seen a “caravan of UFOs” in the Salar de Atacama, one of the driest spots on Earth. A strange silvery sphere had been causing a great deal of consternation among locals, but it wasn’t until February 24 at 8:30 pm that Adolfo Trigo, a young resident of the outlying village of San Rafael, claimed having seen a UFO taking off from one of the village’s quarters. The object, he would later tell the Diario de Calama newspaper, was a “fish-tailed cylinder with a phosphorescent green front, an electric blue middle and a violet-hued tail.”

Trigo was spellbound as the multicolored object made a full turn in the air before rising into the night sky at full speed. But what makes Trigo’s account unique is that he did not see the object lose itself among the stars, as is often described in UFO sightings, but rather “disappear into a doorway in the sky.”

Others would become witnesses to this latest desert mystery. Weeks later, Gustavo Glade would become a witness to UFO while traveling by truck along Cuesta El Diablo on the southernmost reaches of the Atacama Desert. The driver, accompanied by five other passengers, was able to see a sequence of bright rectangular lights that appeared to be flying in tandem. It looked, in his own words, “like seeing a train riding through space”, a description corroborated by the others aboard his vehicle. However, the same peculiarity as in the Trigo sighting was noticed: the heavenly convoy did not fly away or shoot up into space—it seemed to enter into a cloud or “dimensional doorway” through which it vanished completely. Glade’s sighting lasted a total of eighteen to twenty seconds and the objects involved were no mroe than a dozen, flying in an upward direction, which discarded the suggested possibility that the driver and his passengers had seen a meteor.

The UFO phenomenon’s interest in Chile is mirrored by the U.S. military’s interest in both the country and the phenomenon. According to journalist Cristián Riffo (www.ovnivision.cl), a Col. Hubert Brandon prepared a dossier on the anomalous activity in this country in 1965. This Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) dossier documents UFO sightings and encounters reported by trained professionals, including the Septemebr 1965 encounter between a LAN Chile airliner piloted by Marcelo Cisternas over the city of Arica, in which a zig-zagging object buzzed the aircraft for a number of minutes.

Months before the Trigo and Glade sightings, researcher Jaime Ferrer of the Calama UFO Center managed to collect a compelling account from the desert community of Chiu-Chiu which took place in October 2000. A man named Gonzalo, owner of a hard candy factory in the area and who distributed his product personally to the local towns, told Ferrer the following story: he had been driving some forty kilometers along the road when he saw a bright light the size of the full moon which appeared to be coming in for a landing. However, the bright object was actually suspended in mid-air. Gonzalo pulled his delivery van over , turned off the headlights and lowered the driver side window for a better look. To his astonishment, the object “exploded” and vanished, scattering three lights—red, yellow and blue-- in separate directions. What truly astonished him, he told Ferrer, was that no sooner had the lights scattered, he could hear a helicopter taking off in the darkness, although he couldn’t see it. The helo kicked up a dust storm and Gonzalo noticed “ a powerful ultraviolet light” aimed at the ground. Three wheeled vehicles, which he took to be Jeeps or 4x4s followed the helicopter’s beam and lost themselves in the desert – proof that the Chilean military is as interested in UFOs as it ever was, despite strenuous protestations that it keeps no files on the phenomenon?

Why Chile? Why the Atacama Desert with its thousand year-old mummies and vestiges of the earliest civilizations in South America? Archaeologist Juan Schobinger has written in his Prehistory in the Americas (NY: M.E. Sharpe, 2000) that Chile faces one of the richest seas in the world and is backed by one of its most forbidding deserts. The dryness of the salt desert, where rainfall is measured in inches per century, made it ideal for preserving cultural artifacts such as baskets, textiles and even food.

It also preserved something darker—the rituals of forgotten shamans who would bury sacrifices deep in the desert for the “gods” to feast upon. The sacrifices would be held at night and the victim, usually a llama or a dog, left out. At daybreak, the ancient medicine men would return to the site to insure that the gods—the meandering lights of the desert—had accepted the offering. The carcass would be utterly exsanguinated and a puncture mark could usually be found somewhere on the body, which was then transported back to the primitve settlement to be consumed by the community. Subsequently, evidence of this communion between man and his deities was buried under a cairn known as an apachetca, a tangible link of the trade betwen ancient man and supernatural forces. It is easy to dismiss this as the savagery of ancient man until we remember that the books of the Pentateuch mentioned that the blood of the sacrifice belonged to the godhead. Contemporary thinkers of the paranormal like Salvador Freixedo have written at length about this curious aspect of the human worship (Defendámonos de los dioses, Spain: Quintá, 1985).

