Shag Harbour: Canada's Roswell

It was a little after 11 p.m., on the night of October 4, 1967, when an unknown object with four bright lights flashing in sequence and estimated at 60 feet in diameter, was observed hovering over the ocean near the small fishing village of Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia.

Several residents of the village first noticed a rather strange grouping of orange lights. Several eyewitness accounts indicate that there were four orange lights that evening. Five of these witnesses included a group of teenagers who watched these lights flash in sequence for several minutes, and then suddenly and rapidly dive in a sharp 45 degree angle toward the water's surface.

To the amazement of the teens, and other eyewitnesses, on hitting the water’s surface the lights did not immediately disappear beneath the gentle swells, but seemed to float on the surface, approximately one-half mile from the shore. The initial panicked reaction of the observers was that they were witnessing the emergency ditching or crash of an airplane. The first report phoned into the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) in Barrington, came from a young fisherman who told them that an airliner had gone into the bay. The first reaction by the police dispatcher was that the young man had been drinking, however after an immediate rash of 10 additional calls reporting the incident, the police quickly re-contacted the young fisherman for location details.

Within the same time period however, Constable Ron Pound of the RCMP was on patrol on Highway 3, heading toward Shag Harbor, and had been observing the strange lights as he increased his speed toward the incident. Constable Pound’s report was that he believed that the four lights were coming from a single aircraft, that he estimated to be about 60 feet long.

As Constable Pound reached the shoreline he was joined by two other officers, Police Corporal Victor Werbieki, and Constable Ron O'Brien. Additionally, several of the fishing village’s residents stood on the shore watching and questioning what to do next. According to Constable Pound and the other officers, the orange lights slowly changed to yellow, and the object appeared to move slowly across the surface of the water, leaving a yellowish foam in it's wake. By this time no fewer than 30 witnesses from various vantage points, watched as the object slowly drifted further from shore, all would later describe the object as about 60 feet long, 10 or so feet high and dome shaped.

After about five minutes, the object started to sink beneath the icy North Atlantic waves. A few of the eyewitnesses reported hearing a "whooshing" noise. While the RCMP had already been in communication with the Canadian Cost Guard and Cutter 101 was on the way, two of the RCMP officers and a few local fisherman hurriedly launched their boats to speed to the rescue of any survivors. As the small boats, and Cutter 101 reached the location, the lights were no longer visible but they found themselves sailing through a thick yellow foam, that indicated that something had submerged. (The fisherman report that the foam was not sea foam, and looked like nothing they had ever seen. In fact most were unnerved by the fact that they had to sail through it to look for survivors.)

After several hours of searching nothing was found and the search was called off at approximately 3:00 am. Both the NORAD and the Rescue Coordination Center in Halifax had been contacted by the RCMP and found that there had been no reports that evening of missing aircraft, either civilian or military.

On October 5th (the following day), the Rescue Coordination Center filed a report with the Canadian Forces Headquarters in Ottawa. This report stated that something had crashed into the water in Shag Harbor, but the object was of "unknown origin." The Canadian Forces Headquarters dispatched the HMCS Granby to Shag Harbor crash site, and using advanced detection equipment and specially trained divers from the Navy and the RCMP, the Canadian military systematically searched the sea floor for several days, and found nothing.

Here in 1967, the mystery ended with no physical evidence ever recovered, and no additional leads.

For a few years the story kicked around in the local papers. From time-to-time various theories and intriguing rumors emerged about Russian spacecraft, or Russian submarines, and an American follow-up investigation. Then the story simply faded into obscurity.

That is, until 1993 when the Shag Harbor incident once again was brought to the attention of the public.

This was due to the dedicated investigative efforts of two men who are *MUFON investigators. Chris Styles, assisted by Doug Ledger, using public records such as newspaper clippings, and police reports were able to track down and interview many of the eyewitnesses and individuals involved in the Shag Harbor sighting, the rescue attempt, and in the subsequent investigation. Through their work, some extremely compelling clues and amazing new insights were uncovered.

In interviews with divers, and crew members from the HMCS Granby they discovered some startling information. The object that dove into the waters off of Shag Harbor had been tracked, and it had actually traveled underwater for a distance of about 25 miles to a place called Government Point. In the 1960’s the U.S. had maintained a small but technically advanced military base at Government Point, managing a Magnetic Anomaly Detection system (MAD grid) for the purpose of detecting and tracking submarines in the North Atlantic using .

The U.S. military had most definitely detected the object on its sensitive tracking equipment. Naval vessels were dispatched and positioned over the unidentified object, where it had stopped. After 3 days of no movement, and not knowing exactly what it was, the military was planning to initiate an investigative salvage operation. As the Navy waited and planned, the detection equipment picked up another object moving in, and to the amazement of all those involved, joined the first object on the ocean floor. The speculation at the time, was that the second UFO (I guess officially now an Underwater Flying Object) was there to render aid to the first object.

Not fully comprehending what they were dealing with the Navy decided it was best to standby and observe. For nearly a week the Navy vessels held their position over the UFOs. The detection base however, located a Russian submarine that had entered Canadian waters to the north, so several of the vessels had to be pulled off target to sail north to investigate. Under the cover of this new activity on the surface, both UFOs made their move, accelerating underwater toward the Gulf of Maine. The remaining Navy vessels pursued them toward the United States, but the objects continued to distance themselves from their trackers. To the astonishment of the pursuers, both of the objects broke to the surface and shot skyward to vanish within seconds.

