Esoterica: The Pendle Witch Trial, Morrow Road Legend and Real Haunted Houses

The Witch Trial That Made Legal History

In recent years children as young as three have given evidence in court cases, but in the past children under 14 were seen as unreliable witnesses. A notorious 17th Century witch trial changed that.

Nine-year-old Jennet Device was an illegitimate beggar and would have been lost to history but for her role in one of the most disturbing trials on record.

Jennet's evidence in the 1612 Pendle witch trial in Lancashire led to the execution of 10 people, including all of her own family.

In England at that time paranoia was endemic. James l was on the throne, living in fear of a Catholic rebellion in the aftermath of Guy Fawkes' gun powder plot. The king had a reputation as an avid witch-hunter and wrote a book called Demonology.

"It was a mandate for the British to fight witches," explains Prof Ronald Hutton from the University of Bristol.

At the time Lancashire had a reputation for being full of trouble-makers and subversives. Jennet lived with her mother Elizabeth, her grandmother Demdike, older sister Alizon and brother James in the shadow of the Pendle hill. Villagers dubbed Demdike a "cunning woman".

In March 1612, Alizon cursed a pedlar who would not give her any pins. The pedlar collapsed and his son reported it to an ambitious local magistrate, Roger Nowell.

He interviewed Alizon, who confessed to bewitching the pedlar but also accused their neighbours, who the family were having a feud with, of bewitching and killing four people.

The neighbours pointed the finger straight back at Demdike, accusing her of witchcraft.

"Nowell was extremely zealous," says Prof Malcolm Gaskill from the University of East Anglia.

"He sees his route to success in his career is to identify non-conformists, that could be Catholics or witches, and bring them to justice."

He arrested Alizon, granny Demdike, as well as their neighbours Anne Whittle (also known as Chattox) and her daughter Anne Redferne.

Jennet's mother then hosted a party on Good Friday, when all "good citizens" should have been in church. A local constable heard rumours of a meeting of witches, so arrested everyone present. The family also implicated others and all were accused of trying to plot to kill a man using witchcraft.

Alice Nutter, from a respectable land-owning family, her sister-in-law, nephew and friend were among those arrested.

"At that time they were a strong Catholic family. I think [Nowell] thought he would curry favour with the King and the powers that be if he was catching Catholics as well," says Colin Nutter, a descendant of Alice who still lives near the Pendle hill.

"She was used as a pawn for his own ends really."

In his book Demonology, James l wrote: "Children, women and liars can be witnesses over high treason against God." This influenced the justice system and led to Nowell using Jennet as his key witness.

The clerk of the court, Thomas Potts, wrote a book of all the notes he made of the trial, which became a bestseller and spread the story far and wide.

In The Wonderful Discoverie of Witches in the Countie of Lancaster, Potts recounted how Jennet's mother Elizabeth screamed out when her daughter entered the court. Jennet demanded her mother be removed and then climbed on a table and calmly denounced her as a witch.

Her convincing evidence was believed by the jury and after a two-day trial all her family and most of her neighbours were found guilty of causing death or harm by witchcraft.

The day after they were hanged at Gallows Hill.

But Jennet's influence went far beyond Lancashire. Thomas Potts' writings and Jennet's evidence were included in a reference handbook for magistrates, The Country Justice.

The book was used by all magistrates, including those in the colonies in America, and led them to seek the testimony of children in trials of witchcraft.

So at the notorious Salem witch trials in 1692, most of the evidence was given by children. Nineteen people were hanged.

There had been earlier cases of children being witnesses in witch trials, but the law stated those under 14 were not credible witnesses because they could not be sworn under oath. Jennet's testimony changed all that.

Today children of any age can be called to give evidence as their competence depends upon their understanding not their age.

Ultimately though, Jennet fell victim to the very precedent she set herself in 1633.

Twenty years after the trial she too was accused of witchcraft along with 16 others by 10-year-old Edmund Robinson.

They were found guilty by a jury but the judges were not happy and it was referred to the Privy Council. England had become more sceptical over time and physical evidence was demanded.

Edmund eventually admitted lying because of the stories he had heard about the Pendle witch trial.

The last known record of Jennet Device was in 1636.

Despite having been acquitted she was not allowed to leave Lancaster Castle until she had paid for her board for the time she had spent there on trial. For someone like Jennet, that could have been impossible. - BBC

A Haunting These Houses Go

“... Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding the darkness within... walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.” - Shirley Jackson, “The Haunting of Hill House”

I rather feel like Johnny Carson’s predecessor, Jack Parr, when he returned after an unscheduled time away from “The Tonight Show.” His first words when he returned were: “Now, as I was saying...”

Late summer and into the fall is a ripe time for haunted houses. What follows are accounts of real haunted houses, and a house that is apparently doing the haunting itself. That is, the house doesn’t have a ghost, the house is the ghost. See if you agree...

The first haunting is, without being too specific, way past the Dover gravel pit. (I don’t want to bother the current residents... if there are any.)

An older couple was living there at the time I write of, as I learned from my source, a local figure in the retail world, now retired.

The couple had been in the house for a while with nothing unusual happening but for whatever reason, they had not had cause to go down into the basement. One day, with nothing better to do while her husband was off fishing, the woman decided to finally explore the basement.

A light switch to the right of the stairs brought two dusty, barely adequate bulbs to life. Carefully negotiating the unfamiliar wooden stairs, the woman surveyed the basement and its concrete, slab floor. Ceiling high shelves of some vintage lined two of the walls. Several small crates and large, heavy cardboard boxes stood off to the left. A metal work table dominated the center of the basement. A metal storage cabinet stood to the right at the end of the shelves.

Seeing nothing of particular interest, though her husband might appreciate the tools she saw on the shelves, she turned to go back up when something near the metal cabinet caught her eye. She saw what appeared to be fresh, human footprints in the dust, those of a child of maybe ten or so. They led from the cabinet about six feet or so to the outer wall and stopped, as if whoever made them had walked through the wall.

Later, when her husband returned home, the woman told him of what she had been doing and about the footprints. He responded that no one had been down there since they had moved in, let alone a kid.

Going down to see for himself, however, he soon called back up to his wife at the top of the stairs. She went down and over to the cabinet, where he pointed at the floor. “This the place?” he asked. She nodded and looked down. Just dusty cement, no footprints.

The next day the man went down to do an inventory of the tools and glanced over to where his wife had thought she had seen footprints... and there they were; small, bare footprints of a child that disappeared at the outer cement wall.

Not computing for a long moment, the man, for some reason, reached over to the wall where an old broom stood and swept the footprints away.

As it turned out, a lot of the tools on the shelves were old, maybe from the end of the 19th or early 20th century; an antique dealer would pay a lot for them.

The prints reappeared once more as the man made several trips to gather the tools and again, he swept them away. He then locked the door to the basement and never went down there again. There was no reason to.

Perhaps even now, behind a locked door, small footprints march across a dusty floor and through the wall.

Our next little tale took place in Kootenai, not that long ago. A young couple with a two-year-old son moved into an older house, (naturally) and wondered at the odd attitude of the landlord. He seemed hesitant, even apologetic, without actually ever coming out and saying he was sorry about something.

The rent was great. The young man’s wages were not stellar, to say the least, and $550 a month for a four bedroom, two bath house was a dream.

The house was World War I era. Renovated in the 70s, there were nine rooms total and everything seemed great. Until the first day the young father went to work and his young wife began hearing... things. Just “noises” she would tell him when he came home from work. Like... she just didn’t know. Maybe whispering, coming from the walls and attic.

At first, he told her it was just nerves. She was likely imagining things because she was home alone all day with the responsibilities of a new mother. She needed to take the baby out, go to the library or to the newly opened Wal-Mart. Make some friends, whatever.

The young woman loved her man to pieces, but he was full of the old crapola.

A few nights later, the young father got up in the middle of the night for a drink of water; his sinuses had always bothered him. (Snoring dried them out.) And he heard... it, them, whispering in the walls. Voices like they were being screened through a mesh of wires and cheesecloth. He was unable to make out words, but they were human voices all the same.

