Maine Big Cat Mystery

LEWISTON, Maine - June 29, 2007 - A photo making e-mail rounds Thursday that shows what looks like a big, rare cat in a Sidney backyard is real, according to the Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife spokesman.

Whether that's actually a mountain lion leaning on a rock wall is up in the air. The cat's tail, the easiest way to tell a bobcat from a mountain lion, is hidden by a tree.

"That's why we're sending someone out there," said Mark Latti. "Maine doesn't have a wild population of mountain lions."

The picture came in to IFW on Thursday. He said the homeowner wants to be anonymous. A biologist will go out soon to look for other evidence, like tracks, and measure the size of the rocks where the cat stood to get a sense of scale.

Maine hasn't had wild mountain lions since the late 1800s, Latti said. Vermont and New Hampshire don't have them either.

"We do receive a handful of sightings a year," he added. The last significant one was about six years ago in Monmouth. Plaster casts were made of what turned out to be mountain lion tracks, "but we never saw it again."

In the mid-1990s, mountain lion hair was found in Cape Elizabeth

The animals live mostly out West and sometimes make headlines with vicious attacks. According to SanDiegoZoo.org, the male mountain lion can get up to six feet long and 227 pounds.

Central Maine Medical Center spokesman Randy Dustin had a friend send him the photo with a note that read, "This thing ran in front of me the other night in Sidney." It was on the Turnpike and the friend thought he'd been seeing things.

"I think it could be real," he said. "It's exciting."

UFO Sighting Over Norwich

NORWICH, UK - June 27, 2007 - It could be proof there really are little green men out there - or it could just be a close encounter with something far less alien.

A couple spotted five round orange objects moving silently across the skies over the city on Saturday night in one of the first UFO sightings this year.

Liam King, who was visiting Norwich from Colchester with his girlfriend, spotted the glowing orbs as he was walking along St Giles' Street, Upper St Giles' Street and Earlham Road at 10.35pm.

Mr King and his girlfriend were walking back to their hotel on Earlham Road when they saw the mystery objects.

He said: “When we first saw the lights we were walking west up St Giles Street where it was reasonably quiet - and quiet enough to hear that the objects were not emitting any sound.

“Just as we lost the first two behind the roofs of the buildings on Upper St Giles Street we saw a third travelling in the same direction, then a fourth and a fifth.

“We were able to view the fifth light more clearly and were able to see that the light was flying between us and the nearest cloud.”

Another man, who also saw the UFOs but did not want to be named, said: “It was amazing - there were six fireballs in the sky, one was much brighter than the others. I took pictures on my camera but they've come out as white fuzzy blobs. When you zoom in it looks like a spiral in spirals. I watched and they all started disappearing, then, this sounds crazy, but one shot into the other one at a speed far faster than any plane could go. And then they shot into space. I feel silly saying it - but what I saw was not normal.”

The Norfolk UFO Society confirmed Mr King's description is a very common sighting of an unidentified object.

John Sayer, 54, from the organisation said: “Orange is quite a common description and so are balls of light.

“It seems the Norwich area is a hot spot for UFO activity - a lot aren't reported, but the city has one of the highest number of sightings.”

Mr Sayer of Stratton Strawless had around six reports of sightings in the city during the autumn months last year.

Spotters of unidentified flying objects over Hellesdon saw a black triangular craft above Low Road on August 23.

Last week, a pilot and passengers crossing the Channel Islands spotted two large yellow cigar-like objects in the sky.

The objects were thought to be a mile long and the sightings have sparked interest in the eternal question of whether UFOs exist.

Those who believe they have seen an unidentified flying object can report it to the Norfolk UFO Society, but the Ministry of Defence also keeps recordings from across the country.

The MOD reports at the end of 2006 state Norfolk had a similar sighting in East Dereham on May 20 last year where “Orange lights were seen. They appeared to be in formation and travelling slowly.”

BFRO Will Hunt for Evidence of 'Bigfoot' in Michigan

MANISTIQUE, Mich. (June 27) - Researchers will visit the Upper Peninsula in Michigan next month to search for evidence of the legendary creature known as "Bigfoot" or "Sasquatch."

The expedition will focus on eastern Marquette County, said Matthew Moneymaker of the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization.

"We'll be looking for evidence supporting a presence. ... We hope to meet local people who might have seen a Sasquatch or heard of someone else who had an encounter," Moneymaker told the Daily Press of Escanaba.

The legend of Bigfoot dates back centuries. But skeptics have challenged accounts of sightings, and practical jokers have staged hoaxes that have included grainy film footage of people dressed in costumes.

But Moneymaker said members of his organization have either glimpsed Bigfoot or gotten close enough to hear the creature in all but three of 30 expeditions in the United States and Canada.

The late Grover Krantz, a Washington State University professor who specialized in cryptozoology, the study of creatures that have not been proven to exist, believed Bigfoot was a "gigantopithecus," a branch of primitive man believed to have existed 3 million years ago.

