Florida's Nile Monitor Lizard Invasion Expanding

Nile Monitors, lizards that can grow up to 9 feet in length but are normally only found in Africa and Asia, are now invading parts of South Florida.

Nine of the formidable looking creatures were recently spotted in Broward and Palm Beach counties, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, a group that fears the monitors could undermine the natural ecosystem of the area if they continue to grow in number.

“This is a high-priority species for us,” Scott Hardin, who coordinates nonnative species programs at the commission, said in a statement earlier this week.

People are being warned that the huge lizards — equipped with long tails that they can use like whips, powerful jaws and teeth, and sharp claws — get extremely nasty when threatened, and thus attempts to capture the creatures are discouraged.

“Nile monitor lizards may exceed 7 feet in length and are known to be very defensive when cornered, so the FWC discourages attempts to capture the lizards. They are known to be more active during the hot summer months, explaining why reports have increased.”

What are the FWC’s plans for handling the monitor outbreak?

“We plan to go after them aggressively to either try to eradicate them or suppress their numbers if they are determined to be established.” - palmbeachpost

Giant lizards being hunted down in South Florida

They're not Godzilla size but large, nonnative lizards in two South Florida counties are being hunted down after alarming humans, including a homeowner who found one that slipped through a doggie door.

Nine of the critters — formally known as Nile monitor lizards — were seen recently in Broward and Palm Beach counties, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission warned.

"This is a high-priority species for us," Scott Hardin, who coordinates nonnative species programs at the commission, said in a statement Tuesday. "We plan to go after them aggressively to either try to eradicate them or suppress their numbers if they are determined to be established."

The commission urged residents to report sightings to 888-IVE-GOT1 instead of trying to deal with them personally.

"Monitor lizards may exceed 7 feet in length and are known to be very defensive when cornered, so the FWC discourages attempts to capture the lizards," the statement said. "They are known to be more active during the hot summer months, explaining why reports have increased."

Wildlife officials believe residents of South Florida who collect exotic animals as pets released the animals into the wild, either after the animals got too big or because they just didn't want the reptiles anymore, nbcmiami.com reported.

The commission said it was worried the lizards would undermine the natural ecosystem of the area.

"Nile monitors are large, predatory lizards native to Africa," it stated. "This species nests around water, and the FWC is concerned about potential predation in bird rookeries."

A population of Nile monitors is already established in an area of Cape Coral, on the southwest coast of Florida, it added.

Florida and the commission have their hands full dealing with wildlife issues. Nonnative pythons are spreading across the state and alligator/human incidents increase this time of year. - MSNBC

Nile monitor lizards invaded Florida and they're winning the battle

The biology professor from the University of Tampa bent down to the floor and pulled out of a black trash bag a fork-tongued, 5-foot-long, flesh-eating African lizard.

It was big, dead and about to be cut open. The professor dropped the lizard on a long plastic tray in the environmental resources building here. The body hit the counter with a thud.

"Welcome to Cape Coral," Todd Campbell said.

These things live here, thousands of them, in this sprawling city in the southwest corner of the state. They're not supposed to live here, of course, which is why scientists like Campbell call them an invasive species.

Invasion implies a war, which is appropriate. That's what this is.

Us against them.

This particular conflict has been going on for almost a decade now. The battleground is the city's more than 400 miles of man-made canals.

The lizards' weapons include: sharp, snake-like teeth, long, muscular tails they use as whips, and claws that look like the sinister pendants of voodoo necklaces. They can run up to 18 miles per hour on land and swim under water for an hour at a time.

What do we have? We've got traps. Metal traps rigged with rancid hunks of chicken backs. And we had vigilance.

Here, though, is the latest development in this ongoing struggle: Cape Coral, so reliant on real estate, has gone in the past couple years from speculative fever to spectacular failure. This is a city in retreat. Water-logged phone books bake in the sun on the stoops of abandoned homes. The signs on the dying lawns say what's gone wrong: FORECLOSURE, SHORT SALE, BANK OWNED.

This just in from the fighting at the front:

"At this point in time," said Campbell, the Tampa professor, "the monitors are winning."

• • •

The story of how they got here starts with how we got here.

Once upon a time this was saw palmettos and slash pines and mangrove swamps. Hardly anyone lived here. Then came air conditioning and two brothers from Baltimore who had made a fortune hawking hair products decided in the late 1950s to start selling subdivided Florida to pasty-skinned Northerners.

Jack and Leonard Rosen turned swaths of acreage into all those canals and marketed their new city as a "Waterfront Wonderland." The population that was less than 300 in 1960 was more than 30,000 in 1980 and more than 100,000 in 2000.

Around 1990 is when people started seeing … what was that?

The Nile monitors, Varanus niloticus, are here for the same reason the Brazilian pepper trees are here, and the palms from Asia, and the pines from Australia, and the fish from Central America visible in the canals eating the torpedo grass, and also the pastel stucco 3/2 on Surfside Boulevard.

We put them here.

Local legend has it that a pet store went bankrupt sometime in the '80s and the proprietor let loose a gaggle of monitors in an area where, back then, almost nobody lived. Another theory is that wholesale distributors of exotic pets dumped monitors on purpose in the hope that they would procreate and provide a steady inventory to later be caught and sold. A third idea is that a series of owners over the years bought monitors when they were still small and then couldn't or didn't want them anymore when they began to grow into small dinosaurs.

This much is certain: All the canals weren't good just for luring buyers of homes.

They also created a Nile monitor paradise.

• • •

Enter professor Campbell.

The biologist got $50,000 in grants from state and federal wildlife foundations to come to Cape Coral for two years in parts of '03, '04 and '05, to trap the monitors, study the monitors and maybe even eradicate the monitors.

He learned they're not picky eaters. Bugs, frogs, smaller lizards, turtles, birds, rodents, baby alligators, endangered gopher tortoises, endangered burrowing owls, the eggs and offspring of any of these animals, feral cats, domestic cats, possibly even the family dog, road kill, whatever.

They sometimes hunt in packs.

Their disposition is disagreeable.

They live an average of 12 years.

Smaller females, say 3 feet long, once a year produce clutches of six or so eggs. Bigger females, close to twice that size, can lay up to 60.

In their native Africa, where they live in burrows on the banks of rivers, they have a natural predator, but there aren't any crocodiles in Cape Coral — only the occasional gator or metal trap.

But the main thing Campbell learned?

Eradication was an overly optimistic aim.