The young family found a two bedroom apartment in Sandpoint the following month and the landlord of the old house became apologetic once more to another family.

You aren’t required to tell tenants or a buyer if a house is haunted, you see; you must only share whether someone died or was killed in the building.

The one time I went hunting with my friend, “Alex,” was like going hunting with comic Bill Engval. He is fun, and so was Alex.

But the next time Alex headed out, he was all alone. It was late October and he was a few miles west of town when he saw a modest-sized buck through the trees about a couple hundred yards away.

It was a crisp, forty-five degrees. Tree branches—a few birch supporting a few dry leaves that rustled in the wind—framed an increasingly dramatic October sky.

Following an old trail, Alex lost sight of his quarry, but something caught his attention.

Down to his right, in a valley of long shadows, barely visible in the waning light, was a house. “What the F---?” Dark gray, Alex could just make out the shutters of what was apparently the upper floors of a house. But out here, in the middle of the woods? Again, he thought to himself, “What the F---?”

Alex searched briefly for a way down, but there was no trail through the brush and trees. On top of that, the sky was becoming even more dramatic as heavier, dark clouds had begun to move in. Retreating the way he had come, Alex got back to his rig just before a cold, heavy rain started.

A mountain biker, (of which I proudly am one), told me several years ago that in late August a couple years earlier he had seen what looked to be an old Victorian-style house down in a hollow, but when he was on the same trail a few weeks later, he saw nothing but trees. From the description of the location, it sounded like the same trail that Alex had trod. I’ve also heard, second-hand, that two horseback riders saw something similar.

The Legend of Morrow Road

Morrow Road in Clay Township, Michigan has been known for it's horrifying legend and hauntings for over a century.

In 1893, during a snowstorm, a woman went out in the middle of the night searching for her toddler that had somehow wandered from the house. She was unable to find it and froze to death. It is said that the bodies were never found. But it is a fact that their spirits still haunt the road to this day. The area is also said to be ancient burial ground of the Indians.

The legend is if you drive out there at midnight, park on the old bridge, and honk three times, the woman will appear to see if you have her baby. She is described as wearing a bloody white gown and has a very distorted face with no eyes. If you try to flee from her, she will chase your car down the road and may even kill you.

Other eyewitness accounts have reported seeing glowing orbs in the woods, and the sounds of a crying infant near the bridge.

Skeptical of this whole legend, I got together with some friends and we drove out there one night in 1992. A night I will never forget. It was around 12:30 and pitch black. We got to the bridge and the hair on the back of my neck was standing. I felt like something was there watching us from the woods. We shut off the car and sat there for a minute. At the time, this was just a small one-lane dirt road with woods on both sides. There were no houses around. My friend honked the horn a few times and right away we heard the baby crying. It was coming from underneath the bridge. We got out of the car and I leaned over the guard rail. I could hear it crying, but couldn't see anything. Somewhere out of the darkness we heard a woman shout, "Where is my baby!!!"

That was it for me. I got in the car and my friends stayed out there goofing around. I saw a bright light come out of the woods and it came down the road toward the car. As it got closer, it winked out. My friends were getting spooked, so they got back in the car. They said they heard a woman screaming. We started the car, and before we could even take off, a silhouette of a woman came running out of the woods up to the car. My blood ran cold and I watched her fly right up to the driver's side window, I couldn't see her face, but saw her long hair.

My friend stepped on it and she pounded on the window as we sped off. We were going about 60 mph and one of my friends screamed. I looked back and the woman was right there looking through the back window. It seemed like forever, but we finally got off the road and the woman was gone by then. I will never go down that road again.

The road is now paved and the bridge was torn down. Houses are even being built.

Pub ghost or trick of the light?

This picture apparently shows a ghost lurking in the doorway of The Wortley Arms, in Thurgoland.

It was taken by amateur photographer Paul Cocker who was shooting the 18th century building as part of his hobby.

He says it was only when he downloaded the photo he realised he appeared to have captured a supernatural being.

“I’m a rational bloke - I think a lot of this ghost stuff is claptrap,” the 41-year-old of Manchester Road, Deepcar, says. “But I have no answer as to what on earth this is.”

Trick of the light, per chance? Touch of photoshopping, maybe?

“Obviously when we get a photo like this sent to us the first thing we check for is evidence it’s been tampered with digitally,” explains Joe Collins, of Rotherham Paranormal. “If you check pixel definition you can usually tell and this certainly doesn’t appear to have been altered in any way.

“We’re looking into it but there are rumours the Wortley Arms is haunted – certainly it’s an old building with plenty of history. We’re planning a visit there to investigate.”

In the mean time, the advice to drinkers?

Keep a particularly close eye on your pints. - thestar

Skinwalker Chronicles III

This past December, I posted Skinwalker Chronicles that referenced stories of the infamous malevolent witch capable of transforming itself into a wolf, coyote, bear, bird, or any other animal. Since that time, I have received several anecdotes and inquiries about Skinwalkers. A few weeks ago, I compiled a few anecdotes and posted Skinwalker Chronicles II. The following are several more responses that were forwarded and referred to me:

"...my grandpa was asked by "the old woman" to go with her to Snake Butte. She had a gunny sack full of dog pups with her. They're walking along a while until they get to the butte. There's a rock there that when you go around it you come to the butte. She tells him to wait there for her no matter how long she takes and not to go look at what she's doing. He sits for over an hour and starts to get bored so he goes around the corner. As he does he sees 2 huge snakes eating those poor pups with the woman standing there laughing with an evil tone when suddenly she herself turns into a snake and starts eating the pups! He was so freaked out he hauled ass out of there and headed straight to his house 5 miles away. Later on he sees "the old woman' and she gets mad at him for watching her and not waiting for her at the rock. Since that time, everyone in our family stayed clear of her until the day she left. That's another story"

-----

"I've seen a skinwalker ONCE! I have never seen one since. My older brother, older sister and I were going home for the weekend. We were coming in from Phoenix. We had to leave pretty late. It usually takes us 5 hours to get home which is in Low Mountain near Pinon, AZ. We drove toward Keams Canyon highway and took a certain dirt road that would take us straight to Low Mountain. Before we reached the dirt road we noticed a very old lady walking on the side of the highway with a cane at 2 o'clock in the morning! She had her scarf around her head, a long black jacket and wearing a green dress. We did not think anything of it but thought it was weird that she was walking late at night on a highway. The reservation is really dark at night and there are hardly anyone driving on the roads. We eventually turned on the dirt road.

A mile away from the highway we noticed the same old lady walking on the side of the dirt road with her cane. I freaked out! I started crying because we knew that it was the same lady 15 miles back. My brother stepped on the gas and started driving faster. He gave us some medicine to protect us from harm. We eventually got to a highway that takes us to Chinle, Low Mountain, or Pinon. We passed the first bridge and we noticed that the old lady was sitting on the highway with her head down waving the cane in the air. Before we could pass her the car just shut down and wouldn't start. The old lady stood up facing the opposite way from us so we wouldn't see her face and walked across the other side of the road. She turned her head to face us and her face was painted all black. She kept walking and eventually disappeared in the distance. My brother turned the ignition and the car started!! It scared the hell outta me!!! I was crying so bad that I never wanted to drive through the road again.

When we got home we told my parents about it. My dad said that there was an old couple that lived between the two highways that did bad medicine on people. He also said that her husband had passed on not long ago and that she walks that road every now and then. They had two kids; one of them passed away at a very young age with an unknown cause of death and the other one drinks and huffs. We ended up driving back the longer way which was taking the highway to the junction road and going toward Ganado. It was very real and very scary."

-----

"...my first encounter was when I was about 13 years old. My family always has a peyote meeting on New Years Eve and into New Years Day. On this particular New Years Eve my family was blessing the new year, all my cousins and I were sleeping in my Mom's hogan while most of our parents and guests were in the tepee praying. They said that a man saw something outside the tepee and he told the fire chief, and he told my uncle. My uncle woke up my older brothers and they got out the guns and our spotlight to look for whatever was creeping around our houses.

