Ohio Bigfoot Encounter / Other Cryptid News

Unidentified flying objects, little green men, spirits of those who passed away and legends of haunted houses don't interest Marc DeWerth because he's never encountered any of them. What does interest Marc is Bigfoot, because he claims he's seen one and that it was right here in Ohio.

Marc is an Ohio Bigfoot Investigator and is affiliated with the Ohio Bigfoot Organization. Not nearly as elusive as Sasquatch, Marc made an appearance in Fostoria to speak at the Rotary Club about his "time-consuming hobby."

"Bigfoot is about being passionate about it," Marc said.

And he is. While he has had an interest in the creature since he was a teenager, his sighting came in 1997 while hunting for badger dens.

"I always said if I ever saw one, I'd walk right toward it, but if you saw what I saw..." Marc remembered.

Marc said the creature, covered in black fur, paced him as he was walking back to his vehicle. When he saw it, he tried to get a camcorder out to record it, but was unable to get as much evidence as he wanted. However, he did see the creature bump into a branch with its head.

Later, when he returned to the area with some friends, he found the branch by locating the markers he had left to indicate where he saw the creature. The branch was measured at 8 feet 11 inches off the ground.

Because of his background in zoology, Marc said he was interested in the creature for a variety of scientific reasons and decided to contact the Muskingum County Watershed District. To his surprise, the person he spoke with wasn't surprised about Marc's discovery. In fact, the representative claimed there had been numerous sightings in that area within the past 20 years of not only the black creature, but a red-furred one, as well. The reddish creature was assumed to have been a female, according to Marc, due to its smaller size.

"People are seeing stuff and it's stuff you can't explain," Marc said.

Whether a person catches a glimpse of something in a wooded area, sees something cross in front of their vehicle or sees something looking into their window, there is still very little physical evidence.

"Sometimes you start questioning yourself," Marc said.

Marc explained for all the calls and reports he hears, only about 10 percent of them are somewhat legitimate. He believes in Bigfoot without a doubt, but said the 90 percent of the reports that are hoaxes or jokes dilutes the genuine few reports.

While Marc saw the creature in southern Ohio, there has also been a report of a Bigfoot in Fostoria, near Van Buren Road. According to the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization's web site, a report came in to them from June 1993. Because of the dry weather, according to the report, wildlife came toward town to drink from either the creek or reservoirs.

"From what seemed to come from the creek and reservoirs area was an eerie cry that sounded like a sick cow. This cry so primal and terrifying it made the hair on the back of both of our necks stand strait[sic] up with fear. Instantly the birds were mostly quiet, their singing replaced by the sound of every dog with in a mile radius, barking wildly at the top of its lungs. My father, a veteran hunter of Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Ohio had never heard anything like this before in his life. We tried not to think about it and made sure all the doors on our house were locked before driving off to Fremont. Years later now, I am visiting your website and listening to sound clips of Bigfoot. And one made my heart stop, it was the exact same scream we heard so long ago," the report states.

The witness later said there were stories from friends who hunted about the sounds following them through the area and that this sound occurred at approximately 5 or 6 a.m.

The witness and his father were later questioned and the father explained he had heard plenty of outdoor animal noises before in his life, but never one like he heard that morning and certainly none that caused the response this one did from the dogs in the area.

Marc said the creatures are family-oriented, with reports of adults and juveniles, intelligent and very advanced and do not want to be discovered. When asked why no bones of the creatures had been found, Marc explained it was his belief they had been found, just misidentified. Marc showed the group at the Rotary Club various pictures of other evidence and displayed a copy of a lower mandible of a Gigantopithecus, an extinct genus of ape, that some people believe is closely related to the Bigfoot.

As for this area, Marc said Ohio is one of the top sites to have sightings, which shows the creatures are nomadic in nature, considering the sightings across the country which used to be focused in the northwest corner in states such as Washington and Oregon.

"I've had some very weird reports at this part of the state in the winter," Marc said.