"Nile monitors," he wrote in his final report in '05, "continue to horrify the residents of Cape Coral by climbing on their houses, attacking their pets and scaring their children. … They have the potential to devastate native fish and wildlife populations."

Monitor stories started to hit the local papers. One couple said they believed a monitor ate their elderly cat, leaving behind on the bank of the canal only his white paws and black tail. Another woman was sitting in her backyard and saw a monitor run by with a dying baby owl jammed in its jaws. She gave chase with a flower pot.

Meetings were had. Citizens talked to state wildlife officials in the hope that state wildlife officials would talk to national wildlife officials in the hope that a chunk of federal money might lead to a more concerted extermination effort.

It didn't happen. What did happen was the economy started to turn.

Over these past couple lean years, the city has had one man in the environmental resources division who devotes approximately 30 hours a week to trying to trap monitors, and two more who help when they can. It's reactive, limited "bait and wait," better than nothing.

But the program relies on calls from citizens.

The eyes and ears of a city that's shrinking.

• • •

We're in the worst recession since the Great Depression. Florida is worse off than most of the rest of the country. Cape Coral is worse off than most of the rest of Florida.

The value of property in Lee County dropped in the 2008-09 tax year by $30 billion. There are still an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 houses in some stage of foreclosure.

The population of Cape Coral, according to the city, peaked a year and a half ago at more than 177,691. It's now almost 10,000 less. The people here say the dip feels steeper than that.

Here's where the lizards come in.

"The less people here," said Harry Phillips, a biologist for the city, "the less sightings we have."

The city in the past couple years used to get about 40 calls a month. Now: more like 18 to 20.

Monitors trapped: 69 in '07, 45 in '08, 17 so far in '09.

"In this economy," Phillips said, "there isn't going to be a widespread trapping effort right now."

"That's kind of been the most frustrating part of this," said Scott Hardin, the exotic species coordinator for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission in Tallahassee. "There's no pot of money."

A widespread eradication effort, said Rick Engeman, a biologist at the National Wildlife Research Center in Colorado, might cost $70,000 per trapper, per year, for salary and equipment. And it would require multiple trappers for multiple years.

By now, Phillips said, the city's monitor population could be 1,000.

That's it?

"Maybe 2,000."

Really?

"Could be 5,000."

Or more?

"We really don't know," he said.

Cape Coral in the summer.

It's ghastly hot and sweat-stain wet. The snowbirds go home. It's no place to be. This is when we slow down and wait for relief.

Not the Nile monitors.

They like it like this, the hotter, the wetter, the better. They're only here because we were here first, but being in this city right now, looking at us, then looking at them, you start to wonder: Do the invasive Nile monitors like living here more than the people who are trying to trap them?

They're down there, in the man-made canals, and you might not see them, but you sure see their burrows, deep holes dug into the dirt on the banks, and if you traipse around all that Brazilian pepper and cabbage palm they'll smell you before you see them.

Splash.

This, for them, is the part of the year when they're most active. They're moving, eating, looking for mates. They're making more babies. - tampabay.com

Mysterious bubble-like light burst seen over Hawaii

Footage of this incredible bubble-like burst of light in the night sky was captured by cameras at an astronomical observatory in Hawaii.

Sky watchers have been flooding internet forums with speculation about the burst, filmed by a webcam mounted on the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope on Mauna Kea.

Captured in time-lapse footage, the glowing sphere takes several minutes to expand until it virtually fills the frame - then it vanishes as mysteriously as it appeared.

Theories as the cause of the mysterious luminous sphere have ranged from the opening of an inter-dimensional portal to the future to a battle between two alien starships.

But the most likely explanation is that is shows a U.S. Minuteman III inter-continental ballistic missile (ICBM), ejecting fuel as it enters the upper reaches of the Earth's atmosphere.

The time-lapse footage shows the night horizon filled with stars, when suddenly an ethereal arc pops into view.

It rapidly expands, forming a circular shell which grows as it travels across the horizon, then fades as it fills the view.

According to Discover Magazine's Bad Astronomy blog, the soap bubble-like characteristics of the light burst indicate that it has been caused by a 'sudden impulse of energy and rapid expansion of material'.

Citing online astronomy forums, Bad Astronomy reveals that a Minuteman III ICBM had been scheduled to launch from Vandenburg Air Force Base, California, three minutes before the burst was observed, at about 3:35am Hawaii time.

The stars of the Cassiopeia constellation are visible in the horizon behind the burst, indicating that the webcam was pointed north-east - towards the base and the missile's probable flight path.

Again citing internet forums, the blog speculates the burst could have caused by a charges in the missile's third stage detonating to kill its thrust as it arcs across the Earth.

At a pre-determined moment, ports in the side of this section of the missile are blown open by explosive charges, allowing remaining fuel to be dumped fast.

This rapid fuel dump cuts the missile's thrust at precisely the right time allowing the warhead to be targeted with devastating accuracy at the right spot back on the surface of the Earth.

As the missile is above most of the Earth's atmosphere at this point, when the fuel gas is suddenly ejected it blows away from the missile in a perfect sphere - which could explain the bubble-like characteristics of the light.

For this explanation, the timing seems to be right. However, it is only a theory and there has not yet been any official confirmation of the claims. - dailymail

Did Shakespeare have reefer madness?

Did Shakespeare smoke weed? University of the Witwatersrand anthropologist Francis Thackeray thinks he did. He'd like a chance to prove that, and also learn more about the Bard's life and death, by digging up his body. (Maybe they'll also determine if Shakespeare was Shakespeare, but that's another story.) In 2001, Thackeray and his colleagues unearthed pipes in Shakespeare's garden that tested positive for marijuana, cocaine, and other substances. From RAW Story:

Wikipedia Commons A A2 Shakespeare "We have incredible techniques," Thackeray told Fox News. "We don't intend to move the remains at all..."

"The pipes we tested still had dirt in them which preserved the residues inside the stem and bowl," Van der Merwe said. "The readings we got were the same as if it had tested a modern-day crack pipe."

Camphor, myristic acid, and quinoline were among other substances detected in the pipes.

"Myristic acid, which is found in nutmeg, has hallucinogenic properties, and camphor, perhaps, was used to hide the smell of tobacco or other substances," Thackeray noted in 2001.

'Whitebirk witches' given anti-social behaviour orders

Two girls who were known as the "Whitebirk witches" have been given anti-social behaviour orders (Asbos) for terrorising their neighbours.