We live in a small valley in the highest part of our part of the reservation, near Pinon. All of a sudden I heard a loud gunshot, my brother's 30-30. It scared the hell out of me since I was fast asleep, but my sister was the only one in the house with us and she already had burned some cedar and had said a protection prayer for us. My brothers and one of my cousins were outide shooting at some sort of creature that was running around in an arroyo about half a mile from our house. My niece and I had gotten out of our beds and were watching from the window. They were sure that they had shot it a few times but it would just get and run off again.

When my mother and father smeared white ash on the bullets they started shooting again the creature left our valley. It is a very taboo to do any sort of hunting or shooting during blessing ceremonies but something had to done that time. That is as close as I have ever come to a skinwalker, as far as I know."

-----

"...the only reason I know about skinwalkers is because of my boyfriend and my Mom told me abut them...no lie, it's is scary and you shouldnt mess around with it at all. But you shouldn't say its fake case odds are you wouldnt even know. I have a lot of shapeshifters, skinwalkers, staginies or whatever you would perfer to call them living or staying by my house. They follow my boyfriend around and sometimes I see them watching me...standing outside my window. About 3 months ago there was a skinwalker outside my house watching my Mom as she came home from work...he was outside for a long time. No one has the right to say what is fiction or fact because you wouldn't even know. A skinwalker told me when my dad was going to die. It was broad daylight and I was in the car with my family. I saw a white owl and it looked right back at me. A week later my dad passed away...so don't say anything unless you know for a fact!"

-----

"There are too many weird encounters that went on the year my husband and I started dating. It was as though 'someone or something' did everything they could to keep us apart....for instance.

It was a summer evening and the sun had started to go down and we took a short stroll just outside my house. As soon as we started walking, I saw a shadow quickly appear and walk behind a huge cedar tree. Once I noticed this I told my boyfriend and he threw a big rock at it. As soon the rock hit the tree, a huge bird or owl flew out of the cedar tree. I have never in my life seen anything this big! The wings on this thing had to have stretched out at least 7-8 feet across. It was dusk, but still enough sun out to see in front of me and I know for a fact I saw something. I believe whatever hid behind that tree turned into a bird and flew off. It was so weird. After that, we had a very unsettling summer of this strange "shadow visitor" making it's appearance every now and then."

-----

"...you want me to describe the witch who is a 'skinwalker'? My father told me a story about how they initiate themselves to become one of these bad medicine men/women. They have to kill their own child or sibling; and also they have sex with their siblings. They become this weird looking animal that can run faster than a car. They do wear very old animal skins and they do not allow to expose themselves. We'd be so damn lucky to catch them red-handed but they have powers to paralyze you so that you cannot see them. If you do happen to see who the person is they eventually die in four days so that is why they are very secretive. It does have a lot to do with jealousy. They want what you have even if it is nothing to you...it's huge for them. You cannot kill them with a white man's gun powder, or anything of that nature. It all has to be traditional weapons we use to use a long time ago such as an arrowhead, traditional prayers, or a certain type of ceremony.

Most medicine man/woman would never admit who it is but they'll hint it to you which can be frustrating. My father also said that they can be the sweetest person in the world to you and you'd never know that they're witching you. They use dead people's bones to make you go crazy and you don't even realize how much you lose self-respect. They are very scary and wicked people.

Photos: Unknown Entity - Worthing, West Sussex, UK

I received the following correspondence from a reader in West Sussex, UK:

A couple of years ago a neighbour and I were discussing ghosts and the paranormal. She said she had something to show me. On her cell phone were 3 pictures taken by her 5 year old son at 5am in the morning. His mother had gone downstairs to get a baby bottle heated up for her 8 month old son. You can see the edge of the bed and her husbands bulky legs under the quilt. The cot with her 8 month old son is in the left hand corner.

The eldest 5 year old son, who had hopped into her bed snapped the pictures as he usually likes playing with her cellphone. It's a common occurrence with him. She came across the photos when clearing out her phone of clutter some months later. The time stamps on the photos were removed when I transferred them over to my computer and then an external hard drive. However, I did witness the time stamps, dates and the pictures showed they were taken within 3 -7 seconds of each other.

The picture shows a woman that looks nothing like my neighbour, the head shape is all wrong and it appears she is wearing a suit and skirt. When you enhance the picture certain features look terrifying. My neighbour stated she had been in her dressing gown and pj's.

My neighbour has had lots of paranormal activity in her house over the years and has witnessed on one occasion a red-eyed being staring through her dining room window at night. Her husband has also witnessed the same strange going's on. I have no reason to disbelieve my neighbour as she is one of the most honest and open people I know.

I have myself had weird going's on in my home. Appliances turn on and off, the usual weird things, which I ignore most of the time as I believe all ghosts to be demonic and I basically tell them to take a hike. It doesn't scare me in the slightest, although from your POV it probably should. LOL

I happened to snap a picture in my garden one day and this is what prompted my neighbour to show me her photographs as I rushed round to show her the garden shot (I was excited). If you zoom into the fence you should see 3 brown wooden dots, scroll up slightly and you shall see a transparent human figure wearing what looks like a hat. I have placed a smaller version of the original so you can see the location, and then you can find it on the original larger file. (NOTE: I examined the photos of the garden and determined that it may simply be a light anomaly. I have posted the images below - you can click the images for a larger version...Lon)

We live in Sussex, near to Clapham Woods (Friends Of Hecate sacrificial grounds) and Highdown Hill. Sussex is steeped in mysticism and hauntings, so I shouldn't be too surprised. M

NOTE: I examined the images of the figure and have determined that there was no manipulation and, in fact, that the photos may be genuine. What I find interesting is that there does seem to be some definition on the entity. My associate Irene took a look and agrees with me that it looks like a person or being looking to it's left wearing some type of scarf and jacket / suit and the hands in the pockets. My impression is that this is a non-terrestrial being and not a human spirit. Your thoughts...Lon

THE CLAPHAM WOOD MYSTERY

The Clapham Wood Mystery is the name given to a collection of unusual events which are associated with Clapham Wood, West Sussex, England, resulting in the area developing its own lore in popular culture. Events have included reports of people making unusual sights or experiencing unusual phenomena, and of family pets disappearing or sickening. There have also been several human deaths associated with the location.

Since the 1960s the area has experienced a rash of UFO sightings, reports of people experiencing nausea or the sensation of being pushed by unseen forces, or of witnessing patches of strange grey mist developing suddenly on pathways through the woods. Some people have also reported a strong sense of being followed. Studies with a Geiger counter have revealed slightly elevated levels of background radiation in the area, which is surprising since the area is situated on chalk which is normally low in radiation due to a lower level of Potassium 40. Early photographs of the area appear to show a large crater or depression within the woods, although the area is now more heavily forested and difficult to search.

In 1975, several reports, including some in the national press, were made of pets going missing in the area. Initially, two dogs were said to have disappeared without a trace, a third to have vanished but later reappeared suffering from an unidentified illness for which it had to be euthanised. After news of these three cases became public, other dog owners came forward claiming that their pets had experienced agitation in the woods.

Four deaths have occurred either in or close to the woods and have since become part of the lore surrounding it. The first death was in June 1972 when police officer Peter Goldsmith disappeared while hiking in the region. His body was discovered 6 months later. The second death was that of Leon Foster whose body was discovered in August 1975. He had been missing for 3 weeks. The third death was of Reverend Harry Neil Snelling, the former vicar of Clapham. He disappeared in October 1978 and his body was not found until 3 years later. English coroners ruled open verdicts in all three cases. Tim Withers was jailed for all four murders after he was found guilty. In September 1981, Jillian Matthews - a homeless schizophrenic - disappeared. Her body was discovered 6 weeks later. She had been strangled and sexually assaulted.