The creatures are opportunistic, he said, and with the very rich soil in the area for agriculture and the high deer population, this area is high in food sources for a creature of Bigfoot's size. As for the lack of evidence, however, Marc said it has more to do with the fear of being discovered and possibly harmed.

"The sightings don't last long. It's not like they stand around and 'Let's hold hands,' or something. They're more scared of us than we are of them," Marc said.

For anyone who is concerned about seeing Bigfoot, Marc said that person should not be afraid to come out and talk about it. He said to be prepared if you do see one, though, because it's a shock.

"It's intimidating. Trust me, you better have something to hold onto, because your legs will turn to rubber real quick," Marc said.

Marc also advised not to shoot at the creature, although there are some groups dedicated to hunting it.

"Don't ever be aggressive toward them because they'll be aggressive back," Marc explained.

For anyone who would like more information on the Ohio Bigfoot Organization or on Bigfoot in general, contact the Lorain County Parks District, Columbia Reservation, at 440-236-3254. Marc said there is an upcoming program in September where he will speak. Also, for anyone who may have information on a possible sighting, contact Marc by e-mailing him at madbigfoot@aol.com. - reviewtimes

Follow Up on a Recent Nessie Sighting

....I have been to Loch Ness and visited their shop to have a chat with them about their experience. Firstly, they said the Inverness Courier article was an accurate enough account of what they had seen. I then asked them if there was a possibility it could have been a boat or some other familiar vessel seen on the loch to which they replied no.

Both witnesses came across as people who thought they had genuinely seen something and were not practical jokers or liars. They also rejected with a sigh the accusations levelled at them by anonymous comments on the Courier website that it was the tourist season and so it was time to put out some lies to boost trade. I quite agree with them, it is a nonsensical and libellous thing to say and unfortunately whenever a sighting is claimed from March onwards, this tired excuse is wheeled out by cynical observers. However, I did buy some stuff in their store and before anyone plays that cynic card, I was intending to buy some food for the drive home and theirs was the most convenient place to stop! - continue reading at Follow Up on a Recent Nessie Sighting

Yeah...it's a badger

After capturing the attention of thousands worldwide, an Alexandria roadkill mystery could be solved.

Rumors and speculation about mysterious roadkill could end soon after a retired biology professor examined the carcass Tuesday morning.

"I wouldn't be concerned that it's some kind of alien, imported species or anything like that. It has all the characteristics it needs to be a badger," retired Professor Emeritus from the University of Minnesota - Morris, Dave Hoppe said.

The animal with only a few tufts of hair and five long claws on its front paws was found on Highway 86 in Douglas County last week.

After a Wednesday KSAX report, news of the curious creature took off, capturing the imaginations of people worldwide and interest from dozens of media outlets and TV stations. Guesses ranged from a badger, to a skunk, a wolverine, a foreign dog, a wolf, a genetic mutation or even proof of the mythical chupacabra.

The creature was moved to the Glenwood Department of Natural Resources office for further examination and officials soon said they thought it was a badger, but couldn't be positive.

KSAX contacted Hoppe, who designed and taught classes on vertebrate classification while at U.M.M., and visited the Glenwood office Tuesday to examine the carcass and give his expert opinion.

Hoppee measured the size of the animal in relation to its tail, and examined its teeth, claws and legs, and said he's 95 percent sure it's a young badger, but said it's more difficult to know how it got to it's current, hairless condition.

"If you've got some fully formed hair, it's more likely that the rest of the hair was there and fell out, than that just in a few places, a fully formed patch would grow. That's why I like the mange hypothesis," Hoppe said.

Hoppe said the large amount of parasites likely contributed to the animal's hair loss and it's lighter color could be due to extended periods spent in the sun.

"It's probably emaciated. It hasn't had a good meal in a long time. So, I thinks that's part of the misshapen (carcass)."

Hoppe could not rule out deformities or abnormalities with the creature and said it's no surprise that it's gained so much interest.

"We're impressed with the freaks of nature," he said. "I've got a shelf over at UMM that has all kinds of different freaks that people have brought in over the years; a two-headed pig, a two-headed turtle, a snake with no scales ... The interest people have in that which might be abnormal is normal in itself."