Amanda Holt, 16, and Tori Duxbury, 15, caused problems for people living in the Whitebirk area of Blackburn, magistrates were told.

Police said they received a "catalogue of complaints" about the pair.

They included intimidating people, throwing stones at cars, damaging property, shouting and swearing.

Police said one resident felt like a prisoner in his own home and would keep his lights off after dark so the girls did not know he was home.

He also checked they were not outside before leaving his home.

The Asbos - which are in place for two years - prevent the girls from entering an area of Whitebirk, except when Duxbury is in the company of her mother.

They are also banned from being outdoors in a public place in Blackburn between 2200 and 0500 BST until 31 December.
'Targeted the vulnerable'

The pair cannot see each other or six other youths, nor can they act or incite others to act in an anti-social manner.

Pc Tom Sanford, of Lancashire Police, said: "The behaviour of these two girls has been unbearable for the other people living in the area.

"They targeted many properties and residents, many of whom were vulnerable.

"We are committed to making sure Blackburn is not blighted by this type of behaviour and will continue to use tactics such as Asbos to rid local communities of such nuisance."

Linda Clegg, Blackburn with Darwen Council's director of children's, safeguarding and protection services, said the local authority was working with the girls and their families to ensure they adhered to the orders. - BBC

Bright Lights / UFOs Reported Over the Mid-Atlantic - June 29th

The MUFON CMS received a number of similar reports from the Mid-Atlantic area and Ohio of very bright lights seen on June 29th between 10-10:30 PM EDT:

Maryland: My girlfriend M. and I sat down to relax on my parents patio. We had just eaten dinner and decided to light a fire. We were facing southeast towards Haystack Mountain, seated next to each other talking, and I had just opened a beer (my first one of the night, alcohol played no factor in the sighting). I remembered looking up and noting how clear the sky was as the sun was setting, and glanced straight up above our heads and saw a light like a star, only much much brighter, like 10 or 20 stars worth of bright. I thought it was a plane with a reflection, but the sun had set long ago. It was moving, but kinda gliding along, it didnt seem propelled, and initially in a southeast direction. I nudged M. and pointed up at the light. She stopped mid-sentence and stared. so did I. I said something about it being totally silent. Thinking it was gone over the mountain and behind the trees, i said jokingly "I hope they come for us!" and took a drink from my bottle. If nothing happened after this point I would have still thought the light was out of place, it just seemed like it wasnt supposed to be there. i glanced up again to where i saw the object last, and it was just moving through the same space in the trees as it had just moved. I know that sounds insane, but the only way I can describe it is: Glitch in the Matrix. Like in the movie The Matrix when the cat walks in front of the door twice, like its on a loop. Only it seemed brighter and bigger than before. My girlfriend saw the same thing. I just cant make sense of what happened there. It was moving fast enough that it should have kept going over the mountain and out of sight, it was like magic. All of this happened in about 15 - 30 seconds. Hard to tell really my jaw was hanging open. I had to get a better look so I ran out to the alley behind the house for a better look, about 30 feet east of where we first saw it, and it wasn't in the part of the sky i expected it to be, it was further down the mountain towards Cumberland. It seemed to be moving faster as I was yelling for M. to come look. From the time she walked from one end of the driveway to the other it had changed from a solid bright white light, like a star much bigger than any in the sky maybe 10 or 20 times, down to the shape and size of a dim red star on a clear night, and vanished. It looked like light that just faded out smoothly to a single point, then gone. I cant give you a distance from us to the craft with any accuracy, but it was maybe 50 - 200 feet above Haystack Mountain when it faded out, so maybe 250 - 500 feet directly above us at first sight. I was excited, and M. was just saying "what was that? what was that?". And to make it creepier, there was not a sound to be heard, my parents live in a fairly quiet and secluded place. there was no sound. that was not an airplane, blimp, or helicopter. I am still trying to wrap my brain around this one. I wish i had a photo, but honestly it would look like a photo of stars, one being much brighter than the others. Feel free to ask any questions, i will give as much information as I can. Thanks for your time.

Maryland: I was standing in a field behind my house at 10:10 admiring how clear the night was when a very bright white light appeared in the Northwest sky. The light reminded me of a halogen spotlight intensity. It was at least 5 times the size of Venus at full magnitude. It was a constant light with no blinking lights that are seen on conventional aircraft. It flew overhead toward the southeast horizon. The light stayed on a straight course but did seem to slow down as it reached the sky above me. No sound was emitted from the object. It appeared to be flying halfway between the ground and the cruising altitude of jets. As it reached the Southeast sky the light quickly faded out and abruptly disappeared. It was nowhere near the horizon and should have been visible for another minute or so before disappearing. I have spent countless hours looking at the night sky and have never seen anything like this. I had an obvious feeling that I was watching something that was not anything conventional.

Virginia: It was around 10:20 (maybe a little after...could have been about 10:25) or so last night and I was watching tv in my room. I was staying up to see if I could view the rocket launch from VA beach that was going to happen at 11:10. For some reason, I had the feeling to look out of my bedroom window (which faces the NW - the rocket was to be seen SE). It was a very clear night and I noticed that up in the sky, there was a large bright (brighter than the stars) ball of light. It definitely was not a star, it was much larger than all the stars, it was not as high up in the sky as the stars. There wasn't a color, it was almost like a lightbulb compared to the stars. The light did not flicker, blink, or anything like that. It was just a ball of bright light. It moved very smoothly and very slowly across the sky in a straight line. I've never seen anything like that before and I was really thinking that it might turn out to be a plane or something, so I kept watching it get closer and closer. The object never changed or moved away from the straight line path it was on. There were no lights blinking or any other lights around just the one ball of light. It was starting to get out of my sight from my view in my room and I wanted my husband to see this, so I went down 2 flights of stairs to the basement, tried to wake him up (was unsuccessful), went back up to the 1st floor and out the back door so I could keep watching this light. I was still able to continue watching it pass over a large area across the sky for another 2 minutes or so. The light then all of a sudden just dimmed right out (took just a moment) and then it was gone. I would say that the entire viewing of this light lasted about 7 minutes. I was able to see the rocket launch at 11:10 and the rocket was actually seen at the exact spot that light dimmed out. I thought that was ironic. All in all, I have never seen anything that made me think I saw a UFO until last night and I am intrigued to keep my eye on the sky now!