In their 1987 book The Demonic Connection Toyne Newton, Charles Walker and Alan Brown claimed that Clapham Wood had been used by a satanic cult called the Friends of Hecate (FoH). Part of the book dealt with an incident in 1978 when Charles Walker is said to have been contacted by an initiate of the group, who claimed that it was responsible for the sacrificial slaughter of dogs and other animals. The man said that the FoH planned to use the wood for at least another decade before finding other locations, and he claimed that people in high places were involved, and would tolerate no interference in the group's activities. Walker claimed that the cult was later forced to leave the area due to a combination of press attention and a storm, known as Great Storm of 1987, which damaged large tracts of the wood the year that the book was published. - en.wikipedia.org / www.the-spi.co.uk

Fortean / Oddball News: The Virginia Blob, Witch w/ 21 Sex Organs and Giant German Sinkhole

THE VIRGINIA BLOB!

theregister - Baffled passers-by have discovered a large, bizarre, blob-like lifeform floating in an artificial lake in Virginia. As there appeared no way in which the slow-moving, four-foot "mysterious blob" could have got into the lake naturally, the thing's discoverers - theorising that it must have come from above - have dubbed it the "alien pod".

Reportedly the "pod" was discovered by office worker Tracy Collier while out walking her boss's dog by the manmade lake in City Center at Oyster Point, a development in Newport News, Virginia.

“The lake is behind our office," says Collier's excellently-named colleague Charles Schmuck. "Tracy was walking by the lake, saw the object, and asked everyone else to come out and take a look.”

It was another colleague, Dale Leonart, who came up with the extra-terrestrial angle on seeing the lifeform.

"It has to be an alien pod," he stated authoritatively - though later reportedly adding that alternatively the thing might be "some type of sponge".

The puzzled office workers decided to call in expert help from boffins at the local Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences (VIMS). They sent an email with photos attached (see above) which read in part:

The object is about 4 feet in diameter. It has moved about 6 feet down the shoreline in the last 24 hours. It 'jiggles' when the waves in the lake hit it… when we prod it, it seems to be spongy feeling… The texture appears to be that of a rock with algae spots on it — it is brown and yellow, with a pattern of some type.

Sadly the VIMS experts pooh-poohed the alien landing theory. After a heated internal debate, they identified the blobaceous lakeside intruder as a very large colony of Pectinatella magnifica — aka the "magnificent bryozoan".

According to the boffins' description:

Colonies of Pectinatella magnifica feature a surface layer of adjoining "rosettes" — each with 12-18 animals or "zooids" — around a central jelly-like mass that is 99% water. The colonies can be free floating or attached to a piling or other submerged object. One study even showed that young colonies of P magnifica can actually move on their own by coordinated pulsing of the individual animals.

VIMS prof Carl Hershner says that the blobby hive-jelly creature eats algae and thus is “actually a good thing to have around, despite its looks. It's not a sign of bad water quality, and it doesn't hurt fish. It can clog pipes, though, and it will be smelly if it’s removed from the water.”

NOTE: seems to be related to the bryozoan 'blobs' found in several North Carolina sewers a few years ago...Lon

Young Ghana Witch Has 21 Sex Organs

peacefmonline - An 18-year-old student at Begoro District of the Eastern Region became the centre of attraction at the powerful house of Professor Aziz Sabo at Kukukorusan, near Suhum when she allegedly confessed having 21 female organs.

According to the self-confessed witch, her organs contained scorpions which she uses to woo big men including some notable politicians and businessmen to bed but later led them into all sorts of problems.

Throwing more light on how she acquired the witchcraft powers, she noted that her uncle gave the spirit to her through food at a tender age of four. She alleged that same night after retiring to bed, the uncle came calling her spiritually to accompany him to their place of meeting which she did.

She was later initiated into the witchcraft world and given the powers to destroy men with the 21 vaginas. With that power, she started having sex at the age of 12 years and woos men with her beauty and charm. She claims, she also destroyed her own biological mother’s business and turned her into a complete beggar.

According to the student, her power of destruction came to an end recently when her mother went to town and brought the powerful lucky soap, a product from Professor Aziz Sabo.

Meanwhile, two elderly women and a 15 year old girl have also been exposed at the shrine when they confessed that they are also engaged in witchcraft. They claimed responsibility for so many road accidents resulting in deaths especially in the Eastern Region.

NOTE: I could only hope, upon seeing 21 vaginas, her partners would have second thoughts. That must be some powerful ju-ju in order to pull that off...Lon

Giant Hole Opens up in German Town

spiegel - A giant crater 20 meters deep opened up in the German town of Schmalkalden on Monday. No one was hurt. Authorities say the landslide was caused by natural factors rather than mining.

A gaping hole 30 meters (98 feet) in diameter and 20 meters (65.6 feet) deep opened up in the eastern German town of Schmalkalden early on Monday morning. An empty vehicle plunged into it but no one was hurt, even though the chasm is in the middle of a residential area.

A total of 25 people were evacuated from six houses and soil is continuing to crumble from the edge of the crater, police said. Wolfgang Peter, a resident, said he had been woken by a roaring sound at 3 a.m. on Monday morning. "First I heard the rushing of water and then it sounded as if a dozen gravel trucks were being emptied," Peter told the regional newspaper Thüringer Allgemeine.

He went outside to find out who was carrrying out roadworks at that time of night and found himself standing on the edge of a giant crater right next to his house.

'Natural Cause' Likely

Ralf Luther, a regional official, said 10,000 to 12,000 cubic meters of soil had slipped. A line of garages right on the edge of the hole is at risk of plunging into it and cracks have appeared in nearby houses. Luther said residents were lucky not to have been hurt.

Experts are at the scene to find out what caused the hole. The environment and agriculture minister for the state of Thuringia, Jürgen Reinholz, said: "I assume that there is a natural cause for the landslide." He ruled out that salt mining could have been the cause.

A spokesman for the ministry said the region is prone to landslides because of its geological makeup and pointed out a similar case in the town of Tiefenort where five houses became uninhabitable when a two-meter deep crater opened up in January.

Pentagon Building System For Massive E-Mail Privacy Violation

ACLU - Here we go again. Earlier this month the Pentagon announced a new effort to build a system aimed at allowing it to scan billions of communications in order to detect "anomalies" in people's behavior that will predict who is about to snap and turn into a homicidal maniac — or, perhaps, leak damaging documents to a reporter.

Citing the case of Maj. Nidal Hasan, the Army psychiatrist charged with killing 13 people in Fort Hood, Texas, the Pentagon's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) wants to try to identify, before they happen, "malevolent actions" by insiders within the military. (See coverage by Wired, CNN, or Government Security News.)

The new project is called ADAMS, for Anomaly Detection at Multiple Scales, and anyone who remembers the battles over the Bush Administration's "Total Information Awareness" (TIA) program may be experiencing a major flashback right about now. TIA, also a DARPA project, was based on a vision of pulling together as much information as possible about as many people as possible into an "ultra-large-scale" database, making that information available to government officials, and sorting through it to try to identify terrorists. Eventually shut down by Congress, it was probably the closest thing to a truly comprehensive monitor-everyone "Big Brother" program that has ever been seriously contemplated in the United States. And many of the problems with TIA are equally present with this ADAMS project. Continue reading at Pentagon Building System For Massive E-Mail Privacy Violation

Italian Mayor Imposes Ban on Illness

BBC - The mayor of a small town in central Italy has issued a controversial official edict ordering citizens not to fall ill.

Alberto Bambini, left-wing mayor of Acquapendente, said he wanted to draw attention to a decision by the regional governor to close the town's hospital.

From 1 January 2011, the town will have little more than emergency care.

The mayor said people should avoid any sickness or disease needing hospital treatment, particularly if urgent.

Acknowledging he was acting "provocatively", he warned that anyone who falls foul of the town by-law did so "under penalty of being forcibly transported to the Belcolle Hospital" some 30 miles away, "or of being fined in proportion to the seriousness of their pathology or disease".

Mr Bambini has also ordered fellow citizens to avoid any behaviour that could jeopardise their health, advising them not to leave their homes too often or practise any sport.

He told the BBC he was aiming to "turn the spotlight on the problems citizens in this area have".

The mayor said he had acted after an incident involving a group of mayors and Lazio regional governor Renata Polverini.

According to Mr Bambini, when a delegation of Lazio mayors affected by the cuts requested a meeting with Ms Polverini in late September, they were prevented from entering the regional headquarters and the Italian military police, the carabinieri, were called.