The Mongolian Death Worm

Allghoi khorkhoi, also known as the Mongolian Death Worm. Allghoi khorkhoi also means Intestine worm, because the worm resembles a cow’s intestines. It is bright red, two-four feet long and fat, just like a cows intestine. The Mongolians fear the worm and many consider just hearing the name of it bad luck. It is said to have the ability to kill people from several feet away, by either spraying a deadly poison or acid at the victim or by emitting electrical charges. Czech author Ivan Mackerle is the foremost investigator of the death worm, but because of the fear associated with the mere mention of the creature's name it makes it awfully hard to gather information. In addition this the Communist government kept the island isolated and outlawed all searches for Allghoi khorkhoi , which the government refers to as a “fairy tale.” Communism collapsed in Mongolia in 1990 allowing Mackerle the opportunity to mount an expedition to find the worm. Mackerle and his colleagues made friends with a couple of Mongolian nomads, that after a few bottles of Mongolian vodka were willing tell all they knew about the worm. The nomads said that the worm spits an acid that corrodes anything it touches turning it yellow. They also said the color yellow attracts more worms. They went on to tell the story of a young boy playing outside with a yellow ball. When the boy went inside the worm followed. The boy saw the worm and touched it and he was killed instantly. The boys parents found him dead and a trail in the sand leading away. They knew what had killed him and went off to kill the worm but instead the worm killed them.

Mackerle's group also encountered an old woman named Puret who had agreed to discuss the worm. "I have never personally seen the Allghoi khorkhoi," she said, "but I have heard much about it. It is said to move about under the sand, and when it wants to kill someone, it moves half its length out of the sand and starts to inflate. The bubble on its body keeps getting larger and in the end the poison squirts out from it."

If the Mongolian Death Worm is real it is highly unlikely it is a worm at all. Annelids and other related invertebrates are unable to survive in desert like conditions because their bodies retain moisture and they would quickly dry out. Perhaps it could be a worm that has adapted to the harsh environment of the desert, but most likely this is some sort of reptile, perhaps a snake. Mackerel had thought that maybe it was some sort of skink, a desert lizard that burrows deep in the sand with stubby legs and scales, unlike the reports of the smooth death worm. Also he said it may be a type of legless lizard, called worm lizards. Although these are not poisonous. Only the beaded lizard of Mexico and the gila monster of the southern states and Mexico are the only lizards that are known to have venom. It is also believed it may be a member of the cobra family. Many cobras posses the ability to spray venom, but not only couldn’t one survive in the desert, the venom the cobra sprays doesn’t kill, it only blinds.

There is also the matter of the Death Worms odd ability to kill from great distances with spraying venom. Some believe the worm to have some sort of psychic ability in that it is able to kill you by looking at you, while others believe, and it is more likely that the worm emits an electrical charge that kills it’s victim. Many fish, such as the electric eel, have the ability to produce electricity but of course none of these could live on land or even in the desert. The fact that it kills from a distance is most likely and exaggeration.

The worm itself is most likely fiction. The idea that there is a snake or reptile that lives in the desert and kills you as quickly as you see it is quite unlikely, unless, of course, it really is a species that hasn’t been classified before. Of course any animal that kills you in an instant could easily escape scientists. But then again if it kills so easily, how was anyone ever able to identify it in the first place. My personal guess would be that there is something out there that may have killed a few people or animals in a strange way and some drunk made up the story of a giant worm that kills you by looking at you. Big Cat Sightings Increase In United Kingdom

The 'Big Cat' mystery gathered pace this week, with more reports of sightings – assuring the cyclist at the centre of last week’s story that he certainly wasn't seeing things.

One family found themselves staring into the shiny eyes of a large black animal near a Cleckheaton playing field. A Ravensthorpe woman says she is sure it is a big cat which keeps digging deep holes in her garden.

And a Mirfield man says he saw a big black cat while out shooting.

Last week a cyclist was shocked to come face to face with a 'panther' on the Spen Valley Greenway at Dewsbury Moor. The 38-year-old admitted to being scared and proceeded to get the hell out of there.

But the sighting near chemical works at Heckmondwike Road supports a similar report.

Joyce Allatt of Ravenshouse Road has been mystified by happenings at the semi-wild end of her back garden."Something big is coming in there," she said. "It digs holes and climbs a tree. Clumps of leaves and such keep coming down. I keep filling up the holes but the next day they are scrabbled out again."

"I have lived here for more than 50 years and nothing like this has ever happened before," she said. "It doesn’t scare me though." She has found mangled takeaway cartons inexplicably left there.

Days before our story last week, a housewife in Church Lane, Dewsbury Moor, thought she was seeing things after spotting a large black cat near bushes in the grounds of Westmoor School.

"I couldn't believe my eyes," she said. "I thought people would think I was mad, and then I read the story in The Press."

At Cleckheaton, Debbie Ross, her husband, Stuart, and their daughter Kersha, 13, encountered the beast as they walked their three rottweilers on Friday evening.

The family left their Hill Street home and went by a large field behind Whitcliffe Mount School.

"My husband suddenly told us to stand still," said Debbie. "This animal was there - as big as one of our dogs.

"It was pure black with shiny eyes. We were about 80 metres away. It was much bigger than an ordinary cat, a hell of a lot bigger, and was just sitting on the path. Its ears were very pointed and its tail was huge."

"We got within 50 metres and it casually walked off into some bushes," said Debbie. "Stuart heard it growling."

The family then saw our reports and, concerned the sighting had been near a playground, reported it to a big cat website which monitors sightings.

A Mirfield man - who would not be named - said he saw something last autumn while out shooting near the rail station at Mirfield.

"As I shone my light I saw a rabbit and a dark shadow," he said. "I walked off but heard it following me and growling. I was within 10 to 15 yards of it.

"There was no doubt it was a big cat. It was black and had a very muscular, wide head. Certainly not a domestic pet.

"I had never seen anything like this and I was very scared. I was 10 minutes from my car and alone."