Pennsylvania: i just got out of shower,,abt 10;15pm,,had that feeling again,to go out and lookup at all the stars out, very clear tonight,as soon as i went out back,i looked up,towards se,i saw a big huge low star,im thinkin, hmm, cool, wonder what star that is,than,i noticed ,its moving real slow, cool, its another ufo,it was very, big and bright, very low,i watched it going se,in about another min,it dimmed, then disappeared into nowhere,as,alot of them do i see, some go all the way across the sky till out of view, some just vanish,/it was,not a aircraft,i was in the military,i now what planes look like,,it was not flashing,or a shooting star, but ,a typical ufo,/its about the 12th i've seen, this yr,i saw another low 1 just like this about a month ago,at abt 3am,low and slow going ne,i havent seen many this yr,i wonder why not, cause, last yr,i,and my friends saw about 45,ufo's,flying over nwpa, usa,,over warren, always at night,on clear nights, between, sunset, and before sunrise,i have seen a few in daylight, and they look like stars moving, the summer before, was real crazy,here,we,saw,like,75 ufo's,/up,til,a couple yrs ago,i never saw more than 15-20,in my life, somethin's goin on,and i saw,on history channel, last yr,that 2 yrs ago,,in summer, more ufo's were reported over pa,than ever before,i can attest to that, note, when i see them, they are always star like, moving, slow, than, increasing speed all off a sudden to like infinity, most real high,a few, very low and slow, than, they speed up real, quick,i have only seen a few,go in different zig-zag,directions,,well,thats it for my report, for now,i will keep lookin up at the stars at night, for more.//ps,in my opinion, the ufo's,are either, our's,or thier's,i've never seen any aliens yet,,or been abducted, that i know of,..

Pennsylvania: My wife was out on the back patio waiting for the dogs while they did thier business at about 10:05PM and then she called me outside at 10:10PM to look at this bright round white light in the sky slowly moving from the north-west to south-east direction with no sound. We watched it for about 5 minutes and then the went out and it was gone. There were no blinking maker lights that you would see on airplanes since we live close to the airport and see air traffic over our house very often. It appeared to be flying higher than the normal air traffic that was taking off from the airport but lower than another airplane that was higher up in the sky with red blinking marker lights flying in the north-west direction. The sky was very clear tonight with no clouds.

Ohio: On June 29th around 10:10pm I was standing on the back deck of my house with my husband. A bright light in the sky caught my eye, when it was almost overhead as it came into view from the side of my house. It was coming from the North heading South. Both of us were amazed by how bright it was. Airplanes almost never fly that path over our house as well. It was a yellow/white light…. maybe three times the size of the biggest and brightest star or planet in the sky. It flew overhead at the speed of a regular airplane, but seemed low and was completely silent. I ran in the house and grabbed my binoculars. When I first pointed the binoculars at the moving bright light…it was almost blinding, and no other lights could be seen. No red, or blue lights like a regular plane. As the bright moving light flew out of sight I could see other airplanes in the area on both sides one flying to the East, and another flying to the West. This light was so bright it was the most oddest thing to see fly over…. especially in comparison to the other planes in the area.

Bigfoot Duo Reported at Nelson Lake, Wisconsin

I received this email last evening from a young man in Sawyer County, Wisconsin who claims to have witnessed two Bigfoot, an adult and juvenile, while fishing:

Sir - I am writing about a sighting I had on June 26th around 8:00 pm at Nelson Lake, Wisconsin. I was fishing from my canoe about 30 yds. from the shore near Tanning Point when I noticed a whimpering sound. It was coming from the woods at the shoreline. It sounded like a dog whining, so I stopped what I was doing to watch the woods to see if anything appeared. After a few seconds I saw a child scampering from the woods. I didn't get a very good look but the child had very thick brown hair all over it's body and was very small (human toddler size). It quickly showed itself then bolted back towards the woods.

I sat there in shock. But within seconds I heard three distinct and angry 'grunts'. I then saw a large ape-like head rise above the lower tree boughs. The eyes were barely visible but I could tell that it didn't want me there. That was enough for me so I started to paddle towards the north shore when all of a sudden I heard a loud 'plop' then 'splash' from behind the boat. I turned around in time to see another rock heading in my direction. It was many yds. from me but I got the message.

I was shaking from the time I witnessed these beasts up until a few hours later when I was in my home office pondering what I had seen. I think it may have been Bigfoot. I Googled 'Wisconsin Bigfoot' and your blog came up. Was this a Bigfoot? I'm not an outdoorsman though I enjoy canoeing and fishing. Have there been other sightings in this area? Is there a danger? I appreciate your help.

I am a state employee so I would prefer my identify remain confidential. Thank you.

Seeley, Wisconsin Bigfoot Buzz

According to the Sawyer County Sheriff’s Department, two deputies responded to an alleged Bigfoot, or Sasquatch, sighting on Highway 63 just south of Seeley on the evening of Jan. 3.

Since then the sighting has been the topic of conversation in that small community, with multiple reported sightings being called in to the Sawyer County Record office since.

Chief Deputy Tim Zeigle confirmed that two deputies responded to the call, only to find footprints and hair at the site. But “unless Bigfoot was wearing boots,” Zeigle laughed, “I think it’s pretty much a prank.

“A lady called in and said ‘You probably think I’m nuts, but I’m not … I have not been drinking.’ She reported seeing a Bigfoot or someone dressed in an ape suit on Highway 63 near Stark Road,” Zeigle said. “We sent a couple officers up there and what they found was a set of foot tracks going from the road to the timberline and back to the road and they also found a long, black hair.” He affirmed that there have been no sightings since then.

But the story takes a curious turn from there.

According to another reported sighting obtained by the Record, a Wausau man, who wishes to remain unnamed, and his nephew were snowmobiling on a trail just southwest of Seeley when they saw something unusual cross the trail.

“I don’t know what I saw, but my nephew and I both saw something very real,” he said. “We only saw legs from the hips down as it was caught in the headlights of our snowmobiles. It stepped out of the woods, walking upright, and stepped across the trail right in front of my nephew who was ahead of me 20-30 feet.

“The legs were long (and) covered with long dark hair,” he continued. “My first thought was it was a drunk walking through the woods after leaving the Sawmill Saloon, but that makes no sense. We were quite a ways west of the Sawmill and there is no trail or crossing anywhere near there for someone to be walking.”

After gunning their snowmobiles past, the two turned around to explore the area and find tracks. But they had not marked the spot with a landmark and were unsuccessful at finding any sign when they returned to the area.