D.N.R. officials said they don't have any further plans of examining the carcass, eliminating the likelihood of any D.N.A testing, but that they'll keep part of the jaw bone for future reference. - ksax

Follow Up: The UFO Chase...and a Shattered Life

Since my recent post The UFO - Ohio Police Chase of 1966, I was directed to the following information by a relative of Portage County Sheriff's Deputy Dale Spaur, one of the police officers who was involved in the chase:

HE CHASED A FLYING SAUCER, NOW HIS LIFE IS SHATTERED

The Cleveland Plain Dealer
Sunday, October 9, 1966

by John De Groot RAVENNA (AP)--In his world of loneliness and twisted nightmares, Dale Spaur wonders if the nightmare will ever end. It began six months ago with "Seven Steps to Hell" and ended with a flying saucer named Floyd. In the predawn hours of a gentle April morning, Portage County Sheriff's Deputy Spaur chased a flying saucer 86 miles.

NOW THE STRANGE craft is chasing him. And he is hiding from it, a bearded stranger peering past the limp curtains of a tiny motel room in Solon.

He no longer is a deputy sheriff.

His marriage is shattered.

He has lost 40 pounds.

He lives on one bowl of cereal and a sandwich each day.

He walks three miles to an $80-a-week painters job. His motel room costs $60 a week. The court has ordered him to pay his wife $20 a week for the support of his two children.

That leaves Dale Spaur exactly nothing.

THE FLYING saucer did it. "If I could change all that I have done in my life," he said, "I would change just one thing. And that would be the night we chased that damn thing. That saucer." He spit the word out, "Saucer." An obscenity.

"MY ENTIRE LIFE came crashing down around my shoulders," he said. "Everything changed. I still don't really know what happened. But suddenly, it was as though everybody owned me. And I no longer had anything for myself. My wife, my home, my children. They all seemed to fade away."

Spaur's wife Daneise now is alone with her two children. She has filed for divorce and is working as a waitress in a bar at Ravenna.

"Something happened to Dale, but I don't know what it was," she says. He came home that day and I never saw him more frightened before. He acted strange, listless. He just sat around. He was very pale."

"THEN LATER, he got real nervous. And he started to run away. He'd just disappear for days and days. I wouldn't see him." "Our marriage fell apart. All sorts of people came to the house. Investigators. Reporters. They kept him up all night. They kept after him, hounding him. They hounded him right into the ground." "And he changed."

Then one night, Dale came home very late. He isn't sure what happened. He walked into the living room. There were some other people there. Things were very tense. Very confused.

HE GRABBED his wife and shook her. Hard. He kept shaking her. It left big ugly bruises on her arms. He doesn't know how or why...

Chief Gerald Buchert (left), Deputy Dale Spaur, and - Dispatcher Robert Wilson were hounded by the press - after the incident.

That was the end of July. Daneise filed assault and battery charges. Dale was jailed and turned in his badge. A newspaper printed a story about the deputy who chased the flying saucer being jailed for beating his wife. When he got out of jail, Dale ran...left town, turned his back on everything.

BUT THE SAUCER followed him, locked in his dreams. In Ravenna, Daneise can only say, "Dale is a lost soul. And everything is finished for us."

In Solon, Dale said, "I have become a freak. I'm so damn lonely. Look at me...34 years old and what do I have? Nothing." "Who knows me? To everyone I'm Dale Spaur, the nut who chased a flying saucer.

My father called me several weeks ago. A long time ago we had a fight. I hadn't heard from him for years. Then he calls me."

"DO YOU THINK he called to ask how I was...to say 'I love you, son... To see if I wanted to go fishing, or something? Hell, no. He wanted to know if I'd seen any more flying saucers."

"I tried to go to church for help. I went to church and the minister introduced me to the congregation. 'We have the man who chased a flying saucer with us today,' he said."

Dale Spaur wept as he told what the flying saucer named Floyd had done to him. He calls it Floyd because he saw it once more while he was still working for the sheriff's department.