Rosealene Ballan from the Spen Valley area said: "My husband also saw the cat. He was crossing the bridge on the footpath across Spen Beck heading towards Spenborough sewage treatment works and Ponderosa.

"What he saw was black and it padded across the footpath and went under a gap in a fence. There was a print there, much too big for a domestic animal.

"Our cross-Staffie stood still and the hairs on her back stood on end.

"Our dog would have approached a dog and chased a moggie. Since then he’s found what looked to be a young badger chewed and stripped to the bone opposite the Ponderosa cafe."

Paul Westwood of the Big Cats Monitor said: "Most of the sightings have been near old rail lines and this is just the sort of territory big cats use. It certainly adds weight to the reports.

"Ravenshouse Road is just such an area, close to a dismantled line. The cats use these to get from place to place."

Mr Westwood collates information and if there seems to be substance investigates to gather evidence as to whether the sightings are feasible.

Flatwoods ‘Monster’ Might Be Turned Into a Movie

Move over, Mothman?

If the money comes in to finance a movie, you might not be the only weird West Virginia creature memorialized on film.

An independent filmmaker in Los Angeles says he would gladly handle a movie about the Flatwoods Monster — provided someone can put up sufficient financial backing for the project.

It was back on Sept. 12, 1952, that the 12-foot metallic oddity, emitting a sulfuric odor, horrified a gaggle of children and adults on a summer evening, after a fiery streak was spotted in the sky along a steep hillside in Braxton County.

A legend was born, unleashing torrents of speculation and inspiring a book by Frank Feschino, a star player in a Sept. 7-8 gathering in Charleston devoted to unidentified flying objects.

Using their own funds, Thomas Dickens and his partner, David Burke, are completing a feature-length film titled “Alien Gray Zone-X,” due to be released no later than next summer.

“This could be a great motion picture that could be done that could basically compete with Hollywood films,” Dickens says of a possible Flatwoods movie.

Dickens spoke glowingly of “Alien Gray Zone-X,” using such superlatives as “amazing” and “groundbreaking” to describe it.

“And that’s not just because of the special effects, but there’s a lot of human drama to it,” he said.

“There’s a love story and a lot of great fight sequences that use stunt people trained in fighting. There’s a message to it. Most films, and I don’t want to give away our ending, kill the aliens, but ours is different.”

Given the funds, Dickens would do the same for the Flatwoods Monster.

“I would love to do this movie,” he said. “My partner is interested. However, at this time, we don’t have the budget to do it.”

If he ever gets such a project launched, Dickens wants to work with Feschino as a part of his team for technical advice.

Feschino believes the monster was a space alien, part of a contingent engaged in a fiery sky battle with U.S. Air Force jets off the Atlantic Coast. The author also is convinced that UFOs continue to buzz the Braxton County area, since it is on a direct flight line to the White House and the regional terrain affords ample space in which to conceal craft.

“Basically, we would do everything,” Dickens said. “Write the script. Do pre-production. Design the creatures. Based on a true story, we would use the best research and witnesses to get the idea what this creature would look like. But we have to get a budget. We would be able to do the entire film.”

Dickens hopes to attend the September summit at the Capitol Theater in downtown Charleston, coming less than a week shy of the 55th anniversary of the Monster’s appearance. This also is the 60th anniversary of the Roswell incident.

Promoter Larry Bailey is promising attendees “hard evidence” to show UFOs are piloted by extra-terrestrials.

If a Flatwoods Monster film were made, Dickens said, he would envision some scenes on site, provided landowners are willing to grant access, including a depiction of what Feschino feels were aerial warfare between alien craft and U.S. jets.

In fact, that is the theme of Feschino’s latest book, “Shoot Them Down.”

Richard Gere starred in “The Mothman Prophecies,” a film dedicated to a moth-like creature said to roam an abandoned plateau near Point Pleasant in the area of an abandoned TNT site left over from World War II.

Unlike Mothman, a precursor to the 1967 collapse of the Silver Bridge that claimed 46 lives, no violence has been linked to the Flatwoods Monster.

A 17-year veteran of the film industry, Dickens says he strives to compete with Hollywood productions in quality.

“We don’t want to make anything that looks low-budget,” he said.

“We use people who look very professional. We use people that look like they have universal appeal.”

Bailey says he has attracted so much interest to his UFO gathering that he might expand it by adding a Sunday matinee, since the Capitol Theater has a seating capacity of only 660. As things stand now, Friday’s show runs from 6 to 10 p.m. with Saturday billed from 3 to 7 p.m.

An art contest supervised by Heritage Towers will reward children for the best depictions of UFOs or aliens.

Besides Feschino and Flatwoods eyewitness Freddie May, the two-day event will feature lectures by world-renowned UFO expert Stanton Freidman, who says the government has engaged in a cover-up since the 1947 incident in Roswell, where many believe the Air Force concealed the bodies of aliens after their craft crashed in the New Mexico desert.

Since the first Register-Herald story was published about the gathering, Bailey said he has been besieged by media outlets across the nation, including live radio remotes in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, Calif., Brownwood, Texas, Bridgeport, Conn., and Lincoln, Neb.

“We’re getting contacts from everywhere,” he said.

Eventually, the summit could evolve into an annual event, rivaling that of Roswell, now a mecca for UFO believers, Bailey says.

Skeptics are welcome, but they could find themselves hard put to counter Freidman, a nuclear physicist who has appeared on a number of cable television networks, the promoter says.

“Stanton has won two debates,” Bailey said. “They were with people that were scoffing or trying to tell everyone the UFOs were just meteors. He has some hard evidence that he uncovered under the Freedom of Information Act. That’s some of our hard evidence.”