According to the researchers, while these observations were well corroborated by many credible eye witnesses, these accounts were given "Off the Record" by military, ex-military, and civilian personnel who fear harassment, ridicule, or loss of pension. So as the saying goes, "only the names have been changed to protect the innocent."

Clearly, a series of very extraordinary, and still unexplained UFO encounters, involving the navies of two countries and NORAD, occurred at Shag Harbor on October 4th 1967, and in the following week in the deep waters off of the cost of Maine. - MUFON Canada

Shag Harbour Incident

The crash was originally phoned into the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Detachment in Barrington Passage Nova Scotia by a young fisherman, as a possible airliner impacting the surface of the waters adjacent to Shag Harbour, a small fishing village some 130 miles southwest of Halifax on the Atlantic Ocean.

The report was at first greeted with an accusation that the caller had been drinking but caller was soon re-contacted (at a payphone no less) when others began calling in with a like account of an airplane crashing into the waters of the "Sound" by Shag Harbour. (Some 10 people reported the decsent of an aircraft into the water) 3 RCMP arrived on scene, all of which are principles, still living and have been interviewed.

Object was described as being ~60 feet long showing 4 lights while still airbourne and decending at a 45 degree angle. Viewed by witnesses (at least 20) from about 280 degrees of circle. On the water it was flat dome shaped. ALL PHONE IN REPORTS OF IMPACT WERE OF SMALL AIRLINER OR LIGHT AIRPLANE. AUTHORITIES CLASSED OBJECT AS UFO.

Dozens of people arrived at vantage point and watched lighted object drifting with the ebbtide. Object remained on surface for about five minutes then sank or submerged. Reports of wooshing sounds were reported. Attempts were made by local fishermen and 2 of the Mounties to get to the scene to offer assistance and look for survivors. Found only a patch of thick foam similar to shaving cream, only yellow in colour and glittery in nature. The patch was eighty feet wide by 1/2 mile long. Fishermen/searchers swear that this was not sea foam were spooked by it and did not like sailing through the stuff though they had no choice since this was the area where the craft went down.

Also encountered bubbles coming to the surface and expressed concerns about bouyancy.Nothing was found that evening an since federal and military agencies reported no missing aircraft the RCMP tagged the object as a UFO in a report filed to the Air Desk in Ottawa early the next morning.

Royal Canadian Navy and RCMP divers were brought in on the morning of the 6th to attempt to recover wreckage but were unsuccessful. Local and regional press and television arrived and filmed part of the search which was within a 1/2 mile of shore. In the meantime the event was given a great deal of coverage by the press including banner headlines in the Halifax daily newspaper the Chronicle Herald-Mail Star.

The evening of Oct4/67 were rife with UFO reports all over eastern Canada, one very strange event reported by Air Canada pilot and 1st officer. Radar targets by offshore trawler. There was a report of an object reported by another Mountie and three game wardens (they were staked out in the forest trying to capture some deer jackers) thirty miles north of Shag Harbour same time, believed to be the same one reported in the fishing village.

They were astute enough to take a compass bearing on the object that proved to be on a direct heading for the fishing village. A time lapse photograph (slide-Ectachrome-64) was taken of an object bearing in that direction by a professional photographer which we have obtained copies of but cannot be sure this would be the same object due to distance from sighting. Slide also shows star smears from time lapse while object(s) stay rock solid.

What began as an interesting story (the 'trapping" of an object 80-100 feet down being serviced by another object) by seven naval vessels off Government Point, Shelburne (also the site of a sub listening station and Magnetic Anomaly Detection -MAD grid) has expanded to include the muting of military witnesses, most of whom have not been in the forces for 15 or 20 years, refusal of Canadian Coast Guard documents and the tampering with of same, and local witnesses who offer evidence of this event while being questioned on another. - Don Ledger - "Dark Object"

Rumble Mystery Continues To Aggravate Residents

Click for video - The Windsor Rumble is Real

A mysterious rattling and humming that has shaken people living in southwest Windsor is spreading and getting worse, but authorities are still baffled about its source.

“In one house, we put a glass of water on the floor and you could see the ripples,” city Councillor Al Maghnieh told the Star on Thursday. “You could put your hand on the siding outside the house and feel the vibration.”

From a few complaints in February, Maghnieh has now heard from 1,000 people in his ward in the south and west of the city — including his own neighbours on Everts Ave. The worst time for the rumblings is between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m.

“These are not people looking for attention. They’re reporting sleepless nights.”

The provincial Ministry of the Environment investigated in April and found no “industrial” causes. That would include the prime suspect, a vast web of active and abandoned salt mines that stretch under Windsor and across the Detroit River to subterranean Detroit.

The Detroit Salt Co. still operates mines 360 metres below the city, supported by a 160-kilometre network of roads.

The Canadian Salt Co. Ltd., now owned by Morton Salt in Chicago, works the Ojibway salt mine and an evaporation plant in Windsor.

Blasting, officials said, is confined to weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Detroit Salt’s George Davis said that, unlike the Ojibway mine, the Detroit miners no longer use drilling and blasting and their second shift ends by early evening.

People in Detroit have reported similar unexplained shaking and humming, Kate Jordan of the Ministry of the Environment said Thursday.

“We want to find the source of the vibrations,” she said. “We’re working with other provincial agencies and our counterparts in Michigan. We haven’t found any evidence in Ontario.”

The Ministry of the Environment ruled out the salt mines on the Ontario side because “their operations are not coinciding with the times people are feeling these” vibrations, Teri Gilbert, issues project co-ordinator for the Windsor office, told the Windsor Star in the spring.