THE RADIO operators knew civilians were monitoring their broadcasts. So they agreed to use a code name if the flying saucer was seen again. They called it Floyd...Dale Spaur's middle name. Dale was driving east on Interstate 80-S one night in June [1966]. He looked up. There it was. "Floyd's here with me," he whispered into the radio.

Then he parked the car and sat there, alone. This time Barney Neff was not with him. Dale did not look out the window. He lit a cigarette and stared at the floor of the cruiser. He sat there for nearly 15 minutes...not looking outside, not wanting to see Floyd.

WHEN HE LOOKED up, Floyd had disappeared.

Yet it still follows him. And it has ruined his life.

THIS he believes.

OHIO DEPUTIES CHASE, LOSE BRILLIANT UFO

The Cleveland Plain Dealer
Monday, April 18, 1966

by Douglas Bloomfield
Portage County Bureau

RAVENNA--Hundreds of persons in two states reported seeing a "brilliant and shiny" object over eastern Ohio early yesterday. Two Portage County deputies chased it 86 miles.

Portage County Deputy Sheriff Dale Spaur said he and his partner, Deputy Sheriff W.H. Neff played tag with the mysterious object from 5 a.m. near Ravenna to 6:30 a.m. on the outskirts of Pittsburgh.

Police Chief Gerald Buchert of Mantua saw the object and photographed it in front of his home. He showed a print of his picture to the Plain Dealer but said the Air Force told him not to release it or permit photographs to be taken.

BUCHERT DESCRIBED it as "round when I looked straight up at it, but when it moved to the left--I feel like an idiot saying this--it looked like a saucer, like two table saucers put together."

The photograph showed an object with a very dark bottom and a very light top. Each half seemed to resemble a saucer seen from the side. The lighter top "saucer" was upside down.

Spaur described the object as about 40 feet wide and 18 feet high. He said he clocked it at speeds up to 103 mph as they chased it from Randolph Township to Conway, Pa.

A BRILLIANT beam of light from the object lit the area. Spaur said, "It was so bright, even with the sun coming out, it stood out. Its lines were very distinct," he said as he used the bell of a flashlight to describe the object.

"We were close, closer than I ever want to be again," he told the Plain Dealer. "I know nobody's going to believe it but its true." Spaur said all his former doubts about UFOs were removed.

"Somebody had control over it. It wasn't just an object floating around. It can maneuver. The only sound was a steady, faint humming like an electrical transformer when we first spotted it," he said. The sound was inaudible as the deputies chased the object, they added.

AT CONWAY, PA., Spaur said the object began hovering and was "going for altitude, straight up." After watching for about 20 minutes, he and the others went inside the police station to telephone U.S. Air Force officials he said, and when they came back outside the object was gone.

The Federal Aviation Agency's Air Traffic Control Centers at Oberlin and Pittsburgh said they spotted no unknown objects on their radar early yesterday.

Cops Chase UFO - 'Seven Steps To Hell' Enigma Solved

Excerpts from the original story ....Deputies Spaur and Neff were checking on a car parked alongside U.S. 224 between Randolph and Atwater. The car was filled with radio equipment and had a strange emblem painted on its side, a triangle with a bolt of lightning inside it. Above the emblem was written, "Seven Steps to Hell."

Behind them they heard a strange humming noise and turning, said they saw a huge saucer shaped craft rise out of a woods and hover above them, bathing them in a warm white light. Then it moved off. Leaving the mystery car behind, never to be seen again, the two deputies hopped into their cruiser and chased the object, sometimes at speeds of more than 100 miles an hour. The chase finally ended when the cruiser ran out of gas near Pittsburgh. They said the craft they chased was about 50 feet across and 15 to 20 feet high with a large dome on its top and an antenna jutted out from the rear of the dome.

Now here's the break in the case after 40 years...