“We saw these legs for only a very brief moment, but again, it was very real,” he added.

Following up on the sighting, a number of possible theories have been revealed.

Cindy Ferraro of the Sawmill Saloon said that one potential explanation is that something was roused when the managed portion of the Uhrenholdt Memorial Forest south of Highway OO was cleaned up a few months ago. She said a friend who lives in the Seeley Hills area has reported unusual behavior coming from her dogs lately; they seem to be agitated by something out of the ordinary.

NOTE: I believe Seeley, Wisconsin is near Nelson Lake, northeast on Rt 63. Here is a link to a previous sighting reported to the BFRO - Man recalls encounter at a cabin on Nelson Lake...Lon

Fortean / Alternative News: Cyclops Shark Found and Cylinder UFOs Over Indiana / Illinois

Bizarre-looking shark caught in Sea of Cortez baffles scientists

Lots of odd creatures come from the sea, and add to the list a one-eyed bull shark fetus that was removed from the body of its captured mother recently off La Paz, Mexico, in the Sea of Cortez.

A brief story about the shark is on the Pisces Sportfishing blog. Pete Thomas Outdoors shared the top image with two shark experts in California and both were skeptical at first, suggesting it was some kind of hoax.

Ciclope One of them jokingly identified the species as a "Cycloptomus" because of a single eye -- if it is, in fact, an actual eye -- located just above the mouth.

But Tracy Ehrenberg, general manager at Pisces Sportfising, has been in touch with renowned shark expert Felipe Galvan, who has seen the shark and has even produced a paper on the discovery.

The paper is under scientific review. More information will be shared here when it becomes available. - petethomasoutdoors

Rare Deep-Water Giant Squid Found In South Florida

University of Florida researchers received a rare 25-foot-long, deep-water giant squid Monday, the only one of its kind in the collections of the Florida Museum of Natural History.

Recovered by recreational fishermen who found the creature floating on the surface about 12 miles offshore from Jensen Beach Sunday, museum scientists collected the specimen from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Tequesta Field Laboratory in Palm Beach County and returned to the Gainesville campus late Monday.

"It's so rare to get these specimens and they're such deep-water animals that we don't know much about how they live," said John Slapcinsky, Florida Museum malacology collection manager. "This specimen provides an excellent opportunity to learn things about these creatures we couldn't find out any other way."

Robert Benz, who was fishing with friends Joey Asaro and Paul Peroulakis, said they spotted the giant squid, Architeuthis dux, about 11 a.m. After realizing what it was, the men slid the dying squid onto the back of their 23-foot boat.

"I thought we definitely need to bring it in, because no one's going to believe us if we don't," Benz said. "I didn't want to leave it out there and just let the sharks eat it."

Giant squid only reproduce once in their lifetime, and then often die slowly, after becoming lethargic, Slapcinsky said. The animal was likely in that state when the fishermen found it, he believes, because it was barely alive and near the surface in 170 feet of water.

Giant squid are one of the largest invertebrates, growing up to 60 feet long and weighing more than 1,000 pounds, but because they are seldom seen, little is known about their reproduction, ecology and life span. Depicted as sea monsters throughout history, squid are normally deep-water dwellers and some are known to spar with sperm whales, a common predator, Slapcinsky said.

"This is a pretty massive animal," he said. "It took about six people to move it, and it wasn't light."

The animal is white with red skin containing chromatophores, or color-bearing cells. Squid can activate these pigment cells, rapidly changing their color and color intensity for communication and in some species camouflage, Slapcinsky said.

The specimen is from the same genus as the giant squid depicted in the Florida Museum's 2006 temporary exhibit, "In Search of Giant Squid." The exhibit produced by the Smithsonian Institution focused on the fact the creature had never been witnessed alive in its natural habitat — a feat later accomplished by a Japanese film crew.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission scientists extracted genetic samples from the squid, which were brought with the specimen to UF. Scientists injected formalin into the body cavity before submerging the squid in a 10 percent solution of the preservative.

"It looks nice, it's still in fabulous shape and it's big," Slapcinsky said. "It would be really cool to exhibit something like this, if it turns out that it preserves well enough and we can find a way to exhibit it so that it doesn't damage the specimen."

It will take about two weeks to complete the preservation process, after which researchers will further examine the squid to determine its sex and age and compare it with other specimens. Scientists hope to gain a greater understanding of the life of these elusive creatures, including their range, diet and how they reproduce.

The genetic data will be of particular interest to researchers trying to determine if there are one or more species of giant squid, said museum invertebrate paleontologist Roger Portell.

"We don't really have a good handle on the biogeography of these critters, so this will add to that knowledge base," Portell said. "Because they are so rare, we have so few samples where we get a fresh specimen and can actually do genetic work." - underwatertimes

Cylinder Shaped UFOs Reported Over Indiana and Illinois 6/28/2011

MUFON CMS - 6/28/2011 - Illinois: I was heading North on I57 at the Chebanse 302 exit ramp. There was two of us that seen it at the same time. We parked the car and got out to stare at it. It was climbing higher moving straight up... maybe curving a little tiny bit East. We ruled out an jet due to the odd looking shape. Also, I have never seen a smoke tail look like that. The smoke trail was rather short but, fanned out .. was quite amazing. At first we thought we were looking at the asteroid. After watching it and realizing it was moving UP..and its maneuvers led me to the conclusion it was indeed a UFO.

MUFON CMS - 6/28/2011 - Kokomo, Indiana: While smoking in the parking lot of my business, observed a large dull silver/gray cylinder flying at high altitude from E - W high in the sky. It was a nearly cloudless day, and I was with my co-owner, who also witnessed the craft. She went inside and grabbed binoculars - which I used to observe the craft in more detail. No wings, no tail, no contrail. A large cylinder, at least twice the size of a large jetliner, with rounded ends vs pointy nose and tail. Estimated altitude 30,000 ft. There was no sound, but from that altitude and distance, not surprising. We watched as the cylinder crossed the sky over Kokomo slightly to our North from East to West - a total of maybe two minutes - last seen heading over Burlington due West of Kokomo.

German Pet Rabbits Fed Cannibis

Police in Brandenburg who discovered a large plot of cannabis called on the neighbouring house only to find an 84-year-old woman who had been feeding her rabbits with the plants. “The rabbits really like it,” the woman told officers who called on her in the village of Golzow near Belzig.