Wind turbines also have been struck off the list, said Earthquakes Canada’s Allison Bent, because they’re in a rural area outside of town. These unexplained sounds and shaking are concentrated in west Windsor.

Earthquake Canada sunk five ultra-sensitive seismic monitors around the city in June and seismologists are just getting the data back now for analysis.

“Enough people have heard it that is has to be something,” said Bent, a seismologist. “It can last on and off for hours.”

The shaking “is definitely not” an earthquake, she said. They would have picked that up even before June.

The federal monitors, however, will only pick up underground disturbances. If it’s above ground, she said, they might not.

Maghnieh speculated that construction of a major roadway linking Highway 401 directly with U.S. Interstate 75 and creating a new border crossing could be the source or the heavy industry operating on Zug Island, a heavily industrialized area south of Detroit.

“It’s like a low bass note, like a synthesizer,” he said. “The reports have really spiked recently. This is a very serious matter and we don’t know the health effects from it.”

Toronto architect Scott Weir, who grew up in a south Windsor salt-mining family and has a contract with Windsor for restoration work, believed a combination of effects is responsible. “The salt mines. And at that end of town, there is a lot of reclaimed land and a lot of quicksand in LaSalle. My sense is there are tunnels that go for miles. And everything in Windsor goes 24 hours a day.”

He was dubious about Zug Island, south of Detroit and across the river from Ojibway. “You can see what’s going on there.” - thestar

For months, residents of south and west Windsor have been wondering and worrying about vibrations of unknown origin.

And now, those mysterious rumblings under the city have found a new believer — the city's Ward 10 Coun. Al Maghnieh, who says it's time to start taking the phenomenon seriously.

"It's very present and real," he said.

Maghnieh added that those who think the phenomenon is a joke or that its proponents are "crazy" need to grasp the implications in terms of health and the environment.

"I mean, it's actually scary to think that this is going on and we still can't pinpoint what it is," he said.

"This is potentially very dangerous."

Maghnieh said he first started receiving calls from concerned citizens back in March.

But it wasn't until the early hours of Friday morning — when he'd arranged to visit the homes of rumble witnesses — that he experienced the sensation himself.

"It's a very sharp, consistent rumble sound," Maghnieh said. "Sometimes it's like a hum."

The city councillor said that at one point, he put a half-full water bottle on the ground and could see the vibrations causing ripples on the water's surface.

At another point, he could hear the aluminum siding of a house rattle due to the vibrations.

"It was very obvious. It was very evident," Maghnieh said. "It sent shivers up my spine."

Maghnieh said he's so far received about two dozen calls and a half-dozen emails from different people in his ward with complaints about the rumble.

When he followed up on some of the recent reports, two homeowners agreed to let him on their properties and investigate.

The time period between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m. was chosen because that's when the vibrations are reportedly the most distinct.

"I don't know if it's stronger then or not. Maybe it's just because it's quieter outside," Maghnieh said.

Although the Ministry of the Environment has studied the matter and has ruled out industrial sources, Maghnieh said there needs to be further and fuller investigation.

"You can't have hundreds of people just imagining these things," Maghnieh said. "We need resources. We need co-operation. We need somebody assigned to this."

Now Maghnieh is preparing a map of his ward to track the location of the rumblings, with radii indicating where the rumblings have been the strongest.

It might not be long until the issue hits Maghnieh even closer to home: He recently finalized purchase of a house on Everts Avenue, and some of the rumbling reports he's received are from fellow Everts Avenue residents.

"On my own street," Maghnieh exclaimed. "On my new driveway, my first day arriving at my home — three different residents from three different homes came to welcome me to the neighbourhood, and the first thing they said was: 'There are rumblings here. It's bad.'"

Maghnieh said he doesn't regret buying the house. "In fact, now I'm even more motivated to get to the bottom of this." - windsorstar

NOTE: there have been reports of this rumbling sound in southern Ontario and several areas in eastern Wisconsin and central Michigan. So what is it? Witnesses say that there is a 'synthetic' sound...like machinery. Is there a chance that construction taking place in another location is somehow resonating through the bedrock? Or maybe there is some nefarious activity taking place underground? What do you think? Lon

What was the Beast of Seven Chutes?

On June 1, 2005, a photo was taken of an unidentified species standing beside a waterfall in the Parc des Sept Chutes in Quebec, Canada. Amazingly, the creature appears to be holding something and is staring at the photographer, who doesn't notice it. This creature does not match the typical descriptions of the legendary Bigfoot, which is usually described a being a massive creature that resembles a human, having a conical head and a human-looking flat face. As well, the Bigfoot is not usually described as being aggressive.

The creature in the photo has several unique physical attributes that differentiates it from typical Bigfoot sightings. The creature is erect, standing on two legs and appears to be between 5-6 feet tall. It has an elongated snout that appears dog-like as well as silver hair on its head reaching to it's shoulders. The creature's body is black and the left arm is visible bent at the elbow. Quite remarkably, the creature looks to be holding a white dog.

Based on the red area that looks like blood on the creatures head, it may have been feeding on the dog. The creature has a triangular shaped head and, unlike most Bigfoot who retreat when seen, this creature is holding his ground and staring aggressively and directly at the photographer.

In August 2008, David Claerr wrote an article comparing the Beast of Seven Chutes and Dogman of Michigan:

In the forests of Northern Wisconsin, Michigan and East Central Canada, between about 42 to 48 degrees of Latitude, there have been a resurgence of reports of a large, bipedal carnivore, within the past several years. There is a notable resemblance in the descriptions to a being in the lore of native tribes: the Windigo, a tall, ferocious creature with a wolf-like head on the body of a man or bear. It also fits the descriptions from European legends of the werewolf.