"Seven Steps To Hell" is an unofficial tab {used in Germany as a "badge of honor"} under the 7th's "Pyramid Of Power" patch. A lightning bolt would have been added by a Military Intelligence Unit. The 7th Army's Headquarters is still located at Stuffgart-Vaihingen, Germany. Now you have to ask what are they doing in the states? Well, a reserve Military Intelligence Unit The 353rd Comm Recon Co (Scty) of the 7th was moved to Pennsylvania in 1954. Was it one of the fabled Nazi Discs?

Perhaps they were tracking a true alien craft. The eyewitness accounts and new information uncovered by Frank Riccardi of Eyepod.Org attest to the fact that the 7th was there, with their radio equipment. Whatever the craft was the United States Military was tracking it and had arrived shortly before Deputy Sheriff Dale Spaur, and Special Deputy W.L. Neff arrived on scene. Full story, photo of the patch, and relavent links pertaining to the actual existance of the patch are on site at Eyepod.Org. This explains the harassment of the witnesses and the Military's quick move to orchestrate a full cover-up. Dale Spaur of course suffered the most... Here we are almost 40 years to the day... - www.eyepod.org

The UFO - Ohio Police Chase of 1966

One of the most dramatic encounters by police officers with an apparently structured, low-level UFO occurred in the early morning of April 17, 1966. Officers of the Portage County, Ohio, Sheriff's Department first saw the object rise up from near ground level, bathing them in light, near Ravenna, Ohio, about 5:00 A.M. Ordered by the sergeant to pursue the object, they chased it for eighty-five miles across the border into Pennsylvania, as it seemed to play a cat-and-mouse game with them. Along the route, police officers from other jurisdictions saw the object and joined in the chase.

Deputy Sheriff Dale Spaur and Mounted Deputy Wilbur 'Barney’ Neff had left their scout car to investigate an apparently abandoned automobile on Route 224. Spaur described the sighting in these words:

“I always look behind me so no one can come up behind me. And when I looked in this wooded area behind us, I saw this thing. At this time it was coming up . . . to about tree top level. I'd say about one hundred feet. it started moving toward us.... As it came over the trees, I looked at Barney and he was still watching the car . . and he didn't say nothing and the thing kept getting brighter and the area started to get light. .. . I told him to look over his shoulder, and he did.

"He just stood there with his mouth open for a minute, as bright as it was, and he looked down. And I started looking down and I looked at my hands and my clothes weren't burning or anything, when it stopped right over on top of us. The only thing, the only sound in the whole area was a hum . . . like a transformer being loaded or an overloaded transformer when it changes. . . .

"I was petrified, and, uh, so I moved my right foot, and everything seemed to work all right. And evidently he made the same decision I did, to get something between me and it, or us and it, or whatever you would say. So we both went for the car, we got in the car and we sat there...."

As they watched, the UFO moved toward the east, and then stopped again. Spaur picked up the microphone and reported to the dispatcher. At this time, the object was about 250 feet away, brilliantly lighting up the area ("It was very bright; it'd make your eyes water," Spaur said.) Sergeant Schoenfelt, off duty at the station, told them to follow it and keep it under observation while they tried to get a photo unit to the scene.

Spear and Neff turned south on Route 183, then back east on Route 224, which placed the object to their right, and out the left window. “At this time,” said Spaur. "it came straight south, just one motion, buddy, just a smooth glide . . ."and began moving east with them pacing it, just to their right at an estimated altitude of 300-500 feet, illuminating the ground beneath it. Once more the UFO darted to the north, now left of the car, and they sped up to over 100 mph to keep pace with it.

As the sky became brighter with predawn light, Spaur and Neff saw the UFO in silhouette, with a vertical projection at its rear. The object began to take on a metallic appearance as the chase continued. Spaur kept up a running conversation with other police cars that were trying to catch up with them. Once when they made a wrong turn at an intersection, the object stopped, then turned and came back to their position.