The mayors were later seen individually by the regional governor, he added.

Acquapendente's mayor has also threatened to request the town's annexation by the nearby Umbria region, because he believes Rome absorbs all the resources of the Lazio area.

Reports say Lazio has the biggest deficit in its health care budget in Italy.

While Italy's health care is respected worldwide, the government has had to cut its public budget considerably in the wake of the financial crisis.

Fortean / Oddball News: Paranormal Warfare, NYC ET Commission and Russian Sorcerers

How Ghosts, Superstitions, and Vampires Are Used For PsyOps Warfare

io9 - Military psy ops aren't limited to leaflets, propaganda broadcasts, and Korean pop music. In the past, the US military has played on their opponent superstitions of vampires, ghosts, and astrology. Here are some strange examples.

In World War II, US forces exploited the Nazi's predilection to put stock in superstitions and the occult. The Rand Corporation's 1950 memorandum "The Exploitation of Superstitions for Purposes of Psychological Warfare" details how pseudoscience connoisseur Joseph Goebbels counteracted Allied attempts to strike fear into the superstitious strata of the German population.

Another curious incident noted in the Rand document occurs in Italy, where British military created a giant manikin to scare rural residents. A large, shambling creature was assembled to freak out superstitious locals.

It is worth noting that Jasper Maskelyne did have a penchant for embellishment. The US military however pulled a similar tactic in the 1950s, when Major General Edward G. Lansdale spearheaded the rumor that an asuwang was loose in the Philippines. In Filipino mythology, the asuwang is a winged, vampiric witch that has a hankering for unborn fetuses. The US military was battling Communist Huk rebels and concocted possibly the only covert operation in human history to stage a vampiric attack. Lansdale recalls:

To the superstitious, the Huk battleground was a haunted place filled with ghosts and eerie creatures. A combat psy-war squad was brought in. It planted stories among town residents of an Asuang living on the hill where the Huks were based. Two nights later, after giving the stories time to make their way up to the hill camp, the psywar squad set up an ambush along the trail used by the Huks [...] When a Huk patrol came along the trail, the ambushers silently snatched the last man of the patrol, their move unseen in the dark night.

They punctured his neck with two holes, vampire-fashion, held the body up by the heels, drained it of blood, and put the corpse back on the trail. When the Huks returned to look for the missing man and found their bloodless comrade, every member of the patrol believed that the Asuang had got him and that one of them would be next if they remained on that hill. When daylight came, the whole Huk squadron moved out of the vicinity.

Similarly, the US military imitated ghosts when fighting the Vietcong. Operation Wandering Soul was an attempt to rattle Vietcong by playing tapes of "ghost" soldiers who had fallen in battle. This propaganda campaign relied on the Vietnamese belief that if a body isn't interred near its corporeal home, the soul will wander the earth. US forces blasted eerie recordings of disembodied souls on the ground and air. A February 1970 account in The Tropic Lightning News described the recording as an effective means to shake up Vietcong forces:

If you were a Wolfhound of the First Battalion, 27th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, and were at Fire Support Base Chamberlain on the night of February 10 you might have sworn the place was being haunted by poltergeists, ghosts that is. The moans, groans and weird sounds began at eight that night, a likely time for the cloudlike forms to reveal themselves. Of course, ghosts are nonexistent, or are they? In this case the ghosts and weird sounds were furnished by the Sixth PSYOP Team and the S-5 Section of the 1/27th Wolfhounds who were conducting a night mission at Chamberlain. With the help of loud speakers and a tape of ‘The Wandering Soul,' a mythical tale of a Viet Cong gone to Buddha, the mission was a success.

The Wandering Soul is a tape about the soul of a dead Viet Cong. It describes the wandering of this soul about the countryside. The dead VC tells his comrades to look at what has happened to his soul and that he will never be at rest, always wandering,' said Captain William Goodman of Philadelphia, the battalion S-5. ‘Buddhists believe very strongly that if they aren't properly buried and properly mourned, their soul will wander through eternity,' added First Lieutenant Peter Boni of Boston, the officer in charge of the Sixth PSYOP Team. ‘We play upon the psychological superstitions and fears of the enemy. The method is very effective," Boni said.

Those actually playing the tape were less sanguine about its efficacy. In fact, helicopter crews reported receiving heavier fire when playing the Wandering Soul tape and would even use it goad Vietcong ground troops on. One swiftboat reserve lieutenant even recalls how the Wandering Soul tape got their boat pelted with rockets, so they opted to blast Tina Turner instead — their boat didn't take fire when blaring The Queen of Rock 'n' Roll in the middle of the night. For a fascinating history of the Wandering Soul initiative, check out Sergeant Major Herbert A. Friedman's article on Psy Warrior.

NYC ET Commission?

aolnews - New York City is home to practically every ethnic group under the sun, and if one UFO researcher gets his way, it will soon be host to every extraterrestrial species in the universe.

Michael Luckman, author of "Alien Rock," has shifted his time from writing books to writing ballot initiatives -- specifically one that, if passed, would create an ET Affairs Commission. The panel would consist of seven volunteers who would meet twice a year to gather the most compelling evidence regarding the existence of extraterrestrials and UFOs and post it on the city's website.

The initiative is almost identical to one being considered by Denver voters, but while that city's altitude makes it closer to outer space than New York, Luckman believes there's no contest as to which burg ETs should visit first.

"New York is the media capital of the world," Luckman told AOL News. "UFOs don't visit that often, but there have been some extraordinary sightings. Muhammad Ali was training for a fight with George Foreman and running in Central Park when he saw a UFO. It was a mother ship and out of that came a smaller ship.

"John Lennon saw one as well. He was with May Pang, his girlfriend at the time, and yelled at it, 'Stop! Take me with you!' "

Getting signatures for any ballot initiative isn't easy, but Luckman believes New York's large size will actually make it easier to collect enough to make an impact.

"Because New York is larger than Denver, I think it's an easier task to get signatures," he said. "The news media is extremely interested in this. Nothing says it better than the reaction to the recent UFO sightings in the Big Apple. Some may have been balloons set off by schoolkids, but there is something going on."

Assuming the initiative passes and a commission is formed, Luckman says one of the first duties will be considering sites where alien spacecraft might land. Although the New York Jets and the New York Giants both play in New Jersey, he doesn't think having ET go there is a good idea.

"It has to be in New York. If they landed in New Jersey, it would be like 'War of the Worlds,' " he said with a laugh. "I think Central Park is the most natural spot and I'd like to see space set aside as a landing site."

Luckman says another duty of the proposed commission would be appointing a liaison to act as go-between for the city and visitors from other worlds.

To that end, Luckman is concurrently working on another project called the Committee of 1,000 Humans to Welcome Extraterrestrials to Earth ("I know. It's long," he said).

The world leaders Luckman would like to serve on that committee include Barack Obama, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, but he also has other folks in mind.

"Muhammad Ali has had 22 sightings and is the most recognized person on the planet," he said. "Also, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Steven Spielberg, Larry King and [British pop star] Robbie Williams."

If Michael Jackson were still alive, he would presumably be on Luckman's short list. The author says the King of Pop once asked him to serve as a consultant on a project to build a high-tech alien landing pad in the Nevada desert.

Although the Denver initiative would require its commission to be funded by private sources, Luckman hasn't made a decision on how the New York panel would be funded. But he is still confident his initiative will pass muster in the Big Apple.

However, political experts familiar with the ways things are done in New York City are skeptical about the chances of the initiative ever getting to the voters.

Republican consultant Gerry O'Brien says the truth is, Gotham is "as unfriendly to its own constituents as they are to ETs."

"Unlike Western states, where voters can get initiatives on the ballot if they collect enough signatures, the only way that initiative could make on the New York ballot is if the mayor or a commission who answers to him places it there," O'Brien said.

Luckman isn't worried, possibly because Mayor Michael Bloomberg is already on his list of 1,000 people who should meet the ETs first when they land.