The cryptic creature is reported to have unique characteristics that differ from the appearance of a Sasquatch or Bigfoot. Generally smaller and less stocky than a Sasquatch, it is said to be closer to the height of an average man, and the arms and legs are similar in proportion to the human. The hands or fore-paws are said to have long curving, sharp claws. The feet, judged by footprints, are said to be elongated somewhat like the human, but the toes are shorter and configured more like a canine. But the most striking feature, according to the accounts, is the elongated muzzle with large protruding canines and pointed incisors.

Accounts of sightings of the creature are often in conjunction with a fresh kill, usually a deer. Its demeanor is hostile and aggressive, according to reports. The non-human expression is said to be malevolent, and the glaring eyes and snarling grimace are said to provoke a deep sense of dread. The accompanying illustrations by the author are based on purported eyewitness accounts and a detail from a photo taken in a park near, Quebec Canada. "Seven Chutes" refers to the cataracts or waterfalls in the park, which is known by the the French name "Parc de Sept Chutes". In a small area of the larger, complete picture of a waterfall, a strange figure is facing the camera and looking up through the foliage on the embankment. Amazingly, it appears to be cradling a white poodle in its arms.

The hand-drawn digital illustrations by the author were derived by a visual study of an enlarged detail of the figure. Sophisticated filtering effects were employed to isolate color groups and enhance details of the structure and textural patterns. A compensation for motion-blur was added. The resulting rectified image, which revealed surprising detail, was used as a visual comparison for the illustrations. (To see the original unaltered picture and more information, refer to the link in the Resources section below.)

The crown of the creature's head has an irregular red coloration that has the appearance of a stain, perhaps blood. The rest of the hair or fur, which follows coherent patterns, is in shades of grey to white, darker at the base and lighter toward the tips. The head has a moderately long mane that appears to obscure the ears. The coat of hair on the arms, legs and body is somewhat uniform and comprised of stiff bristles about an inch and a half long, judging from proportions. The lower legs and feet in the image are obscured, so the illustrated configuration of them is conjectural. The "dog" it appears to hold is less distinct since it has more of a motion-blur, but still looks more like a dog than any other object or animal.

From studying the apparent bone structure, musculature, posture and hair-growth patterns it is a reasonable hypothesis that the creature, if real, would have characteristics most in common with the primate branch that includes macaques and baboons. Since the environment in the reports is the colder mid-northern regions, an analogous primate could be the Snow Monkeys (macaques) of Japan, which have a seasonal growth of hair that allows them to survive temperature extremes. Related primates, like baboons, also have enormous canine teeth and a head that can appear very dog- or wolf-like. The hind legs and feet of a baboon are also somewhat dog-like in appearance and function. These conjectures are worth considering if a bipedal, primarily carnivorous primate is postulated. Of course, most primates are omnivores or herbivores, but that does not preclude the possible existence of a carnivorous primate. An analogy to that premise would be the carnivorous marsupial "wolves" and "lions" formerly inhabiting Tasmania.

Reports of this type of cryptic biped in the Americas go back centuries before the arrival of Europeans. There have been sporadic reports since the days of New World settlements of this and perhaps related creatures by well known explorers and historical figures. Whether the phenomenon is real or imaginary, a greater understanding of this and other mysteries can be gained only through scientific investigation and comprehensive field research.

The person who took the photo lives in Quebec, about 15 minutes from where the photo was taken. He speaks French and works as a driver for a construction company and wishes to remain anonymous.

He was sightseeing alone at the Parc des Sept Chutes which is near Saint-Georges de Beauce, Quebec, it was about 90 degrees that day. He did not notice the subject or anything out of the ordinary while he was walking around the park taking pictures. The date was Wed. June 1st 2005 there were no other park visitors around. He took 76 photos (all at medium resolution) of various park features, he also recorded 4 videos. (The videos are available for anyone who wants to view them.) The camera was a Canon A70. He was looking through the photos at home that same day and was surprised to see the subject/creature standing in the woods looking up at him. The photo was number 32 in the set. He has since been back to this area 3 times and taken photos and videos on each occasion. He was back on Monday July 4th and was spooked when he heard something walking in the woods 20-30 feet away from him. He stated that he probably will not be going back there alone. In some of the later photos he took he had his girlfriend stand where the subject was and he stood where he initially was and took photos to get a sense of size and scale. - haveyouseenthiscreature.com

Ogopogo's Wake Witnessed Again

"The above photo was taken after the creature had submerged. But the wake it left behind was pretty impressive"- William J. Gibbons

Cryptomundo.com is reporting on a recent sighting of the infamous Ogopogo at Lake Okanagan in British Columbia. Sighting reports of this cryptid are usually met with a fair amount of skepticism...this sighting is no different. The report was made by William J. Gibbons and forwarded to Cryptomundo.com. Gibbons and his companions state that they witnessed Ogopogo on July 2nd, 2011 while cruising Lake Okanagan. A future video of the encounter is promised.

Go to the post and read the full report...then read the update. Gibbons was a bit disturbed by the Cryptomundo.com readers' comments and offered the following:

bgibbons responds:

@greg102- I am beginning to regret even sending this report in, because people like you obviously do not pay attention to what I actually wrote. Further, you were not there, so how can you pass judgement on this occurrence?

Let me explain again in simple language.

1. The water was flat calm.

2. There were no boats moving on the water in any direction that could have caused any kind of disturbance directly in front of us.