Police Officer Wayne Huston of East Palestine, Ohio, situated near the Pennsylvania border, had been monitoring the radio broadcasts and was parked at an intersection he knew the Portage County officers would he passing soon. Shortly afterward he saw the UFO pass by with the sheriff's cruiser in hot pursuit. He swung out and joined the chase. At Conway, Pennsylvania, Spaur spotted another parked police car and stopped to enlist his aid, since their Cruiser was almost out of gas. The Pennsylvania officer called his dispatcher.

According to Spaur, as the four officers stood and watched the UFO, which had stopped and was hovering, there was traffic on the radio about jets being scrambled to chase the UFO, and ". . . we could see these planes coming in.... When they started talking about fighter planes, it was just as if that thing head every word that was said; it went PSSSSSHHEW, straight up; and I mean when it went up, friend, it didn't play no games; it went straight up” (Transcript of taped interview with Dale Spaur).

The Air Force "identified" the UFO as a satellite, seen part of the time, and confused with the planet Venus. Under pressure from Ohio officials, Major Hector Quintanilla, chief of PROJECT BLUE BOOK, had an acrimonious confrontation with witnesses and refused to change the identification, although it was pointed out to him that they had seen the UFO in addition to Venus and the moon at the conclusion of the observation. Major Quintanilla also denied that any jets had been scrambled.

William B. Weitzel conducted an exhaustive investigation on behalf of the NATIONAL INVESTIGATIONS COMMITTEE ON AERIAL PHENOMENA (NICAP), obtaining taped interviews, signed statements, sketches, and all pertinent data which was assembled into a massive report that was made available to congressional investigators. When the UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO UFO PROJECT was initiated in 1966, a copy of Weitzel’s report was hand-delivered to the director, Dr. Edward U. CONDON, for his consideration. The CONDON REPORT, published two years later, does not mention the case. Richard Hall - NICAP

Spauer/Neff, Portage County UFO Chase

Francis Ridge:
If this incident seems familiar to you, just maybe you saw the motion picture, "Close Encounters of the Third Kind". Investigated by NICAP's William Weitzel, this report, also known as the Spauer/Neff Case, was the basis for the UFO "chase" in this film. This case involves police witnesses, confrontation, light beam, brilliant illumination, light engulfment, sound, cat and mouse chase, with rapid upward departure. Special thanks go out to Mark Rodeghier of CUFOS for providing the documentation and to Loy Pressley for converting them into text so I could make the web pages.

Dr. James E. McDonald:
Ravenna, Ohio (April 17, 1966) calls for reevaluation not only on the scientific grounds involved, but also to avoid unfairly subjecting to local public ridicule the several officers who have testified. (Compare Bertrand & Hunt in the Exeter case) The available evidence (especially Wm. Weitzel's extensive report for NICAP) seems to me to make the astronomical explanation, that now stands as the official Air Force evaluation, quite unreasonable. - NICAP

COLUMBIANA, OHIO

It was Sunday A.M. April 17, 1966 when over the Police Radios I heard the Summit County and Portage County radio operators advising there Patrol Cars of a report of a flying object reported by a woman. Later the Portage Patrol Cars reported to his office that he had seen the object and was following it. He was following it east and towards Columbiana County. As he came through Columbiana Ohio I went to Route #14 and waited. At 5:30 A.M. the object went over me at what I thought was around 800'. The object appeared to look like a large Ice Cream cone with point down. The pointed part didn't look like a solid looked more like light beams. At that time I pulled out and caught up with the Portage County Car and followed behind him on into Pennor. The object was traveling at speeds 85 to 105 ground speed. At the entrance to Brady Run Park we lost sight of it. We went on into Bridgeport and then we saw it again. We followed it on into Conway, Penns where a Conway Police Officer had his office to call the Greater Pitt. Airport. At that time I returned back to East Palestine, Ohio.

To whom it may concern--

I was on duty as a Watch supervisor in the Greater Pittsburgh Tower during the period of 0000-0800 EDST on the day of April 17, 1966.

I received a report from some local police agencies that an unidentified flying object had been sighted in Ohio and had been followed into our area of which I had radar surveillance. I observed nothing on the radar presentation that coincided with the reported object nor did I observe any other radar return.