Death Lurks in the Sand

Spanish author Miguel Seguí, writing in Año Cero magazine, mentions a conversation a conversation he held with Tunisian camel driver Mohamed Charaa regarding the perils of the northern reaches of the Sahara desert. In the vicinity of the town of Gafsa, said Charaa, the truly unlucky ran the risk of coming across monstrously large snakes known as taguerga which measure up to 4 meters in length and whose poison is lethal. In the late 1950s, desert nomads spoke of giant snakes that devoured their goats and and sheep; when one specimen decided to help itself to a young camel at a desert campsite, the nomads decided that no matter how much they loathed the idea of doing so, it was necessary to appeal to the colonial authorities for help.

It was thus, according to Seguí, that a French army detachment was sent to investigate from the vicinty of Beni Ounif. It wasn’t long before these romanticized desert warriors came across the largest snake they had ever seen—so large that their Enfield rifles were unable to fell it. The soldiers had to resort to a heavy machine gun to slay the beast, which measured a nightmarish 20 meters long—very nearly 90 feet.

Although the serpent’s skin was preserved for a while, the political turmoil of the times and the withdrawal of French forces from the area caused all traces of the spectacular find to be lost.

Seguí was able to determine, however, that a year earlier, a native auxiliary had been attacked by a giant snake measuring anywhere between fourteen and fifteen feet. The skin of this desert beast had indeed been preserved and seen by many, but was ultimately sold for forty-five thousand Francs to a private collector. The notable characteristic of this monster snake is that it appears to be able to “jump up” to bite a human or camel in the head, and has a singular characteristic: what appears to be a crest of long hairs on its head, which also have horns.

Years would go by before another case was reported. It wasn’t until 1967, during the construction of a massive dam in southern Morocco, that bulldozer operator Hamza Rahmani saw a seven long serpent engaging in a singular activity—eating its way through the construction site’s entire supply of engine grease. Using his bulldozer’s blade, Rahmani was able to kill the creature, which measured a little over nine meters long and had a “mane’ of hair running along its head. According to Seguí, the construction project was bedeviled by the creatures, with a ten meter long one—complete with twisted horns—being seen the following year and twelve to fifteen meter one reported two years later. While even the most open-minded may scoff at these measurments and call them overblown, the author reminds us that eighteen-meter long snakes were common during the Pleistocene in South America.

But stranger things than giant snakes can be found in the world’s deserts. Ing. Marco Reynoso of Mexico’s defunct Fundación Cosmos A.C. describes a case involving a group of teenagers during the months of December '89/January '90 as they traveled to visit a series of caves located in Cerro Pajarito, in the Mexican state of Chihuahua on the road leading to the Paquimé archaeological site. According to Alvaro Villareal, one of the witnesses, they found two dead, 3-point deer and one doe on their path. The animal’s carcasses were not rigid and the eyes had been eaten by ants. Three perforations, spaced at 3 cm., were on their necks forming a triangle. Footprints similar to those of a puma were seeing in the area.

When the group entered into one of the caves, they heard squealing sounds and smelled an odor of burned wood; standing on an outcropping 15 meters away was an entity resembling the one described as the "Chupacabras", which advanced toward them. Seized by panic, one of the would-be speleologists drew his pistol and fired an entire clip at the creature, which was impervious to the hail of bullets. The group ran out of the cave, uncertain if the creature was dead or not. They also claim having encountered a thin, metallic green entity standing some 80 cm., which they took to be an "extraterrestrial". Drawings were subsequently made of both creatures. It is worth noting that the deserts of Northern Mexico have also been the locale for many encounters and sighings of winged creatures best described as “gargoyles” or even “Birdmen” (see “Return of the Birdmen” by Scott Corrales, FATE October 1998).

Conclusion

The desert is a place of great beauty, but also of danger. It is the place where animals and insects inimical to human life dwell and also the place seekers go to find hidden wisdom and revelations. Traditionally the “deserted places” were shunned by the ancients, who believed that the gods of the ruined cities in the desert reverted into angry demons, having no one to worship them. Tanith Lee, one of Great Britain finest authors of sword and sorcery, writes a compelling account of a band of desert travelers who entertain a stranger by their campfire—who should it turn out to be but the demon king, come to the surface to listen to the chorused voices of his “children”, the desert predators. H.P. Lovecraft, whose visions disturb our sleep to this very day, had the “Mad Arab” Abd Alhazred title the fearsome Necronomicon “Al Azif” – supposedly the sound made by nocturnal desert insects who are in fact, evil spirits.

But so much for the worlds created by our gifted fantasists. What wonders—and horrors—do the world’s deserts hold for us?

The NOTIVER newspaper reported on the incidents that took place at a ranch in the community of Las Compras, two kilometers distant from the municipal seat, according to Oscar Leonel Rojas, first police commissioner:

The sheep were kept in a pen within the ranch owned by Justino Andrés Bretón, and died when blood was sucked out of their bodies.

Bretón reported that he made the discovery on Tuesday morning. He found the seventeen lifeless sheep scattered throughout the ranch as he was about to feed them.

“We heard nothing in the early morning hours. There was no noise or anything like it. The animals presented bite marks in various parts of their bodies, mainly the neck. Some of them had tears in their skin,” he explained. His neighbors say its the Chupacabras, because the attack on the sheep shares the same characteristics that were in evidence during the animal slayings years ago throughout the municipality and the region.