A police officer had seen the healthy, metre-high plants from the road while on his way to work and told his colleagues, who visited the plot’s owner – the elderly woman. She told them that she had not grown the plants herself, but that they had simply started growing there, and had proven to be excellent rabbit food.

Not only did the rabbits love eating the plants, they grew back very quickly after she cut them down, she told the investigating officers. A spokesman for the Brandenburg police said her explanation had sounded plausible, but the officers could not leave her with the plants, rather cut them all down and took them to the forensics laboratory for testing.

The three large plastic sacks of weed will now be tested to determine the level of THC – the psycho-active ingredient in cannabis - they contain. There was no official comment on what the elderly woman was expected to feed her rabbits with now.

Wildfires threaten Los Alamos nuclear lab

Doug Tucker, fire chief: "We're doing our best to keep it off the lab"

One of the top nuclear weapons research facilities in the US will remain closed until Thursday as fire fighters battle a wildfire raging at its boundary.

Only "essential-duties" staff at Los Alamos National Laboratory will be permitted on site on Wednesday.

Officials at the New Mexico facility have said they detected "no off-site releases of contamination".

The town outside the laboratory in the state of New Mexico was evacuated on Monday as the fire raged nearby.

Officials said the nuclear facilities faced "no immediate threat" but warned of damage to houses.

The lab, opened during World War II, led the development of the atomic bomb.
Possible toxic plume

By midday on Tuesday, the Las Conchas fire had grown to 93 sq miles (241 sq km), burning through forests, canyons, and mesas, fuelled by dry timber and powered by strong winds.

The blaze was said to be as close as 50ft (15m) away from the grounds of the lab on Tuesday afternoon, raising fears it could reach a cache of 30,000 drums, each containing 55 gallons (208 litres) of plutonium-contaminated waste.

The fire had reached the lab's southwestern boundary and leapt a state road onto the land, burning roughly an acre, state fire officials said.

"The concern is that these drums will get so hot that they'll burst," Joni Arends, executive director of the Concerned Citizens for Nuclear Safety, told the Associated Press news agency.

"That would put this toxic material into the plume," she added.

But officials said there was very little risk of the fire actually reaching the lab's facilities and that workers were standing near the waste drums to coat them with fire-resistant foam if the blaze got too close.

Authorities said the fire could triple in size in the coming days, the Albuquerque Journal reported.

The fire blew enormous plumes of black smoke over the town of Los Alamos and forced the evacuation of the entire community, which has a population of roughly 12,000.

"We are throwing absolutely everything at this that we got," Democratic Senator Tom Udall of New Mexico said.

The south-western US has been stricken by giant wildfires this year, with millions of acres scorched in New Mexico, Arizona and Texas.

To the west of New Mexico, the largest wildfire in the history of the state of Arizona has been burning for nearly a month. - BBC

Recent Crop Formations Worldwide

Two extraordinary 2011 crop formations have been reported in the town of Poirino, Italy, on June 13 and 20, 2011. Poirino is a town in the Province of Turin in the Italian Piedmont region located about 12 miles (20 km) southeast of Turin (Torino) where the famous Christ Shroud is kept.

There have been several odd crop formations recently in the Netherlands including the one above from April 24, 2011 near Bosschenhoofd (the "Woodenhead" area), Holland

The number of crop formations appearing in Russia has also increased including the image from Stavropol, Novoaleksandrovsk on May 30, 2011

The crop formation season has been activate in the United Kingdom. A few weeks ago this snake-shaped formation was discovered in Wilton Windmill, near Wilton, Wiltshire

Readers Respond to Alien Abduction, Skinwalkers and Shadow People

I received the following emails in response to recent posts:

Hey Lon - I just read your article on 'Skinwalkers'.

My mom died in May of 1988 but talked many times about a certain occurrence that happened to her when I was 7, which would have been 1970. In all the places we lived we had ghosts or whatever you choose to call them, and when you grow up in that - it's just normal - as odd as that might sound.

Anyhow, my mom was VERY physic and about this time (1970) she started hanging out with a lot of witches and a lot of criminals. Not that the 2 are related. Just to let you know, my brother and I had a very interesting childhood. My brother is 3-4 yrs older than me - depending on who had the last birthday and he and my mom were very close. Well, she and my brother Terry would play a lot of mental telepathy games in his room in the basement. If she was around, she would just focus on him and they'd go down to his room and do these mind games. Like what color, number, whatever am I thinking of. Stuff like that.

Anyhow, we lived in South Minneapolis at the time and it was sometime in 1970. They had been downstairs doing their thing and they came up freaked out. What my mom told me was that when they were doing their mind thing it felt like she was being pulled backwards out of her body. It was like her spirit was being drawn towards the basement window. It was one of those really small narrow ones that no one could ever fit through. She had been facing Terry and as she was being pulled, she could see Terry's (my brother) face. She said he looked terrified as he was looking at her.

She told me she fought with everything she had to get back into her body and was finally able to do so. When she got back into her body she asked Terry what happened. He told her that she started turning into a giant black cat. They both came up and told me what happened and then again many times over the years. The story never changed and I never doubted it. One thing I should say also is she always said she wanted to be a big black cat. Like a black panther. I don't know how it happened but I believe it to this day.

Then around 1979 or 1980 my mom and I lived in N.E. Minneapolis and one of her friends came over. This was a man called Moe. I don't know if that was his real name or a nickname but I remember he was super cool and belonged to Wicca and was something of a high priest. My mom always said they were the good witches and he performed exorcisms. She had a couple friends who did but Moe was the nicest. Well, she was in the tub when Moe came over so we were sitting at the kitchen table. I have ALWAYS been afraid of werewolves so thought I'd ask him about them - knowing that he would tell me they were just made up. That wasn't what he told me. He paused and said "I can't tell you if there are or aren't werewolves. I have read about werewolves being in the hills in Russia but I don't know. I DO know a woman who can turn herself into a cat though."

Well, the cat thing I really wasn't thinking too much about because I was now concentrating on the werewolf issue. My mom and I were not close and it's weird because we never had a 'normal' family and didn't talk about what most people do I guess but later it dawned on me that (what I have come to believe at any rate) is that that was Moe's way of telling me about my mom. Perhaps she was finally able to learn and harness the energy it took to make the change. She wasn't home much but spent a great deal of time with her witch friends so who knows? Anyhow, I value Moe's input and I know from Terry and my mom both that at least that one time she was indeed turning from a human physical form into a giant cat. How this is possible I cannot fathom or comprehend but I believe it because the story from 1970 to when she died in 1988 NEVER ONCE CHANGED.