The Flatwoods, Braxton County Monster, 1952

From the town of Flatwoods, of Braxton County, West Virginia, comes the mysterious tale of a burning craft which fell from the sky, and a mysterious being. The account began in the afternoon of September 12, 1952 when Sheriff Robert Carr and his Deputy Burnell Long received a call from witnesses who had seen the fiery object as it crashed into the earth. The unknown object had crashed on the Elk River, south of Gassaway. The natural assumption was that an airplane had faltered, and fallen from the skies. Not long afterward, a second unusual sighting was made by some school buddies at the Flatwoods School. Shortly before nightfall, four boys playing football saw something fall on a hill not far from the school playground.

The boys, at first frightened, succumbed to their youthful curiosity, and headed for the sight, which was on the property of one Bailey Fisher. They proceeded up the hill, stopping at the house of Kathleen May, excitedly telling her of what they had seen. Kathleen and her two sons joined the search party. Reaching the top of the hill, Mrs. May remarked that, …the night was foggy and there was a mist in the evening air." "… the air had a metallic smell which burned our eyes and noses." A dog was reported to have ran ahead of the group only to return with his tail between his legs, frightened by something.

Topping the hill, they could see a "glowing, hissing" object about 10 feet in diameter, about 100 yards away. Now completely dark, the night was shattered by two lights, about a foot apart. One of the boys had a flashlight, and when he turned it on the two distant lights, a creature ten foot tall appeared.."… a bright red face, bright green clothing, a head which resembled the ace of spades, and clothing which, from the waist down, hung in great folds". Suddenly, the creature began to "float" toward them, sending the group running back down the hill to the May house, where they quickly called the Sheriff.

The boys also called some of their schoolmates, and when the Sheriff arrived, the scene of the event was full of locals, who had to see the creature for themselves. Reporter A. Lee Stewart, of the "Braxton Democrat," began interviewing witnesses of the unusual event. He would later state that all of the observers were extremely frightened by what they had encountered. Stewart, accompanied by one of Kathleen May's sons, made their way back to where the creature had been spotted. Approaching the sight, Stewart was overwhelmed by an odd smell, but saw nothing unusual. Returning to the exact spot the next morning, Stewart could observe "skid marks" where some object had been.

Sheriff Carr believed that the group had actually seen a meteor, or comet come to earth. Reaching the top of the hill, they had seen some local animal's eyes shining through the dark, which they mistook as a monster. This explanation, though plausible, did not explain all of the eyewitness reports. The night of the monster, and the next night brought new revelations of unusual things. A resident of Birch River testified that he had seen a "bright, orange" object circling overhead the Flatwoods area. A woman and her mother stated that they also had seen the tall creature, about eleven miles from the spot of the first sighting. Well known investigator John Keel would make observations from the Flatwood incident also. Keel found one more couple, who had observed the monster, and had also seen unusual objects over the area. The case was also investigated by naturalist Ivan Sanderson, who took soil samples, and eye witness reports. His findings were not made public. The 1952 events of Flatwwoods remain a mystery.

Jellyfish-Shaped 'UFO' Spotted in Shanghai

Shanghai, Peoples Rep. of China - Several people reported seeing a jellyfish-shaped unidentified flying object about 8pm in Shanghai on Monday.

A man surnamed Zhu told Shanghai Morning Post yesterday that he saw the UFO in the sky at the crossroads of Jiujiang Road and Xizang Road M. in Huangpu District that night.

"It's definitely not a kite," Zhu told the newspaper. "It was flying quite high."

Zhu said the UFO was a blue-colored object and hovered around the area for several minutes and then flew away.

He tried to take a picture of the UFO with his cell phone, but since it was far away the photo only revealed a blurry image of a shiny object.

Zhu said the UFO was spotted by more than 100 people in the area, but so far, no clear picture of it has been released.

Experts at Sheshan Observatory have not yet responded to the report.

An unidentified flying object was seen above the boundary between Hongkou and Yangpu districts about 9pm on April 11.

Though many witnesses were convinced it was a UFO – the color of the V-shaped object changed regularly from red to blue to green and then yellow – an expert said it was just a night-light kite.

UFOs appeared over Shanghai and its neighboring area in 1987, 1990, 1991 and 1999. They were acknowledged as UFOs as no physics theory could explain their movement in the air, according to previous reports.

Missing: Large Lake in Southern Chile

SANTIAGO (Reuters) - A lake in southern Chile has mysteriously disappeared, prompting speculation the ground has simply opened up and swallowed it whole.

The lake was situated in the Magallanes region in Patagonia and was fed by water, mostly from melting glaciers.

It had a surface area of between 4 and 5 hectares (10-12 acres) -- about the size of 10 soccer pitches.

"In March we patrolled the area and everything was normal ... we went again in May and to our surprise we found the lake had completely disappeared," said Juan Jose Romero, regional director of Chile's National Forestry Corporation CONAF.

"The only things left were chunks of ice on the dry lake-bed and an enormous fissure," he told Reuters.

CONAF is investigating the disappearance.

One theory is that the area was hit by an earth tremor that opened a crack in the ground which acted like a drain.

Southern Chile has been shaken by thousands of minor earth tremors this year.

Flowers Grow From Steel

A Chinese man has reportedly found flowers growing from a steel pipe in his vegetable garden.

Grandpa Ding told Sohu News: "I was cleaning the pipes, then my hand touched something fluffy."

Ding says he was surprised to see the patch of tiny white flowers growing on the smooth steel.