May 18, 1966

At 5:20 A.M. stopped at Conway Hotel and had a cup of coffee. I then left the hotel coming down Second Avenue to 11th Street and made a left turn on 11th Street preceded up the hill. Looked to my right and saw a shining object. I thought it was a reflection off of a plane. I got to Mickey's Lounge on the top of the hill and I looked back and it wasn't moving so I turned the police car around and came back down 11th Street and went to Adamowski Service Station on 10th Street and Route 65. I then got out of the police car and looked at the object again. I rubbed my eyes 3 or 4 times but didn't say anything to anyone for the time being. I saw 2 other patrol cars pull up and the officers got out of the car and asked me if I saw it. I replied SAW WHAT! They pointed to the object and I told them I had been watching it for the last 10 minutes. The object was the shape of a half of football, was very bright and about 25 to 35 feet in diameter. The object then moved out towards Harmony Township approximately a 1,000 feet high, then it stopped then went straight up real fast to about 3,500 feet. I then called the base station told the radio operator to notify the Pittsburgh airport. He asked me if I was sick. I told him if I was sick so were the other 3 patrolmen. The operator got the airport on the line and told them what happened, he told them to hold the line and in the meantime we kept watching the object and at that time a passenger plane passed to the left about 1,000 feet below the object. We relayed the message to the operator and he relayed it to the airport. The object continued to go upward until it got as small as a ballpoint pen. Then we received a message to make a phone call. We preceded to the Rochester Police Department and made the phone call. Officer Parr talked to someone and then we returned to Conway Police Department where I gave Officer Parr my name and gas for his police car to return home.

The object was in my sight from 5:20 A. M. to 6:15 A. M.

NATIONAL INVESTIGATIONS COMMITTEE ON AERIAL PHENOMENA
WASHINGTON, D. C. 20036

Maj. Donald E. Keyhoe
USMC (RET.) Director

By Deputy Sheriff Dale F. Spaur and Posse Member W. L. Neff

STATEMENT: On April 17, 1966, at about 5:00 AM, the undersigned, Dale F. Spaur and Barney (W. L) Neff, were patrolling the southeast portion of Portage County, Ohio. We had been hearing radio traffic about a UFO near Portage County. We found an abandoned car on the berm on Rt. 224 between Atwater and Randolph. We left our car to routinely investigate this vehicle. Spaur noticed a light over the trees on the hill next to the berm, and called Neff's attention to it. As we watched, the light came closer and a large, self-illuminated object was seen as its source. The object came directly overhead and hovered above us. Its light lit up the ground where we were standing, and our cruiser, P-13. It was too bright to look at without hurting the eyes. We got into our car and radioed that we had spotted the UFO. During that time, it began moving away from us. We followed it down 224 onto Rt. 14, to the Ohio-Pennsylvania border, and into Pennsylvania on Rt. 51; then through Rochester, Pa., and on Rt. 65, up to Conway, where we stopped. As we passed East Palestine, Ohio, Patrolman Wayne Huston, of the East Palestine Police, joined in our pursuit. In Conway, Pa., Officer Frank Panzanella met us where we stopped, and we stood with him watching the object as it hovered and then rose, twice, in a rapid climb. The object seemed 30-45 feet across, and 18-24 feet high. The light it gave off lit up the ground over the road and over fields as we pursued it. At first it was about 150 feet up; then it rose to around 1000 feet. During the chase it changed altitude and direction, maneuvered smoothly, had a sort of dome-shaped top, and at times showed a projection on the top part, near the trailing edge. Not all of it was self-illuminated; part of the top trailing portion looked metallic; not shiny, but satiny. At times we measured its speed over the ground at about 103 miles per hour. At one point, near Rochester, we lost it while getting through a bridge-underpass area, but when we emerged, it had come down lower and seemed to have waited for us; it went off fast ahead again then. We were, and are, sure we were not chasing an illusion, or seeing a reflection, star, planet, or similar still object. As far as our part in this sighting is concerned, at least, the article by Tom Schley in the Beaver County Times, April 18, 1966, about this, is accurate.