"The campaign will initially seek the support of the mayor," he said. "I have people inside City Hall who have expressed serious interest in the Extraterrestrial Ballot Initiative, but, right now, I can't comment more specifically. I wouldn't attempt this if I didn't think it was feasible.

"However, this is an opportunity for Mayor Bloomberg to promote extraterrestrial tourism in the Big Apple."

Russia Has 800,000 Non-Traditional Healers

UPI - Russia has more occult healers, sorcerers and wizards than it does professional doctors, an official said.

World Health Organization data indicate there are some 800,000 alternative healers in Russia, RIA Novosti reported Monday.

Andrei Yurevich, a spokesman for the Russian Academy of Sciences, said Russia has about 640,000 professional doctors.

The independent polling agency Levada said an August poll discovered about 20 percent of Russians use the services of non-traditional healers.

Russia saw an explosion in the belief of the paranormal and occult in the 1980s, with psychic healers Anatoly Kashpirovsky and Allan Chumak drawing audiences of millions, the report said.

Police Given Advice on Witches and Pagans

telegraph - It is Hallowe'en and the witching hour is drawing nearer, but don't be alarmed – police officers are on the case, having been issued with official guidance on how to deal with witches.

The advice is contained in a 300-page "diversity handbook" which gives officers a range of "dos and don'ts" when approaching followers of a range of religions and other beliefs, from atheism to Zoroastrianism.

Instructions include avoid touching a witch's "Book of Shadows", which contains their spells, or handling their ceremonial dagger.

The online handbook also advises officers not to jump to conclusions if they encounter a situation where a blindfolded, naked person is tied by their hands – they could merely have stumbled upon a pagan ritual, where such activities are normal practice.

"Witches have a Book of Shadows, which contains a handwritten record or diary of their personal progress as a witch," says the guide.

"Often the books have ornate covers, some have the title Book of Shadows on the cover, some don't.

"Any book can be used, but this book is regarded as private and special and should not be touched by anyone but the author. If it is possible to avoid touching this book then it is best to do so."

The guide, drawn up by the Metropolitan Police, Britain's largest police force, warns against interrupting a pagan ceremony.

It adds: "Some ceremonies include a blindfolded, naked participant, whose hands may be bound. This is in accordance with ritual and has the full consent of the participant."

Officers are also given advice on the ceremonial dagger, known as an athame, carried by witches and some other categories of pagan.

"When entering a witch's home do not touch an athame without the owner's permission," it says.

"During the Beltane Bash that celebrates the festival of Beltane (around the end of April), it has become a custom for some to wear athames in various sizes, sometimes sword size, on a belt, as a visible symbol of their pagan faith and to wear them in the streets.

"These are not intended to be used as an offensive weapon but might be misinterpreted as such."

Also provided is a glossary of pagan terms including the traditional greeting of "Merry Meet" and an explanation of a "wickening", or child naming ceremony.

It explains the dates and significance of pagan festivals such as Imbolc, Lughnasadh and Samhain – also known as Halloween.

The handbook also states: "Pagans have no religious dietary laws. However, many, though not all, witches are vegetarians."

In nine pages relating to atheists, the handbook gives advice on places of worship, Holy texts and prayer, stating: "There are no designated places of worship.

"There are no prescribed texts. Atheists have no prayers."

It adds: "Atheists have no dietary requirements other than those of the individual."

It also gives officers a handy guide to key atheist philosophers, and famous agnostic thinkers such as Bertrand Russell, Robert G. Ingersoll and Thomas Henry Huxley.

It warns: "Be aware that Atheists might feel offended by an assumption of faith," it warns.

As well as religions and beliefs, the book gives officers advice on dealing with teenagers, including a guide on "teen speak", to allow officers to communicate with younger members of the population.

The guide explains that "Talk to the hand 'cos the face is in Spain" means "I am not listening", while "Da bomb" means "great" or "excellent".

Witch's Hat Halts London Underground on Halloween

telegraph - Tube passengers had to walk through tunnels in the early hours of Sunday morning after the hat, which contained metal, was thrown on to the line at Chalk Farm, in North London.

A passenger is thought to have thrown the hat which cut out the power, halting four trains.

Hundreds of passengers were stuck on the trains for more than an hour before they were allowed to walk along tunnels to the nearest stations, London Underground said.

The four trains, three heading north between Camden and Belsize Park, and one northbound between Camden and Kentish Town, were stopped at 0040 BST.

"We apologise to passengers who were inconvenienced as a result of this incident, and would urge customers to exercise care and not to discard items on the railway," a spokesman for the company said.

"The metal part of a hat thrown on to the rails at Chalk Farm caused power interruption," London Underground said.

London Underground estimated that there were up to 90 passengers on each train trapped for between an hour and an hour-and-a-half.

Fortean / Oddball News: UFO Emits Light Beam, Witchcraft Atrocities and the Day After NYC Event

UFO Emit Beam of Light Over Soccer Field

MUFON CMS - Howland, OH, October 12, 2010:
At a soccer game yesterday in Howland, our team was sitting on the field stretching. I went to stretch my quads and laid on my back with my leg under me. As I stared up, I noticed how clear the sky was, and I could see the moon perfectly. Then, as my eyes scanned the sky, I noticed an object that I jokingly pointed out to my friends as "a Russian spy-plane!"

As I stared at this strange aircraft, I noticed that it was extremely high, and was white in color (against the blue sky), with the shape of a "Z". The closest shape above would be compared to a boomerang, but one side of the the object was facing the opposite direction of another point, giving the object a "Z"-like appearance. It was common knowledge that no regular aircraft took that shape or could fly at such a high altitude, moving so unbearably slow across the sky away from the moon (moving southwest). Also, the object made absolutely no audible noise, nor did it emit any type of visible exhaust. We discussed what it could be, while staring at this incredibly high, white, object. Right before our eyes, it began emitting a white light out of the western-most side of the object. The light did not flash, blink, or flicker; it was a constant white beam, but it was not bright, and was still barely noticeable.

After about 3 minutes of staring at this object, it had vanished right before our eyes. My reactional thought process was "there is no way...that could NOT have been a U.F.O.", as I tried to think of logical explanations for the sudden complete disappearance of this object, in the cloudless sky. I truly believe, after thinking about it all night, that this MUST have been a U.F.O.... no aircraft known to man would hover at such a high altitude, moving incredibly slowly, and vanish instantly.

Saturn's Moons Engage in Cosmic Paintball Fight

space.com - Five of Saturn's inner moons are engaged in a cosmic paintball fight, pelting each other with particles that leave bright, colorful splotches and may be the source of a Pac-man feature on one of the satellites.

NASA's Cassini spacecraft recently spotted reddish and blue splashes on the icy surfaces of Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione and Rhea. The colors are helping scientists map out how material travels between these moons of the ringed planet, and they're highlighting how "space weathering" can impact bodies in our solar system, researchers said. [New photo of colorful Saturn moon.]

The discovery may also help explain the mysterious Pac-Man heat pattern Cassini spotted on Mimas earlier this year, scientists said.

"The beauty of it all is how the satellites behave as a family, recording similar processes and events on their surfaces, each in its own unique way," said study lead author Paul Schenk, of the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, in a statement. "I don't think anyone expected that electrons would leave such obvious fingerprints on planetary surfaces, but we see it on several moons, including Mimas, which was once thought to be rather bland."

The research is detailed in a recent online edition of the science journal Icarus.

Enceladus: The aggressor

In the new study, Schenk and his colleagues used raw images taken by Cassini from 2004 to 2009, to produce new, high-resolution global color maps of the five Saturn moons.

The new maps incorporate images shot through visible-light, ultraviolet and infrared filters. Scientists processed the photos to reveal details the human eye can't detect.

The chief aggressor in the Saturnian particle paint war appears to be icy Enceladus, researchers said.

Mysterious ice geysers blast from the south polar region of this small moon. Particles from these icy jets make up most of Saturn's misty E ring, and they also appear to splatter Tethys, Dione and Rhea.

These three moons run head-on into Enceladus' spray as they orbit Saturn, and the gunk leaves a coral-colored stain on their icy surfaces, researchers said.