3. The disturbance occurred when a sudden upheaval of water happened immediately in front of our boat.

4. Being close to the object allowed me to observe the back of the animal protruding slightly above the waves that it caused, eliminating the cause as a mere boat wake or a line of energetic sturgeons, etc.

5. The head of the animal broke the surface only briefly.

6. We did not claim our observation as “evidence.” It was simply an observation, and of a large creature that briefly broke the surface and moved rapidly away from west to east before submerging about 10-12 seconds later.

7. To me, solid evidence constitutes physical remains or at least part of a specimen from which specific zoological data can be extracted. Only crystal clear film and photographic evidence of a cryptid is the next best thing but not conclusive.

Finally, do try to reserve your comments to subjects that you are actually knowledgeable in. Cryptozoology, however, does not appear to be one of them.

Mysterious Killer Canid Stalking Bowen Island, B.C.

Residents of a small community in British Columbia have a mysterious killer in their midst and are taking steps to protect their pets, farm animals and small children.

An animal thought to be part timber wolf has been stalking Bowen Island, just off the coast of Vancouver, for about six months -- preying mainly on dogs and cats.

"Anyone who has family, has pets, and anyone who has seen it, seen the way it looks at you, knows that it's dangerous to have around," said island resident Stacey Powers.

Her husband John recently caught the animal on video, and saw it snatch a gosling out of a nearby pond.

The animal has "shown no fear of coming up close to the house," he said, "and obviously you don't want to have a concern that he's there and all of a sudden the kids are in his range." The family is keeping its pets indoors and young children nearby.

A local veterinarian believes it is part dog, part wolf and that it may have been abandoned after being brought to the island.

"They are a mixed-up species. They are part domestic with the instincts of a wolf," said Dr. Alastair Wescott. "They don't react normally and so people can't manage them, and so dumping them is a common thing to do."

It is thought to be a young male weighing about 90 pounds.

Missing pet signs are posted all over the island. The animal has killed at least three dogs, more than a dozen cats and two sheep. Many deer carcasses have also been found.

The municipality has set up a hotline, bought a tranquilizer gun, and enlisted both Westcott and a professional trapper to find the animal.

Once caught, it is expected to be euthanized. Rescue organizations have been contacted, but the animal's behaviour has been so vicious they say there's no chance of rehabilitation. - ctv

Hunting the wolf-dog of Bowen Island

Since appearing on Bowen Island, B.C., in December, an animal believed to be a wolf-dog hybrid has killed five dogs, six sheep and “more cats than we even know” says Chris Buchanan, the island’s bylaw services supervisor. It has taken numerous geese, raided two chicken coops and littered the island with deer carcasses.

“He’s definitely getting more bold,” says Stacey Powers, a resident of this 50-square-kilometre island located 20 minutes by ferry from West Vancouver. “I definitely don’t let my dog out, or my cats, or my kids.”

The island’s only veterinarian, Alastair Westcott, mounted a private campaign to stop the animal, his $2,000 high-powered tranquilizer rifle purchased especially for the task. He is intimately acquainted with the animal carcasses strewn about the island by the creature, but is yet to spot the canine itself.

“It’s my nemesis,” he says.

This week, local authorities — who have advised Bowen Islanders to “take precautions when hiking, or when allowing small children or pets outdoors unattended” — called in a professional trapper. He arrives just as the animal has begun targeting sheep. The attacks have come at dawn, with the animal leaping into a pen and tearing the throat out of several lambs and ewes in a matter of minutes.

“When he kills the sheep, he doesn’t really eat them … it almost seems to be a game,” says Mr. Westcott.

Normally, wolf-plagued communities need only call up the B.C. Conservation Officer Service, which sends in a team to capture or kill the animal. However, after officers examined some grainy video images of the Bowen Island creature, they determined that the animal was an escaped wolf-dog hybrid – and thus out of their jurisdiction.

Private attempts to kill the creature have been hampered by an island-wide ban on firearms.

“As you can appreciate, Bowen Island is a bedroom community to the Greater Vancouver area … the province has determined this is a no-shooting area,” says Cpl. Don Southern with the Bowen Island RCMP.

Illegal or not, local gun-owners are keeping their rifles close at hand, says resident Ed Booiman. In January, Mr. Booiman was the first Bowen Islander to get a good look at the creature when he came upon it eating his pet Sheltie. “Everybody’s hoping that someone will take this animal down,” he says.

The island’s mailboxes, bulletin boards and trailhead signs are now plastered with posters instructing residents to report sightings to a dedicated “Hybrid Hotline.” When residents phone in the animal’s position to the hotline, Mr. Westcott attempts to head it off by taking up a position in one of seven hunting blinds he has set up around the island.

“Initially, I just went out for a couple hours every few days or so,” says Mr. Westcott. “Now, it’s three to four hours a day.”

Wolves are notoriously hard to hunt, especially in a thickly wooded island about half the size of Manhattan. The municipality of Bowen Island has left traps for the animal, but to no avail.

In February, a loose wolf-dog was shot and killed by a farmer on nearby Salt Spring Island after it killed more than a dozen of his lambs. After discovering lamb carcasses on his property, farmer Ted Akerman grabbed his 12-gauge shogun and spent the night staking out his flock from the cab of his pickup truck. He was able to kill the dog when it came back for his sheep in the morning.

“People come to the island with a dog they can’t handle and they leave it here,” says Mr. Akerman. “I’ve had ferry workers tell me about people coming over with a big dog, and when they come back they don’t have it.”

Although domestic wolves are illegal in B.C., residents are allowed to own wolf-dog hybrids.