For what it's worth - I thought I would share. Take it easy and the best wishes to you and yours - Liz

Lon, my heart goes out to this woman (in Twenty-Three Years Of Constant Fear ). However, if her father was having similar problems, that could be a factor in her own issues, whether actual encounters or imagined. I don't say "imagined" as if I assume they both had a mental deficiency or disease. Perhaps they both are sensitive to magnetic or other energies, which can trigger an abduction scenario in sensitive individuals. (Scientifically proven.) I can't help but wonder if any of her psychiatric help discussed this possibility with her, and if it helped relieve her anxiety or not. The disappearance of her father, who strongly believed he was being abducted, is a powerful trauma on its own, even if she did not have the experiences she reported.

There are some things that bothered me about the story. Like the friend and her going through something, but not having talked about it at all. That could have been because she "flipped out" having an experience in her mind, and perhaps in her panic, convincing her friend something was going on as well. The friend, being a supportive, true friend, has stuck by her through the years, but perhaps can't tell her she was flipping out, or scared her to death.

You know I have had my share of odd experiences and encounters, and am not certain if they were real or not, or the result of being sensitive to various energies, such as microwaves and electric towers, and not wanting to know for sure at times, because I didn't want to deal with the reality if such horrific scenarios were real. So, I can empathize with the woman who wrote to you.

The only advice I can give, completely in confidence, without revealing my identity, is this woman might feel better if she were able to focus on the fact that she is a survivor. She has had no lasting physical affects that she is aware of, and she needs to concern herself with what she has control over: trying to heal from the emotional impact of these traumatic events in her life, and preparing herself mentally on how to deal with any future encounters. If and when another situation begins to happen, she could respond as many have, do all in her power to convince herself she is dreaming. That she is having a panic attack in her dream, and try to breathe deeply and calm herself, that she will awaken in the morning and be OK. Even if her clothes are inside out or missing, she can assess that she is OK in the morning, all in one piece and not hurt, and focus on that part of the resolution of the experience.

I would also recommend that, for the confidence, clarity and reassurance it brings, she pray for protection, for peace, for wisdom to know how to respond and react and reason the best for her own health and safety.

I hope in some way what I have said will be of help to her, as it has to me.

Hello, I read your blog every day and am a fan on Facebook so I finally decided to email an experience in.

Over a period of around seven years while I was growing up two figures regularly appeared to me at night (sometimes each night of the week, sometimes only appearing once or twice a week) they would appear just outside and just inside of my bedroom doorway, and they never tried to move any closer into the room. They would appear while I lay in bed. One figure appeared to be male, the other female. They were perfect silhouettes with no features to speak of. However, they appeared to be made of something similar to static on a television. They were brightly coloured, as if made of tiny blue pink and green dots of static. Sometimes they stood still and watched me and others they moved quickly and fluently around the area they were standing in. Although a small part of me told myself I should probably feel frightened, I never felt threatened by the figures and I never fell asleep as calmly as when they had appeared. Sometimes I would lose focus of them for a second but they would always reappear a few seconds later. As I grew up I stopped seeing the figures (Probably at about age 11.)

They often appeared to notice me, and in all honesty I got the constant feeling that they were there for me (partly because no one else noticed them, partly because they appeared to me so regularly.)

I've had many different experiences with the paranormal since then, having grown up with a passionate interest, but I have never seen anything remotely like these figures since they stopped appearing to me, and I have never really come across anything that could explain it, either.

While it may sound like the overactive imagination of a child, the fact that I saw them regularly over a period of six years and the fact that some of my very earliest memories are of these figures (I have earlier memories of these figures than I do of my family) leads me to believe otherwise.

I would greatly appreciate any info or any similar experiences you have heard about, although it doesn't seem important when compared to some of the things you are emailed with I've been trying for a long time to find something out about what they were.

Thank you very much for your time
Bernice

Fortean / Alternative News: Cemetery of Giants Found, London UFOs and Freakish Fires Terrorize Family

Cemetery of giant creatures found in Central Africa

A team of anthropologists found a mysterious burial in the jungle near the city of Kigali Rwanda (Central Africa).

The remains belong to gigantic creatures that bear little resemblance to humans. Head of research group believes that they could be visitors from another planet who died as a result of a catastrophe.

According to the scientists, they were buried at least 500 years ago. At first, researchers thought that they came across the remains of ancient settlements, but no signs of human life have been found nearby.

The 40 communal graves had approximately 200 bodies in them, all perfectly preserved. The creatures were tall - approximately 7 feet. Their heads were disproportionately large and they had no mouth, nose or eyes.

The anthropologists believe that the creatures were members of an alien landing, possibly destroyed by some terrestrial virus to which they had no immunity. However, no traces of the landing of the spacecraft or its fragments were discovered.

This is not the first such finding. In the summer of 1937 a group of Chinese scientists led by Professor Chi Putei surveyed the caves of Mount Bayan-Kara-Ula. Inside they found skeletons with excessively large heads and puny bodies. Nearby there were 176 stone plates. In the center of each plate there was a hole from which a spiral groove spread out to the perimeter with some characters on it.

In addition, the cave walls were covered with pictures of the rising sun, moon and stars, with many painted dots or small items, slowly approaching the mountains and the earth's surface.

Experts in deciphering ancient written characters have been puzzled over the disclosure of the secret spirals from the cave Bayan-Kara-Ula for two decades. Finally, the professor of Beijing University Zum Umniu deciphered several inscriptions.

The grooved letters narrated that approximately 12 thousand years ago some flying objects crashed in these mountains. Chinese archaeologists found a mention of the peoples who lived in the mountainous caves of Bayan-Kara-Ula.

A corpse of another "alien" was found by Turkish cavers. A mummy of the ice age was resting in a sarcophagus made of crystalline material. The height of the humanoid male creature did not exceed 1 meter 20 centimeters, his skin was light green, and he had large transparent wings on his sides.

According to the researchers, in spite of the unusual appearance the creature looked more like a person rather than an animal. His nose, lips, ears, hands, feet, nails, were very similar to human. Only his eyes were very different, three times bigger than those of a human, and colorless, like reptile's eyes.

Not that long ago in one of the ancient Egyptian tombs a mummy of a man 2.5 meters tall was found. It had no nose or ears, and its mouth was very wide and had no tongue.