Signed:

Dale Spauer
William Neff

DESCRIPTIONS OF NUMBERED DRAWINGS: SPAUR-NEFF, HUSTON

SPAUR-NEFF, UFO DETAIL

1. Projection, tilted from rear (trailing edge) 18' long, tapered to to tip

2. Dome-shaped top; partly metallic, partly self-illuminated

3. Glowing front (leading edge)

4. Cone-shaped light underneath

5. Glowing tip of trailing edge

6. Metallic surface

7. Sharp "drop-off" (Neff disagrees; remembers more rounded here)

8. Rounded "undercarriage"

9. Line separating metallic from self-illuminated portions

SPAUR-NEFF, SIGHTING TERMINUS

1. Bright spot to right of moon, a little above axis of symmetry of crescent

2. Crescent moon (bump in concave portion indicates "nose" of "Man in Moon")

3. TV antenna on nearby house, through whose elements Spaur and Neff saw the
UFO hovering before 1st upward elevation

4. Position of UFO after 1st elevation, above moon (now moving away, or disappearing)

(NOTE: Panzanella agreed with relative positions of levels of hovering; Spaur agreed with Panzanella's on-the-spot location of object relative to nearby houses; Spaur examined a photograph made from the spot he claimed to have been standing.)

HUSTON, UFO DETAIL

1. Cone-shaped light underneath

2. Bright, self-illuminated solid appearing top

3. Dome shape

4. Cone tilted toward rear, of direction of motion, more so than shown here.

(NOTE: Huston testified to having seen, once, a project; only got one view of it.)

FURTHER NOTES: On Spaur-Neff joint signed testimony: Until over a week after the sighting, Neff was "in hiding," refusing to be interviewed by anyone. I typed a summary statement for Spaur to take to him, along with Spaur's drawings. Neff finally agreed to be interviewed on on April 28. I mailed the statements and drawings to Spaur; there was some confusion as to who was to sign the extra space; Spaur did this, so Neff signed elsewhere on the sheets.

Rectangular UFO Appears During Thunderstorm - Near Troy, Ohio

MUFON CMS - between Piqua and Troy, Ohio - 6/10/2011: A thunderstorm was moving in as I was driving home from Piqua, Ohio to Troy, Ohio (just north of Dayton on I-75)between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m. I was driving alone southbound on Troy-Sidney Rd., which is a very pretty alternative to I-75. It was about 90 and extremely humid. I only had my phone camera with me but I really wanted to get a shot of the lightning bolts that I was seeing ahead of me! The storm was coming in from the southwest over Troy. I pulled off the country road, put my flashers on and stood outside my car with my arms resting on the door to stabilize my hands. How lucky do you have to be to catch lighting--especially without a tripod? So, I took lots of pictures, probably about 20 with the hope of capturing some lightning bolts. When I finished taking pictures I had to drive into the storm and it was very scary. It was pouring rain so hard that I couldn't see and then there was hail!

A few hours after I got home, I downloaded my pictures to my computer and saw something strange! It's a rectangular, flat looking UFO. I did not see it when I took the picture, and I did not hear anything other than thunder in the distance. We are about 10 or 15 miles north of Dayton airport but this was not a plane coming in for a landing. I would have heard and seen that.

Unfortunately, I had my phone camera resolution set pretty low and so it's not a high-quality picture. I was standing outside my car, it was not taken through the windshield. Also, I checked the pictures before and after this one but no object! I tinted picture to see the object better, the original is a color photo. (I'll attach the original and two altered pictures to this report.)

I remember seeing something on a UFO TV show once about UFOs being drawn to thunderstorms to get 'charged' up or powered up. That totally makes sense to me and this was a very powerful storm!

I'm very curious to learn what this object may have been and if anyone else has seen something similar. Please let me know if you have any more information on it. I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks for your time!
Diana Brower

NOTE: there have been several previous UFO sightings during thunderstorms. Is it just opportunist...or is there a connection between the storms and sightings? Lon