Enceladus' spray also tags Mimas, but it hits the moon's trailing side. This probably occurs because Mimas orbits inside the path of Enceladus — or closer to Saturn — while Tethys, Dione and Rhea are on the outside, scientists said.

But Enceladus doesn't emerge from the paintball fight unscathed: Some of its own icy material blows back onto the moon, dyeing parts of its surface bright blue.

Scientists aren't sure why the frost stains the other moons pinkish and Enceladus blue, but they're working on figuring it out.

Mimas' Pac-Man pattern

On Tethys, Dione and Rhea, darker, rusty reds paint the entire trailing hemisphere — the side that faces backward in the orbit around Saturn, scientists said. These colors are thought to be caused by tiny particle strikes from circulating plasma — an electrically charged form of matter similar to gas — in Saturn's magnetic environment.

In addition, Mimas and Tethys both sport a dark bluish band. The bands match patterns that might be produced if the surface were being irradiated by high-energy electrons drifting in a direction opposite to the flow of plasma in the magnetic bubble around Saturn, researchers said.

Scientists are still figuring out exactly what is happening, but the electrons appear to be zapping the Mimas surface in a way that matches the Pac-Man thermal pattern detected by Cassini's composite infrared spectrometer, Schenk said.

Schenk and his colleagues also found a unique chain of bluish splotches along the equator of Rhea that re-opens the question of whether Rhea ever had a ring around it. The splotches do not seem related to Enceladus, but rather appear where fresh, bluish ice has been exposed on older crater rims.

Though scientists recently reported that they did not see evidence in Cassini images of a ring around Rhea, the authors of the new study suggest the crash of orbiting material — perhaps a ring — to the surface of Rhea in the not-too-distant past could explain the bluish splotches.

"Analyzing the image color ratios is a great way to really enhance the otherwise subtle color variations and make apparent some of the processes at play in the Saturn system," said Amanda Hendrix, Cassini deputy project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "The Cassini images highlight the importance and potential effects of so-called 'space weathering' that occurs throughout the solar system – on any surface that isn't protected by a thick atmosphere or magnetic field."

Uproar Over Proposal to Dig Up Muslim Cemetery

thedailystar - The regular Thursday meeting of the Sidney, NY Town Board ended abruptly when chants for the town supervisor's resignation erupted from many of the more than 100 people in attendance.

The 7 p.m. meeting was held Thursday in a larger than usual room for a town board meeting.

The session followed nationwide controversy that began following a town board resolution in August to begin legal proceedings against the Muslim Osmanli Naksibendi Hakkani Sufi Order on Wheat Hill Road in Sidney Center. The town claimed that two burials in the private cemetery on its land were done illegally. A letter from the town's attorney, provided to The Daily Star on Wednesday, said that after review he decided not to take any action.

Town Supervisor Bob McCarthy previously said that the town board would seek to have the bodies disinterred. He refused to apologize during Thursday's meeting and at one point tried to deny his comments. When the question was pursued, he said, "I don't know if I did that. If I did, whatever."

The meeting started with town clerk Lisa French reading a statement from the board that said although McCarthy has done well for the town in economic matters, "We do understand that he may need to improve his people skills, and we, as a board will continue to encourage that."

The statement went on to explain that the board decided to look into the cemetery issue after a second burial permit at the Sufi order was requested in August.

It asked its attorney, Joseph Ermeti, to research the matter as part of the board's responsibility, to make sure that it wasn't later forced to take over the maintenance of a cemetery, as it had been before.

She also read the letter from Ermeti stating his findings.

While the board went through routine business, calls from several in the audience asked for a public comment session and others asked why the board would not apologize to the Muslim community for its actions.

A couple of audience members argued on the board's behalf, but most of the comments were against its position.

McCarthy repeatedly told the speakers they were out of order and several times threatened to have people removed.

Ermeti explained a new proposed local law that would address his concerns. This included the regulation of burials on private property with the exception of religious, nonprofit or municipal corporations. Under this law the Sufi cemetery would not be affected, he said.

During a public comment period at the end of the meeting, one of the Sufi property owners, Meryem Brawley, said that she was surprised that after the questions were raised, nobody from the town came to the Sufi order.

"Nobody called me, nobody sent me a letter," she said.

"You made assumptions about us that were not true," she said in asking for an apology, which was not given.

Ermeti said that before anyone came to the center, it had to be determined if there was a legal reason to do so. As far as he can determine, the cemetery is not in violation of any regulations, and the town will not proceed against it.

But in another exchange, Hans Hass, who has served as a spokesman for the Sufi order, asked McCarthy to at least say that the cemetery was legal.

McCarthy declined to say that.

The scene quickly deteriorated when longtime Sidney resident Floyd Howard said he has never seen such a "mess" in his community, caused by McCarthy's actions.

"You've brought shame (on the town)," he said.

Chants for McCarthy's resignation followed and he declared the meeting over about an hour after it began.

Afterward, Carl Cable, another longtime resident, praised McCarthy as the first elected official that he can remember who was not afraid to stand up for what was right.

Witchcraft Updates

Mozambican boy castrated for witchcraft

capitalfm - Two men were sentenced to 20 years in prison for cutting off a nine-year-old boy's testicles, penis and eyes to sell to a Malawian witchdoctor, Mozambican state radio reported Thursday.

One of the men was the boy's uncle, who lured him with crackers to go rat-hunting in woods near the Malawi border, while the accomplice hid nearby, the court sentence read.

One attacker covered the youth's mouth while the other hit him on the chest with a rock. They then cut off his organs and left him for dead, while one took the body parts in a bag to a middleman in Malawi, where they hoped to sell the flesh for about 560 dollars (400 euros).

The boy was discovered alive the next day and taken to hospital in Malawi.

"The crime they committed was horrible. The court condemns them to 20 years' imprisonment," judge Jorge Langa said, according to the radio report.

Many Mozambicans believe in witches who use human parts in remedies to cure diseases.

I've been posting to this website since late 2007; a website started because of my interest in UFO's since a up close 1991 sighting by myself (link in sidebar). And, if you check my sidebar, you will note a particularly skeptical attitude to `the whole UFO thing' from the stated government points of view, to the psychics predicting this and that, to `proof' via Videos of observers - to the hopeless and hapless media coverage of the whole saga - especially their hands off approach to interviewing the one man who has seen most of the FAA UFO reports for the past decade or so - Robert Bigelow.

Ok, so I woke up on the 13th thinking about the prediction of the UFO show; but, I run a UFO blog - how many other people woke up with similar thoughts? I can certainly say that it was a minimal number as this particular prediction seemingly had even less media attention than Blossom Goodchild's prediction of nearly the same date (Oct 14th was her prediction in 2008 - and BTW it would have been 10-14 in parts of the world). But, that said, perhaps many in NYC (it being a major city as the prediction said) did wake up with similar thoughts (this will be important in my speculations). IF even 1/10th of 1% of the metro area did have similar thoughts before hand (let's be conservative and just call the metro area 10 million) - that would be 10,000 folks. Fortean / Oddball News: Unicorn Sighting, Indian Witchcraft and Creature Night Attacks

Canadian Man Claims to Have Captured Unicorn on Video

smr.newswire - Amateur video depicting what could be one of the most elusive legendary creatures, the unicorn, has been captured on film by a Toronto resident. The video in question, shot by a local birdwatcher, Peter Hickey-Jones, shows what appears to be a white horse with a single horn on its head emerging from the trees in the Don Valley wetland.

Hickey-Jones brought the footage to the Ontario Science Centre to be analyzed by experts. The Science Centre is reviewing the footage frame-by-frame to determine whether Hickey-Jones’ claim is legitimate. With closer examination, Science Centre staff is hoping to establish whether or not a genuine unicorn sighting has occurred.

In the meantime, the Science Centre is asking the public to use caution if they think they see a unicorn. Do not make any sudden movements or attempt to use flash photography. Although legends of unicorns state that they are peaceful creatures, scientists worry that they may harm themselves or others if they end up on a road or highway. The Ontario Science Centre has set up an emergency unicorn hotline for the public for further information on unicorns or to report any unusual or questionable sightings.