Alarmed by the bizarre occurrence, local residents declared themselves in a state of alert, as they did not know the type of animal or beast that they are dealing with, and have therefore organized themselves into brigades to look after their animals. “What is odd is that there are no traces suggesting that the animal went as far as where the sheep were kept. Residents have made their fear of the alleged Chupacabras’s presence well known and have taken measures to prevent further attacks,” he remarked.

For the moment, the first commander stated that monitoring operations had been stepped up in the region to find the animal that killed seventeen sheep in an unusual manner in a single morning.”

This is the third report concerning mysterious deaths in Mexico in 2011. The first was in Chiapas and the second in Chihuahua.

Mexico: More “UFOs” Seen over León

Some people in Parque Metropolitano saw lights in the sky that they ascribed to UFOs.

Residents of the city of Leon claimed seeing such objects in the Downtown area; even one person managed to record the alleged sighting.

Juan Antonio Lopez professed himself as completely skeptical, but changed his opinion on Friday when he saw around 50 luminous objects in the sky moving in an orderly fashion toward the Parque Metropolitano before vanishing from slight.

“In fact, many of us even referred to these lights as brujas (witches) in the sky, but after what I’ve seen, now I believe in them (UFOs).”

María Sandoval says that she also saw the lights in the sky last Friday night. “I was able to see them in the vicinity of El Rosario. They’re neither balloons nor airplanes, because they move in formation, and a balloon wouldn’t fly so high or move [in such a way].”

A resident of Gran Jardín says that around 0200 yesterday she saw five lights flying in formation at high speed. She made it clear that these could not be airplanes due to their high rate of speed. Another resident of León said that three red spheres forming a triangle have been visible since January from the parking lot at Plaza Galerías.

Videos have been uploaded to the Internet. For over a month, sightings of alleged unidentified flying objects over León have been posted to YouTube. The videos have over a thousand hits and according to the description offered, were seen over Ibarrilla and the El Coecillo district.

Images show some lights that remain static before moving swiftly, and later disapperaing. Others show circles of light in the sky before nightfall. A three-part video was taken in mid-February, looking toward Cerro Gordo, and according to the person who took it, a “UFO Flotilla” is in evidence.

Another video is dated 15 February and was taken around 0750 hours near Ley de Torres Landa. “We thought it was a balloon, but when it got closer we saw its shape,” says the author of the video posted to the website.

Mexico: Chupacabras Strikes in Tapachula (Chiapas)

* Animals were found near the Pemex facilities.
* Carcasses displayed tremendous bite marks; do not correspond to any known species.

The carcasses were found in the vicinity of the train station and the Pemex facilities, scattered on the ground and betraying impressive puncture marks that do not correspond to any animal endemic to the region or passing through, according to Amalia García.

The four sheep had their blood extracted -- apparently -- through a hole in their throats. According to local residents, this may constitute the reappearance of the Chupacabras.

At noon on Monday, February 21, phone calls from citizens alerted the authorities to the presence of the lifeless animals.

Authorities mentioned that none of the sheep had any blood left in their bodies, as it had been removed.

The discovery of the lifeless, exsanguinated sheep with holes in their throats caused curiosity-seekers to reach the conclusion that the legend of the Chupacabras should be taken up seriously once more. Twelve years have gone by without any reports on this phantasm, who was mentioned for the first time on May 1, 1999. - Mexico: Chupacabras Strikes in Tapachula (Chiapas)

Mexico: Strange Animal Kills and Exsanguinates Prey

** Three attacks in one week in Chihuahua, Mexico**

The first incident was recorded in the early hours of 16 February with 12 dead sheep and others with severe wounds.

The affected party stated that his animals were in a pen with a two meter tall fence, which natural predators are unable to penetrate. Even so, the strange animal entered and attacked the sheep without eating them, relieving them of their blood and leaving marks suggesting a jaw that can open up to 20 centimeters. There were also scratches and puncture marks from long fangs in evidence. Lambs had their heads crushed.

The second attack occurred during the first hours of Monday, 21 February on the property of Mr. Roberto Villalobos, with 20 dead sheep.

The third attack took place again on Mr. Villalobos’s property.

“The custodian saw what was happening and unleashed a Great Dane to fight the animal, which he was able to see in the shadows. But the dog fled after receiving a push from the assailant,” said a startled Roberto Villalobos.

Local residents are fearful of going out in the evening, saying that for a week now they have been victimized by attacks from an unknown animal whose prints they are unable to recognize.

The place where the events occurred is Estación de Terrazas, a rural areal located 40 km from Chihuahua’s state capital.

DATES OF THE ATTACKS:

Wednesday, 16 February – 12 dead sheep, 10 wounded
Monday, 21 February – 20 dead sheep, 25 injured
Friday, 25 February – 15 dead sheep