“It’s one of the real messes of wolf biology that people want to breed them because they think it’s sexy to have a wolf – and then they get loose and disappear,” says Bob Hayes, former wolf biologist for the Yukon Territory. The B.C. SPCA has long taken a strong stance against ownership of wolf-dog hybrids. “Crossing a wolf and crossing a dog generally undoes 12,000 years of domestication,” says Robert Busch, general manager of operations for the B.C. SPCA. The animal may seem friendly and dog-like, but it can easily “snap” and revert to its wild state.

Mr. Westcott still suspects that the animal could be a common wolf. - nationalpost

UFO Encounters - CFB Gagetown NB / Additional Sightings

MUFON CMS - submitted 4/27/2011 - near Gagetown, New Brunswick, Canada - 6/1/1992 - unedited: I was in the US Army Reserves in the 1990's. One night, around June 1, 1992, while on my annual training exercise, I was in the woods, many miles from the nearest town, but amongst thousands of US & Canadian Army Reservists on a base called Gagetown, New Brunswick, Canada. I was dropped off a mile or two from camp, to guard an ammunition dump in a clearing of about 100 yards by 150-200 yards, surrounded by tall trees. The moon was full and the sky was clear.

At 11:20pm, I had the chilling sensation someone had snuck up on me and was standing next to me, looking at me. It sent a slight chill through me. I looked up to the right and there, about 100-or-so yards past the treeline, an enormous craft arose in the vicinity of a small lake/pond. I could see it plain as day and knew immediately it was an alien space craft.

It rose like a helicopter and flew slowly, like a helicopter, yet it was silent and lacked distinctive characteristics of both a helicopter and airplane, like a tailfin, wings, propellers, or safety lights.

In the bright moonlight, I could clearly see the entire craft, which was longer than a 747 or C-130, possibly oval or round, and tapered towards the tail. There were three sets of lights in a 120 degree arc around the front of the craft, which appeared to be windows, but may have been headlights.

I was paralyzed with fright and tried not to move, lest be seen. I slowly turned my head to watch the craft pass by. I watched it until it had gradually disappeared over the treeline.

After it had passed, I could hear the faint static-like sound of a jet-type engine, however the craft moved far too slowly to be a jet and the sound was barely audible, unlike a jet. There were no runways, where it took off - it had to come out of the lake or another clearing past the trees. Having seen many helicopters throughout my training, and ridden in them, I can say without equivocation this was no helicopter. With the bright moonlight, there is no doubt in my mind this was neither a commercial nor military craft known to the public, even now, nearly 20 years later.

Another soldier was on post about 1/4 mile away at another ammo dump. We had agreed beforehand to pick up our field phones at 11:30 to make sure we were both awake. Our exact conversation went: me,"Hey, you there?" him, "Yeah" me, "Did you see that?" him, "Thank God you said that!" We had both seen the same thing, described the same thing to each other, and agreed we had both seen an alien space craft.

This incident was never reported to the military because our fellow Reservists thought it was a joke we had both concocted and we eventually dropped it. But to this day, I shudder when I think of it.

I did report this on another website and was shocked to see the year after I posted it, a Canadian soldier posted an eerily similar account on the same night.

Oromocto, NB Triangle UFO

I wanted to share this amazing craft I seen in Oromocto, New Brunswick in the late 1990's Aug or Sept. I know the sketch is elementary but it is the best I could do with paint.

The craft was enormous in size like looking at a house hovering in the air. The color of the craft was a dark Grey metallic with smooth edges no sharp edges like my sketch. It had no sound. The triangular craft had windows all around like a normal Air craft but there was no living beings visible. It appeared to be scanning the area without lasers or fancy flash lighting. This was in the early part of the evening still day light after supper.

I ran in the house to get my companion to see this beautiful sight but he was hypnotized to the TV. I tried in vain but my companion would not budge like in a trance. I ran back outside and the craft was still there in the field hovering. I had a sense of calm while I watched it until it zipped off in a split second.

I then felt lonely as if my family just left after a holiday visit. I wanted it to come back.

I then spotted hovering above the Oromocto Lake at the boat docks. I jumped into my car to drive over to see it and before I arrived it zipped off again. This was the last time I seen it.

Oromocto seemed to be quiet while this was happening. I don't know if the town was asleep or having supper.

This is my story of UFOs and it has made me a believer. - UFOBC

Near Gagetown July 27th 2006

"We were driving north from Moncton to Fredericton. Just before getting to Gagetown I noticed something shining to my right, up in the air. It was approximately a couple thousand feet from us flying along the trans Canada highway. I said "what's that?" and two of my companions looked up, the front passenger saw it then it just zoomed at incredible speed and stopped around 20 miles away, we could still see very well then the third passenger see it. The characteristics that were most interesting is it was round (looked like an aspirin pill), shined like chrome and moved at incredible speed. I've seen jets move before and this was no jet, it would be going like Mach 7. When it was close by, if you calculate by distance at 2000 ft from us, it must have been like 200 ft in diameter.

As we watched it from a distance and the shine was still very intense (seemed just like the sun reflecting from the surface of this craft) it just moved again and we just lost it, it was way too fast to follow with our eyes. We just looked at each other and no other comment was made, this was no doubt a very odd experience." - PSICAN

Sitting in our kitchen talking at approx 2200hrs, my wife commented that she was looking at what she thought was a helecoptor over our house with what she thought was a spotlight (she could see it from her kitchen chair through our deck screen door. My brother stood up and had a look and commented that he thought it was weird that it made no noise. I have military experience with helecopters, para flairs and artillery flairs so I got up and stepped out on the deck to have a look (the rest were still in the house. At first I thought I was looking at a bright orange flair but then I noticed it was moving over our neighbourhood from West to East. We have a large military base and they fire artillery flairs to our south but their normally white and we can see them fall (not fly).