According to archaeologist Gaston de Villars, the age of the Mummy is approximately 4 thousand years. It was buried as an Egyptian nobleman - carefully mummified and surrounded by servants, food and art objects designed for the afterlife. However, as it was discovered, not all objects around the finding belong to the Egyptian or even Earth's culture. For example, among the finds was a round polished metal disk covered with strange characters, a costume made of metal with the remnants of something resembling plastic shoes, and many stone tablets filled with images of stars, planets and strange machines. The Shrine where a strange mummy was found also looks unusual. The burial was made of the material unknown in antiquity. The stone was literally carved from the rock so that the walls were smooth, like polished marble. It looked as if it was cut by a laser. Incidentally, the stone's surface was fused. The tomb was decorated with a substance resembling lead.

However, the "alien" theory is not the only one. According to some researchers, the "giants" and "dwarfs" could be a mere side branch of humanity that once lived on Earth, but for some reason became extinct. - archaeologydaily

Freakish fires terrorize family

Mysterious fires that apparently ignite spontaneously have over the past two weeks destroyed the homes and belongings of a family in Hopewell near Thornville.

The freakish fires have burned through the Mthembu family’s main house, two low-cost houses in the yard and another low-cost house belonging to the children, across the street from the main family home.

The charred remains of some of their possessions - beds, sound system speakers, plastic and steel wash basins, food and clothes - lay in the yard on Sunday.

The steel basins had melted.

The remaining furniture that the family managed to pull out of the fire was strewn across the lawn as they kept watch over it.

Neighhbours, fire-fighters and managers from the Richmond municipality and uMgungundlovu district disaster management teams agreed that this was the first fire of its kind they have witnessed.

They said they had seen the fire start spontaneously and burn through things that had been pulled from the house.

Mashoba Mthembu, the owner of the house, said at least 13 family members are squatting together in one room because they have nowhere else to sleep and that the children are fearful of sleeping in the main house.

Started on bed

She said that the fires started almost two weeks ago on her bed.

“It first burned through my bed and it burnt it halfway.

In that bed there was about R3?000 that had been paid a few weeks earlier for my daughter’s ilobola, and it also burnt,” Mthembu added.

She said that after her bed was burnt, the fire raged through each of the bedrooms, consuming mattresses first and then the whole rooms.

So far it has burned about four bedrooms in the main house.

"At first we thought that it was children who were just playing with fire and accidentally caused it, but the matter came to a head on yesterday (Sunday) when the fire became uncontrollable.

"It burned through everything. If you put it out here, it will start somewhere else.”

She said the fire had also burnt her daughter's house, which is across the street.

Ward councillor Bonginkosi Shange said that even the fire-fighters who had been called to the scene, were puzzled.

“One female fire-fighter just about wet herself when the fire started right in front of her eyes and said she had never seen anything like this. Just this morning we have put out at least three different fires,” he said.

Joe Nzimande, a community leader said, “The problem is that no other community members want to accommodate the family because they think this fire will follow them there.”

Musa Ndlovu, of the Richmond municipality disaster management team, said the team has organised counselling for the family.

He added, “This family has been heavily traumatised.

"This kind of fire is not a normal fire. It is something that we have never seen before.” - news24

Russian scientists expect to meet aliens by 2031

Russian scientists expect humanity to encounter alien civilizations within the next two decades, a top Russian astronomer predicted on Monday.

“The genesis of life is as inevitable as the formation of atoms... Life exists on other planets and we will find it within 20 years,” Andrei Finkelstein, director of the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Applied Astronomy Institute, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying.

Speaking at an international forum dedicated to the search for extraterrestrial life, Finkelstein said 10 percent of the known planets circling suns in the galaxy resemble Earth.

If water can be found there, then so can life, he said, adding that aliens would most likely resemble humans with two arms, two legs and a head.

“They may have different colour skin, but even we have that,” he said.

Finkelstein’s institute runs a program launched in the 1960s at the height of the Cold War space race to watch for and beam out radio signals to outer space.

“The whole time we have been searching for extraterrestrial civilizations, we have mainly been waiting for messages from space and not the other way,” he said. - torontosun

UFOs Over London: HOAX!?

The film is very convincing as the cameraman walks down the street, filming as people look up at the skies, and then several UFOs fly around, with the final shot shows a glowing disc flying around. The fact that so many people are looking up at the skies rather than just a fixed shot on the sky was promising, but now, Stan Hernandez, a man that witnessed the Roswell alien crash, has come forward after conducting his investigation. He has called this UFO a “hoax.”

"Hoax for sure. I have seen aliens. I have seen UFOs. I have seen Army men that are mean and scare me, forcing me to buy new dungarees, but I know a fake when I see it, but that didn’t stop me from going to London to investigate. Guess what! The creators of this video are actually linked to a special effects company and this is a mere publicity stunt to get attention. How dare they! How dare they take a dump on the true UFO seekers out there. Ignore this one people. It’s a hoax." - ringsidereport

Acoustic cloak to hide ships from sonar

A new design for sound cloaking brings us one step closer to hiding ships from sonar and designing new kinds of concert halls.

The new sound shield is made of a stack of plastic sheets that have an intricate pattern of holes poked through them. When sound waves encounter the structure, they get re-routed in a specific path through the maze of holes and plastic plates. The result: instead of bouncing off the structure, as they would if they encountered any other obstacle, the waves keep on keepin' on, as if the device and the object under it were never there.

Because of this behavior, anything that hid under this device would go undetected by traditional sonar.

"Invisibility cloaks" have been in the news since 2006, when scientists proposed that they could design synthetic materials that would bend light in ways that made the objects under them appear invisible. Three years ago, Steve Cummer at Duke University figured out that the same principle could be applied to sound waves, and his lab has now brought out their first physical proof of the idea.

"Fundamentally, in terms of hiding objects, it's the same — how anything is sensed is with some kind of wave and you either hear or see the effect of it," Cummer told BBC News. "But when it comes to building the materials, things are very different between acoustics and electromagnetics."

The first-ever sound cloak, inspired by Cummer's 2008 proposal, was built at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, in January this year. That design works for inaudible ultrasound frequencies that are traveling under water. But Cummer's new device works for sounds that are traveling in air, in the frequency range between one and four kilohertz. (This corresponds to the last two octaves on the high end of the piano, BBC News explains.)

In addition to shielding ships from sonar, the new structure could be used to coat walls and soundproof rooms. With some fine-tuning to the design, the device could also be used to enhance the acoustics of concert halls. - msnbc