"The stems are slimmer than human hair, and altogether there are 38 small white flowers on top," he said.

The flowers open in the mornings, then close when the sun grows strong. Each flower has a diameter of 1mm.

Ding has consulted his neighbours, who believe the flowers are the legendary Youtan Poluo flower, which blossoms only once every 3,000 years.

"No soil, no water. These flowers can bring me good luck," he added.

Newton's Fourth Law: We'll Die in 2060

Renowned British scientist Sir Isaac Newton, the father of modern physics and astronomy, predicted the world would end in 2060 in a 1704 letter that went on show in Jerusalem today.

A famed rationalist, who secured a royal exemption so that he would not have to follow the teachings of the Church of England, Newton nonetheless based his prediction on a Biblical text.

Working from verses in the Book of Daniel, the elaborator of the classical laws of gravity, motion and optics argued that the world would end 1260 years after the foundation of the Holy Roman Empire in western Europe in 800 AD.

The letter, on show at Jerusalem's Hebrew University as part of an exhibition entitled "Newton's Secrets", is part of an array of papers of the British scientist bequeathed to the institution by a wealthy collector of scientific manuscripts.

The university said it was the first time the letter had been put on public show since 1969.

Newton's late 17th century work at Cambridge University was the foundation stone of modern science until the discovery of relativity and quantum mechanics in the last century.

But it has long been known that the ground-breaking physicist from Grantham, England, also took a keen interest in superstitions of his day that have long since fallen foul of modern science.

Newton spent four years in the 1670s preparing a work on alchemy, the notion that base metals can be turned into gold.

‘Ghost’ Keeps People Guessing

Video Link

Santa Fe, NM -June 18, 2007 - Image captured on courthouse camera has viewers baffled

Apparition or reflection, that is the question.

A surveillance camera at the First Judicial District courthouse downtown captured a strange image Friday morning that left sheriff’s deputies, lawyers, clerks and judges scratching their heads as to what it might have been.

Some thought it was the ghost of a man killed at the courthouse more than 20 years ago after bringing a rifle to the building and taking several people hostage. Others felt it had to be a reflection from a passing car or a piece of cottonwood tree fluff. Still others threw their hands in the air, but somehow liked the image anyway or at least the hullabaloo it prompted.

“I don’t know what it is, but I think it’s neat that it showed up on a Friday,” said Sally Saunders, assistant to District Judge Stephen Pfeffer. “Now we have something to talk about.”

Deputy Alfred Arana first noticed the image when he arrived at the courthouse early Friday morning and began reviewing the surveillance video from the night before, said Sgt. Vanessa Pacheco of the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Department. Pacheco arrived half an hour later, and Arana said he’d seen something he couldn’t explain on the digital video and asked Pacheco to rewind it, she said.

When she watched the video, Pacheco was stunned. “It’s something unexplainable,” said Pacheco, who watched the 12-second clip over and over Friday. “I don’t believe in ghosts so I don’t think that’s what it is.”

The image, which starts at 7:27:11 a.m., shows a bright spot of light that comes from either the roof or near the courthouse’s back door on Catron Street — which is used only by law enforcement personnel. The light flits with buglike movements toward the west, appears to move across the front bumper of a parked police car and then traces a small semicircle in a gravel area in the frame’s foreground before leaving the frame at 7:27:23.

“To me, it looks like a person walking, but I don’t know why they have this neon light on their head,” said Steve Aarons, a lawyer.

The light looked a bit like a crab and seemed to crawl like a bug, though Pacheco and others who regularly look at the video said they’ve seen bugs on the lens before, and they don’t look like Friday’s image.

Perhaps the most bizarre aspect of the image is that it appears to cast shadows that look a bit like the movements of the invisible movie monster in the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film, Predator. Many who watched the video said the shadows looked like legs. Mary Marlowe, another lawyer, said she saw hands in the image.

Courthouse employees debated whether it might have been a reflection. However, the angle of the sun didn’t fit with the image, and a large tree outside the door shaded most of the area from above.

“It looks like a reflection of something but the angle of the sun is all wrong,” said Juanita Sena-Shannon, a court clerk.

District Judge Michael Vigil said he, too, thought it was a reflection at first, perhaps from a passing car. But when he looked closer, he realized a reflection would have moved in a straight line, which the light did not. “It doesn’t make sense,” the judge said. “It is bizarre.”

Arana said the footage was clearer when he first watched it than when it was replayed over and over Friday. During that first viewing, he said, it looked as if the light had stars in the shape of a diamond that were each spinning clockwise. Arana said he had no idea what the cameras might have captured.

“But after I saw it, I even went to the door to see if anything was there,” he said.

Deputy Anthony Maes, however, had no problem venturing a guess. “I say it’s a ghost,” he said. “What makes us think we’re the only beings on this planet? It’s too weird.”

Maes said he thought it might be the ghost of convicted murderer Andy Lopez, who took nine people hostage at the courthouse in February 1985 after killing the wife of his original victim. Lopez, who had a rifle at the time, was shot by a sheriff’s deputy when he peaked his head out the back door, said Judge Vigil. Deputies originally thought the incident might have taken place in June, and the alleged ghost was making an appearance on the anniversary of Lopez’s death, though that proved false.

Joanna Salazar, a victim’s advocate for the District Attorney’s Office, said she believed the image was of a spirit. “It’s a little girl, and she can’t find where she needs to be,” Salazar said. “Somebody disturbed her.”