The object was semi-bright star shaped. It made no noise at all and definately wasn't a flair or aircraft (no red/green or white flashing lights). It flew towards CFB Gagetown and then stopped in the air. I yelled at my brother to come out and look and we watched it hover in the vicinity of the base for about 2 minutes and then it slowly started to fly again in a north east direction. We watched it fly out of sight and it never changed shape or added color (bright orange). When I checked my watch it was 2207hrs. My wife asked if it could be a meteor but i said no because it moved, then hovered, then moved again. It's speed wasn't fast but it was consistent (under mach 1). It seemed to waver left to right slightly and it made no noise at all. We have Bell 412 Choppers here flying all the time, some Sea Kings and EH 101s and you can hear them. This made no sound at all. - UFO Clearinghouse

May 4th 2007 : Oromocto, New Brunswick

UFOINFO Sighting Form Report
Location: Over Oromocto New Brunswick Canada
Date: May 4, 2007 at 1:05 am
Approach Direction: east to west
Departure Direction: east to west
Witness Direction: north
Description: Friday May 4, 2007

At about 1:05am I went out to the patio to have a cigarette. I live in Beaver Dam which is just outside Fredericton, NB. I was looking in the general direction of Oromocto from there. Just above the tree line I saw what at first glance I thought was just another plane. The longer I looked at it the more I realized that it was not a plane. The colored flashing of the lights were completely random. They had no pattern to them like a normal plane. The next thing I noticed was that it was barely moving. During the 10 minutes that it was visable it only moved slightly from my right to left. Then disappeared.

I called CFB Gagetown in the morning to see if they were doing any exercises or could explain the lights and they said there were no exercises and they had no planes or helicopters out.

Color/Shape: lights appeared to be blue red and white

Height & Speed: I would say it was 10 km in the distance so it is hard to gage. - UFOinfo

Boiestown area circled. CFB Gagetown and Oromocto areas squared

I am a young man from Boiestown, New Brunswick, Canada and have a remarkable story to tell and a newspaper article to present, starting with the story. It happened March 26th at night, the night after people were talking about a star outside that would flash three or four colors and appeared to be spinning, but I never heard of it until Saturday. "Its' still out there", a friend said as he pointed it out to me. It's appearance was very strange and after staring at it for a while I noticed it move a little. I pointed it out to my friend and he noticed it. Inside the house was about ten more people so we showed them. It hardly moved but you could still tell it was moving. We decided to travel towards the object into the woods. There isnt many houses around this one, it is a pretty secluded area. Anyway, we walked out and began noticing little star like objects moving all around here and there. Really strange movements. Zooming back and forth and doing circles. Looking towards the object we were previously looking at minutes before it moved all the way to near the horizon. Suddenly another appeared over the horizon about 90 degrees from the first. Then another. Not only was there these weird colorful moving orbs, but the objects that looked like stars would be still, then suddenly shoot at rediculous speeds for a distance and then stop again or do some strange maneuver. We stared all night and sunrise was nearing. One light came direcly above us and seemed to be lowering because the light was getting brighter. We then noticed two more dimmer lights on each side of it forming a triangle. Sunrise was starting to come and the stars were disapearing. All that was left in the sky was three ufos including the one directly above us. One by one they became hard to see and disapeared, the last one seen was the one atop us. We looked around in the daylight for hours in the middle of some field a ways away from houses. By now some had left and there was only five of us left there. We would notice a flash going but it would only last for a second. I looked up in the sky and noticed a dark cloud above us. The funny thing was this cloud was really small and never even covered the small field and the sky was blue all around it. It was the strangest thing we have ever seen. It was really dark and grayish right up top of us but was really blue all around us. Anyway, I got sick of looking for the flashes and left. I didnt tell anyone what I had seen for fear of being considered nuts. Later that day, about 3:00 I went back to the field. My friends were still there and with a story to tell. They told me to take a look now.. That same dark cloud got even darker and the sky around just as blue. (im really sure it wasnt a cloud but its the closest I can compare it to.) I looked and saw about four flashes in five seconds. This time you could follow them with your eye but when they went near the dark cloud, which is where they were coming from or going to, they would disappear or cloak or somthing. At certain points you couls literally see hundreds of these things. Anyway, two of my friends standing there said that when it was just them two, the cloud came right over top of their head. They said it started to pull them up and they took off running towards the house. Back at the house they laughed their asses off at them running and sreaming a cloud was after them and a ufo was trying to abduct them. Personally, I couldnt really believe them either fully because I wasnt there and it seemed so far fetched (except the fact I witnessed the cloud follow us when we walked somewhere). Anyway, back to the five of us standing there watching the sky and all the flashes. There was definately more activity now than the previous night. I would guess there was at least 200 of these things around. Suddenly I looked over and spotted five flying saucers and pointed them out. They were there, just as plain as day and they definately werent anything that most people have ever seen. Their movements were so fluid and precise, it was amazing. They started in a circular motion, then as a sixth one joined them, their motion turned into an up down motion (when one was up, the two beside it were down). Later another saucer, alone this time, crossed the sky. When we went back to the house, the two guys who said they almost were abducted faces' were bright orange. We thought it might have been sun burnt but it went away in two hours. That night we took more peple back there to prove it, and sure enough they started coming from all around, about ten of them. After they come so close they would disapear, probably the cloud was still there but it wasnt really visable at night. After we went back to the house my two friend's faces were bright orange again. Also they were saying their colors in their eyes were screwed up.