Candy Sisneros, a clerk, said she thought it might have been a ghost disturbed by the construction of the city’s new convention center across the street. She said her husband, a sheriff’s deputy, used to work in the courthouse at night when the county’s dispatch center was located there, and he used to hear footsteps, doors opening and closing and elevators going up and down.

Jude Torres, 29, has worked at the court house as a janitor for four years and said he sometimes hears noises at night in the building.

“You sometimes hear the cells — like the doors closing.” he said.

He also hears the sound of water around the building but figured the Judge Steven Herrera Courthouse is an old building. However, the noises mainly originate from the same side of the building where the light was seen, Torres said.

To Torres, the image looked like an insect or a spider. He said he’s puzzled by what he saw on the video and would dismiss it outright if it wasn’t for the Predator-like shadow. “There’s just no explanation for that,” he said.

Earl Rhoads, a public defender, had a different take. “I think what you have is a piece of material from a cottonwood tree,” Rhoads said. “I’m not willing to say it’s proof of paranormal activity. I think it’s totally explainable.”

A Psychologist Witnessed a Living Pterosaur, According to American Author Jonathan Whitcomb

LONG BEACH, Calif./EWORLDWIRE/June 8, 2007 - A psychologist at a university in Central China asserts that he saw, in 1971, a prehistoric-looking creature flying in Papua New Guinea. Brian Hennessy of the Chongqing University of Medical Sciences described the creature as black or dark brown with a "longish narrow tail" and a beak that was "indistinguishable from the head." In the daylight of an early morning on Bougainville Island, on a dirt road that led down to the coast, Hennessy heard a slow "flapping" and looked up to see a "very big" creature with a "horn" at the back of its head. There was "not a feather in sight." After thirty-five years, in the summer of 2006, a friend of Hennessy referred him to the American, Jonathan Whitcomb, author of the book "Searching for Ropens," who interviewed him. The eyewitness account was added to the second edition of the book, which was published on May 30, 2007. Until 2006, Hennessy had been unaware of cryptozoological expeditions related to what he had seen. (Whitcomb's book tells how, in the 1990's, a few Americans began investigating, in Papua New Guinea, creatures described like living pterosaurs, commonly called, by Americans, "pterodactyls.") Hennessy was also unaware that many natives have names for giant flying creatures: One of those names is "ropen."

The American author noticed similarities between Hennessy's description and that of a creature reported 500 miles to the west, near Finschhafen, Papua New Guinea, twenty-seven years earlier. In 1944, Duane Hodgkinson, now living in Montana, saw a giant "prehistoric" creature flying over a clearing where he and another soldier were standing. Whitcomb had interviewed Hodgkinson in 2004 and realized, two years later, that both the American veteran and the psychologist had seen a dark flying creature with a long tail but no sign of feathers. Both men used the word "prehistoric." In 2006, Whitcomb showed Hennessy a series of sketches for determining the shape of the head, including the beak and the head appendage. (A similar questionnaire had been given to Hodgkinson two years earlier.) Whitcomb then drew a sketch based on Hennessy's answers, and concluded that Hennessy had seen, in 1971, the same type of creature that Hodgkinson had seen in 1944.

New Mt. Hood Mystery Photo

As the code tells anyone, this photograph was taken on June 7, 2007, at 7:11 p.m. by the same people who have had some luck with pictures from this same location. What do you think this latest trailcam image shows?

I have some ideas, but I don’t want to bias anyone’s looking at this with an open mind.

Before this new photo, the one before showed a close encounter of the elk kind.

See these below to compare with the new one above, and the original “Bigfoot mystery” photo (at the bottom), which, of course, shows a furry blob and no one knows what was captured in that now well-known image.

The original unknown object photograph, the mystery one first discussed here is directly below.

'Bigfoot' Sightings Spark Terror

Meghalaya State, India - June 11, 2007 - Authorities in India will investigate claims by terrified villagers that "bigfoot"-type hairy giants are roaming the jungles of the remote northeast.

The creatures have apparently been spoken of, and occasionally spotted, for years, but a rise in the number of sightings over the past month has prompted authorities to look into the matter further.

The bizarre sightings have reportedly been made in the Garo hills area of Meghalaya state, close to the borders with Bangladesh and Bhutan.

Villagers have dubbed the mysterious creatures "Mande Burung", or Jungle Man.

"A team of wildlife officials and other experts will conduct a study to find out if there is any truth in the locals' claims about these hairy giants,'' said Samphat Kumar, a district magistrate in the West Garo Hills district.

One local farmer, 40-year-old Wallen Sangma, claimed he had seen an entire family of the creatures - possibly a lowland relative of the Himalayan Yeti, or perhaps a distant cousin of the North American bigfoot known as Sasquatch, or Australia's Yowie.

"The sight was frightening: two adults and two smaller ones, huge and bulky, furry,'' he told an AFP reporter who visited the remote area on Thursday and Friday.

"Their heads looked as if they were wearing caps, and their colour was blackish-brown,'' he said.

The four "monsters" were about 30 to 40m away from him as he looked for firewood in a forest area.

"The four of them quietly vanished into the undergrowth,'' he said.

Such claims are treated sceptically by scientists because of lack of solid physical proof, but there are scientists and researchers who believe they could exist.

One Garo Hills group, the Achik Tourism society, has been trying to verify the creature's existence for the past 10 years, photographing footprints and thatched "nests" reported by locals.

"The descriptions given by people who saw the creature point to Mande Burung,'' said its head, T.K. Marak, a zoology professor at the state-run university in Tura, 323km from the state capital Shillong.