I believe we have caught some attention by having a large group staring and pointing in the sky all night long. I honestly never believed in aliens or anything of that matter until now. I would have no reason to post this message for any other sort of reason than to see if anyone knows anything about this.

Here is the odd part to the story. In New Brunswick's newspaper "The Daily Gleaner" for Tuesday, March 29th, second page it tells the story of a guy who caught UFOs on video tape in a place about an hour away from Boiestown the day before the rainbow star was first spotted. Its appearance was the same of the rainbow star that we seen and it had a picture in the paper. It turns out, many others in NB had seen these sightings. http://www.canadaeast.com/

Here is the story exactly as it is write, quote:

Mystery UFO over Lincoln on videotape

The mysterious fireball that lit up the New Brunswick sky last Wednsday was videotaped by Lincoln resident Yancy Munford.

"We've got it on tape and what a sight" he said Monday. "It is a complete ball.

"When you zoom in and zoom away you can see the fire. You can see the trail and the smoke behind it."

Munford and his fiance Veronica were driving home in Lincoln Wednsday evening around 8:30 p.m. when they saw somthing in the sky. He keeps his video camera in his van and he parked near the Ooromocto overpass and they taped what looked like a fireball for at least five minutes.

"This thing hovered for minutes and minutes," said Munford. "We sat there and filmed it."

The fireball was also in Moncton and Digby, N.S. (Nova Scotia) and scientists have specualted that it could be a meteor or peice of space junk burning up on re-entry.

"At first we thought it had to be a comet," said Munford.

Now he wonders if it is a new kind of flare being tested by the military. Flares are often seen floating over CFB Gagetown at night. But he said normal flares burn on the way up. But this object just appeared in the sky.

"I have never seen a flare like that," he said.

In the videotape, which he brought to the Daily Gleaner Monday evening, the object appears to be round and rotating and covering with red and orange fire. There is a definite texture to the object visable on the video.

Munford said he could not see any peices coming off it.

He also said there was more than just one of the objects in the sky.

"There were three of them," he said.

Munford said if anyone from the university of New Brunswick's astronomy department wanted to see his video they were welcome to do so.

Munford was not the only person who saw the fireball Wednsday evening.

Claude and Dianne Gallant of Oromocto also spotted the mysterious object as they were driving through Lincoln on the way home from Fredericton.

"we were driving and watching it," said Dianne Gallant. "I said it must be a plane with a big light because it was moving really slow."

At first it was about the size of an orange street light and then they too thought it might be a flare from CFB Gagetown. But she said her husband used to be in the military and he did not think it was a flare.

Eventually it got even bigger. She said it was the size of a full moon and it was obviously round and rotating and on fire.

"I said boy, it is pretty big," she said. "It wasn't moving as fast as we were because we were getting closer to it."

Claude Gallant said he has seen meteors before and this fireball was not streaking across the sky.

"It was kind of bizarre," he said. "To me it kind of looked like it was almost stationary."

So what was it?

"To tell you the truth I have no idea," he said. "I know it wasn't a plane."

"It was a really amazing sight."

The Gallants bumped into Yancy Munford when they stopped for coffee at the Tim Hortons in Oromocto where he was showing people his newly-shot videotape of the fireball.

Claude Gallant said he got a chance to look at the tape.

"When he zoomed in on it, it looked really strange," he said. "It looked like a round ball that was turning and on fire."

Dianne Gallant said it looked like a miniature sun.

"You could actually see fire around this round thing and it was turning," she said. "It was darker in spots." Endquote.

This described to me the near exact same thing we seen at first, just much larger because he was closer. It was also the same in describing how more began appearing. Would anyone have any explanations for these things?

Photo: UFO / Alien Gray Caught On Camera In New Brunswick, Canada

From Chris Holly on Tuesday, March 10, 2009:

We were recently contacted by a very interesting man who wanted us to look at a photo he took on his property located deep in the Canadian wilderness.

The man was on his usual inspection of his property when he came across this huge light mass hovering over the trees lining one of his fields. He told us it was a massive extremely bright light that lit up his entire field. Along the right side of the light stood what looked like a rectangle structure of some type that seemed to be hovering next to this huge light.

The man thought this was the strangest thing he had ever seen and luckily had his camera with him and took a picture of the lights and his field. The object was so strange looking the man became extremely fearful and immediately left the area after taking the photo.

This event has upset this man since the day it happened. He decided to send it to Ed Fleming of F.T.T.O.U.F.O to see if Ed could help him identify what this light and structure next to it could have been. Ed examined the photo with great care and noticed what appears to be a gray looking creature peeking from behind a tree towards the man while he stood next to his truck to take his photo. The man never noticed this creature at the time.

Ed also agreed with the man that it does appear to be two objects one being the massive light source and the other some type of light structure, it also appears the light structure not only has form but some type of base supporting it.

Ed analyzed the photo to the best of his ability and could not find any obvious attempt the photo had been tampered with. Ed also thought the source seemed to be a very cool energy source – not a hot energy source.

More disturbing is that the creature behind the tree seems to have some type or object or weapon to the right of him either in his hand or standing next to him .This object is also lit and aiming at the man who was taking his picture at the time. You can see that this object next to the creature seems to be casting a light on the tree behind it.

This ordeal has been extremely upsetting for this man and he would only release the photo to us with the promise we would not identify who he is or where his land is located. We always first and foremost protect those who come to us with information and have agreed to show his unique photo without disrupting his privacy.