"There is no trace of any gorillas or other unidentified animals inhabiting here.''

The group says footprints it has photographed are 33-38cm long. It also says it has collected tufts of hair.

"We shall send these samples for DNA and other forensic tests,'' said Dipu Marak, also of the society.

In the meantime, some of the more intrepid villagers have begun their own investigation, venturing into the forest in the hopes of spotting the hairy creatures as their neighbours have done.

"Maybe only the fortunate ones have the chance to have a glimpse of the Mande Burung,'' said Abu Marak, a Garo local who claims to have seen a jungle man about three weeks ago.

Maine’s Mysterious Black Panthers

Portland, Maine (Wireless Flash 6-8-2007) Earlier this week a mysterious beast killed 29 sheep in Lincoln County, Maine, but oddly enough the animal didn’t eat any lamb chops.

Cryptozoologist Loren Coleman, author of “Mysterious America” (Paraview Pocket Books), says the answer to the attack might be found in black panthers, who aren’t indigenous to North America, but could be making a comeback and preying on unexpecting livestock.

Coleman says there have been recent sightings of the dangerous cougars in Illinois, Ohio, and New England, and reports that sheriffs and park rangers have witnessed the panthers’ true dark sides first hand.

As Coleman puts it, “Black panthers tend to kill lots of animals on rampages.”

Earlier report:

Toronto Sun, Friday, June 8, 2007 - Most of his flock is kept safe on remote islands, just off the rugged New England coast. But many of the rest, over the past week, have been slaughtered by a mysterious and vicious killer.

If this were most parts of rural North America, dead livestock would just be part of the cycle of life. But in Maine — where Stephen King-approved dark imagery covers every unexplained and bloody happening — the twin mass killings of Straw’s flock is quickly becoming the stuff of legend and speculation.

Last Sunday [June 3, 2007], the frustrated herder stacked the carcasses of more than a dozen dead sheep along the road near a Wiscasset, Maine, ranch. Straw’s animals had been allowed to graze and keep the grass trimmed and fertilized for a free stay on a local man’s spread.Things were largely peaceful on the coastal land, until last weekend’s reckoning.Sunday morning, 14 animals were found bitten to death — the killer or killers making their way over a one-metre-high electric fence.Local officials quickly ruled out coyotes, because only a couple of the bodies showed signs of being eaten. They were simply chewed up and left.Straw believes domestic dogs attacked at night, though no one heard or saw the predators.”I wanted to show people what happened — that if it was their dog, to lock them up — so I put the (bodies) along the road,” the 52-year-old rancher explains, on the phone from his home in Newcastle.Sunday morning’s attack brought back memories of finding 17 of his sheep dead in 2004. What animals were responsible then is still a mystery. If the latest attack was hard to stomach, the fact that whatever it was that killed the 15 came back the next night to finish the terrible job has made Straw livid.By Monday morning [June 4, 2007], another 14 sheep were found slaughtered. The survivors of Sunday’s attack were checked on into the night, but some time after 1 a.m. on Monday, almost all were taken down in the same gruesome way as their brothers and sisters. Other than the sheep who are on the islands, only two members of the original flock survive.Locals found the dead animals — including many pregnant ewes — slaughtered throughout their neighbourhood.Hair samples were taken from the scene, but no results have come back. The local department of inland fisheries and wildlife also thinks a group of dogs is likely responsible — memories of Stephen King’s famous Cujo, where an average Maine pet becomes a blood-thirsty killer.Others have even more novel ideas. Among the fraternity of those who believe the state harbours more than its share of secrets and unique beasts, some are pointing an accusing finger at a breed of a ghostlike black panther rumoured for years to be living and hunting in solitude.”Local officials always quickly … assume it’s dogs,” says Loren Coleman, a Portland, Maine, an author and North America’s most recognized “cryptozoologist,” who for years has tracked animals which are only hypothesized to exist. The fact that these were large kills may suggest something more alarming, he adds.”They weren’t eaten; they were simply killed (for fun).”

Internet chat sites and specialized “crypto” web sites have been closely following the story. For them, the phantom black panther is an obvious suspect, having been spotted around livestock kills in past years.

They’re not so sure one of the big cats will ever be caught. But rancher Straw, cursing dogs for bringing his meek and mild animals down, is convinced the truth is out there — likely asleep on someone’s living-room carpet.”I think we’ll get the animal responsible. I think we’ll find out what killed them.”

New Video Of The Loch Ness Monster?

Edinburgh, Scotland (AHN) - A Yorkshire man claims to have shot a video capturing the mythical Loch Ness monster. Gordon Holmes, a 55-year-old lab technician, was filming the lake where he captured an animal he says was about 45 feet long, moving at about 6 mph, on his camera.

"I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this jet black thing," Holmes told the AP. The video has stirred debate in the cryptozoology community, as the quality of the tape is fairly good.

Marine biologist Adrian Shine, who has watched the video, says it is some of the best footage he has ever seen. However, he still offers some explanations to describe the sighting. "It could be some biological creature, it could just be the waves of the loch or it could some psychological phenomenon in as much as we see what we want to see," Shine told the AP.

It is not for the first time that someone has claimed to have seen Nessie, the purported successors of pre-historic, dinosauric, aquatic reptiles. There have been thousands of sightings of Nessie over the decades, the most iconic being the one by a gynecologist in the 1930s.

However, the legend of Nessie is far more historic as it was also mentioned by St. Columba, one of the founders of the Christian church in Scotland, in the late 7th century.

Odd Stones Found In China Formed About 300 Million Years Ago

On May 27, 2007, several dozen "UFO" shaped gangues were found in Shangrao County, Jiangxi Province. Experts indicate that the UFO gangues were formed about 300 million years ago.

The UFO gangues were found in an abandoned heap of gangues. There are several coal mines around the heap. Gangues are the abandoned materials left after the coal has been extracted from the rock. Among these UFO gangues, several of them have diameters over 4.9 feet and thicknesses between 7.9 inches and 23.6 inches. They weighed between 1764 pounds and 1 ton.

An engineer from the Shangrao Coal Bureau suggested that the ages of the UFO gangues are between the Paleozoic Late Carboniferous and Early Permian, so they're about 300 million years ago.

Three Gorges UFO Stones Line Up Neatly

The UFO stones appear not only in Jiangxi, but they were also found near the Shuibuya Dam Project of the Sichuan Three Gorges Reservoir. The UFO stones there weigh about 44 pounds each.

Local villagers who were building the inter-village highway there found these UFO stones. The stones were located near Big Cave Bay in Shanlicheng Village of Badong Shuibuya. Big Cave Bay is a natural cavern. There's a clear stream flowing outside of the cavern. Xiang Zhiyu, a Qizu Village resident who worked on a section of the inter-village highway, found these strange stones when he was blasting the rocks near the Big Cave Bay area.

The UFO stones were lined up horizontally about 1.6 feet apart and are evenly distributed. It was reported that UFO stones have an especially hard texture. They are obviously different from the stones from the mountains in this area.

Scientists Solve Iceman Murder Mystery

ROME - June 6, 2007 - Italy’s prehistoric iceman “Ötzi” died from a shoulder wound inflicted by an arrow, according to research into his perfectly preserved 5,000-year-old body.

Ötzi, the oldest mummy unearthed, was found in the Italian Alps in 1991 wearing clothing made from leather and grasses and carrying a copper axe, a bow and arrows.

Though Ötzi’s body underwent several scientific tests to study life in the prehistoric age, it had so far been unclear whether he died from an arrow wound, a bad fall or severe freezing while climbing the high mountains.

Using modern X-ray technology, however, an Italian-Swiss research team said on Wednesday it had proved the cause of death as a lesion on an artery close to the shoulder, caused by an arrowhead that remains in the iceman’s back.

A large hematoma — or a collection of blood due to internal bleeding — could also be seen in the surrounding tissue, and the iceman probably died shortly after the lesion was caused, researchers concluded.

Researchers had previously suggested he was killed by a rival hunter after putting up a fight, and concluded that his final meals consisted of venison and ibex meat.

The latest results on the research appeared online in the Journal of Archaeological Science and will be published in the National Geographic next month.

New Indian “Bigfoot” Reports

The Telegraph, Calcutta, India, June 3, 2007 - Villagers in Garo hills claim to have sighted mythical giant

“Gigantic, hairy, ape-like…” was all that Abu Marak could utter in between gasps for breath.

Surrounded by villagers in the safety of his house near Durabanda in the West Garo Hills, Abu’s eyes still mirrored the excitement of spotting the animal. Within a few days, Abu’s account, coupled with those of a few other villagers, became the raw material for a renewed scientific search for the legendary Bigfoot — mande burung in Garo.

Sasquatch in North America, Yowie in Australia, Yeti in Nepal — Bigfoot has its share of dedicated followers across the globe. The creature, which is supposed to be about eight feet tall, is said to have been last sighted at Rongrigittim in South Garo Hills in July 2005, before making a reappearance in May [2007] this year.

The Achik Tourism Society, which has been on this elusive animal’s trail for the past few years, said the best sighting data was recorded in between January and March in 2002.

This year, the animal was spotted in forests between Nokrek and Chokpot.

“Soon after receiving news from the villagers, we sent our team on the trail of this unknown creature, but unfortunately we could neither see it, nor record any footprints,” said Dipu N. Marak, general secretary of the Achik Tourism Society.

By the time the villagers reported their findings, the mande burung had shifted its location, rued Dipu.

Before coming together as the Achik Tourism Society, Marak and his friends were engaged in compiling data about Bigfoot.

“We started our data collection on November 15, 1997, when the creature was first seen near Andol Chiring, in South Garo Hills,” Dipu said.

Information on the mande burung are available in the form of video footages and photographs of footprints, which measure between 14 to 15 inches and impressions believed to have been left by the creature on trees and nests.

“We have already alerted the Wild Life Trust of India after hearing about its sighting this year, but the authorities have shown little interest in the creature,” Dipu said.

The Achik Tourism Society has also apprised the deputy director of tourism in Tura about the findings.

Conservationists and biologists believe that the creature, which could be a descendant of the ancient primate, may have been living in the dense jungles of the Nokrek peak.

Author and Sahitya Akademi award winner Llewellyn R. Marak, who is also an avid follower of mande burung data — is optimistic that “one day the efforts by the villagers and youths to trace Big Foot will be rewarded.”

“I have seen the footprints of this creature. It’s really big and I am convinced that such a creature has a home in Nokrek,” he said.

Llewellyn came down heavily on forest guards and officials for not heeding the villagers’ reports.

“Very frankly, they (forest guards) are lazy and instead of listening to the villagers, they scold them.”

All attempts by conservationists to persuade the forest department to initiate a research into the mande burung have also proved futile.

But that has not dampened the spirit of those who have ceaselessly been collecting every detail to prove that elusive Bigfoot does existence.