Unicorn Facts

* Unicorns tend to avoid eye contact with humans and prefer to remain unseen
* Unicorns are known in European cultures as being fiercely beautiful creatures whose horns have curative properties
* The Asian unicorn, described as being scaly coated with the body of a deer and a flesh covered horn, was last seen by the Chinese philosopher Confucius
* The 1620 edition of Historiae Animalium, a book describing all the animals living on Earth, included a description of unicorns

Quotes

“I was trying to film a pileated woodpecker when I saw what looked like a bright white horse in the distance. When I got a little closer, I noticed the horn on its head. I’m not one to jump to conclusions but I’m certain beyond the shadow of a doubt that what I saw was a unicorn. I’m just glad I got it on film.”

Being Called a Witch in India is Not a Good Thing

telegraphindia - For Prabhat Ray, a grade-IV employee of the agriculture department in Kokrajhar, it is a nightmare he will never forget.

Ray and his family members were forced to flee their village in Balagaon Bashpara, 7km from BTC headquarters town of Kokrajhar, after he was branded a daina (wizard) by other villagers, under the patronage of some village youths.

Three women, including Prabhat’s wife, Batasi Bala, were assaulted, their hair chopped off and house vandalised.

The entire family, including Prabhat, his wife, their four sons, his sister, his brother and sister-in-law and their two children, are now on the run.

A case has been registered and the police today arrested one person in this connection.

According to the victims, some youths in the village accused Prabhat of practising black magic, releasing “spirits” in the form of two women and making them throw stones at villagers’ houses.

The villagers held a meeting last Friday and ratified the allegations made by the youths.

Prabhat was in his office and came to know about the allegations when he went home later that evening.

“I was in the office that day and came to know about the incident when I reached home in the evening. How can I be a daina?” he asked, still at a loss in trying to pin a reason behind such absurd allegations.

The villagers again called a meeting on Sunday and asked Prabhat to attend it.

Sensing something was wrong, his family and well-wishers advised him to stay away from the meeting and leave the village.

Not finding Prabhat in the meeting, the youths beat up his family members. They also forced his wife to sign on a blank sheet of paper.

The All Koch Rajbongsi Students Union remained silent on the matter. The All India Democratic Women’s Association, however, is helping the family.

Nashville Teacher Freaks Out In Classroom

newschannel5 - A teacher was removed from McGavock High School after a bizarre incident in a classroom that forced the principal to call parents and explain what happened.

The incident happened in Donald Wood's 11th grade algebra class Friday. Video shot by a student in class showed Wood throwing two tables, a garbage can and a chair.

The video starts with Wood telling a group of laughing students to "shut up."
Watch the video posted on YouTube. (Warning: some graphic language)

After standing quietly for about 20 seconds while students laughed, Wood waved his arms and said, "If you can be absolutely quiet… if you can shut your mouth… you can shut your mouth and you can listen in absolute silence… do you know why? Cause I have the absolute…"

"Power!" shouted one of the students.

"I've got it, and I know it," said Wood. "And guess who else knows it?"

Wood shouted something else that could not be understood before knocking a table to the ground. He then walked to the other side of the classroom and knocked over another table.

He shouted, "Do you know who started the fire? Do you know who started the fire in this school?"

A student said something inaudible, and Wood continued, "No… me!"

Wood picked up a metal trash can and slammed it to the ground. Students then began to leave the classroom. Witnesses said Wood then picked up a chair and threw it at the window - breaking the glass.

"He picked a chair and threw it on the ground – not at a student, but towards a student, but it was close – and that's when I got up and started walking away," said junior Joshua Jenkins. "Once everybody started running out he picked up a chair and threw it out the window and it shattered."

Several students could be heard laughing at the beginning of the 2 minute video, but then they realized it was escalating into a serious situation.

The disturbance was so loud students in nearby classrooms could hear the commotion. When the school resource officers got to the room, they handcuffed Wood and removed him from the school.

Witnesses said Wood shouted profanities and resource officers and students in the hall as he was escorted out. School officials said Wood suffered from an apparent nervous breakdown.

"[He was] very agitated, very scattered and he didn't make any sense," said Principal Robbin Wall.

Officials said Wood was removed from the school on a stretcher and transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital. Wall said he had never experienced anything like it in his 32 years in education.

"A chair had been thrown through the window, broke the glass and everything – and being honest, we are very fortunate that none of our students were injured or hurt," said Wall.

Wall sent out an automated message to parents to inform that about the bizarre situation that unfolded at the school. Part of the phone call said, "We had an incident in the school this morning, a teacher had a nervous breakdown in class."

Some parents took their students out of class for the day. Shannon Jenkins said her son was too shook up to go back to school.

"The reason I wanted to pick him up one just being anxious he is not going to learn anything else for the rest of the day," she said.

Joshua Jenkins said it would be tough to return to his algebra class on Monday.

"I expect to learn and get my education, [but] it was scary. It was definitely scary," he said.

Metro Schools officials said Wood was placed on administrative leave pending further investigation.

Wood has taught in Nashville schools for 17 years.

Creatures Continue Nocturnal Attacks in Namibia

allafrica - Stories of unidentified creatures that attack animals at night continue to do the rounds in the north. On the early morning hours of last Friday, a puppy that belonged to Lukas Fotolela, a resident of Ongwediva, died after it was savagely mauled by an unknown creature.

The creature allegedly entered the house through a small gate that was not properly closed.

"I was sleeping with an open window, when I saw a big white animal, with a black or brownish head forcing its way underneath the corrugated iron sheets where the puppies were sleeping. I tried to scare it away by hitting on the window but instead, it jumped towards me, wanting to attack me, but I quickly closed the door," explained Monica Simon.

According to Simon, the creature looked like a dog, but was bigger than a dog. She explained that the animal exuded a strong bad odour.

"After I closed the window, the creature went back to the puppies and killed my favourite puppy. I heard it making sounds as if it was chewing something. I thought it was eating up the puppy but when we woke up, the dead dog only had a bit of blood coming from its mouth. I guess it sucked its blood," said Simon.

The owner of the house, Lukas Fotolela, who worked until late that night came home to find his dog dead.

"When I came home, the incident had just happened. The small gate was open and the dog was already dead. The other puppy survived as it hid on the far corner of the corrugated iron sheets," said Fotolela.

Fotolela said he searched his yard but could not find the animal or its footprints.

For years now stories of unknown creatures that kill animals in the north, especially Oshana Region have been reported. Livestock especially goats and chickens have reportedly fallen prey to these creatures. Accusing fingers are pointed at individuals who are accused of being the owners of these animals in what is believed to be witchcraft cases. They only suck their victims' blood and eat the foetus from expecting goats.

Early this year, two dogs were killed by police officials and environment and tourism officers at Ehafo Village after the community there informed the officials that these dogs were responsible of the deaths of their animals.

The two dogs that belonged to an Oshakati businessman were killed after "mistaken" identity.

Artist uses kids to re-enact World Trade Centre attacks, Abu Ghraib torture, murder of Jon-Benet Ramsay, etc.

leaderpost - A photographer's image shows a boy with olive skin pretending to crash a toy plane into twin towers of blocks while another plays fireman in a rendering that has fuelled debate on parenting in an age of media saturation.

This and other provocative images in Jonathan Hobin's photography exhibit In the Playroom depict as child's play the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, child beauty queen Jon-Benet Ramsey's murder and other real life horrors ripped from the headlines.

Alternately decried as irresponsibly risking children's innocence to make a political statement and praised for inspiring new ways to speak to kids about life's ghastly moments, the 12 photographs - three years in the making - are on display at Ottawa's Dale Smith Gallery until Sunday.

"Kids have always taken what they see in life and incorporated it into their play. Play is a tool that kids use to process and understand the world around them," Hobin told AFP.

"All I've done is exaggerate those reflections of our world that kids see."

Critics accused the Ottawa artist of being a pervert, a racist, of being insensitive toward 9/11 victims' families and even a hater of twins for his staged photograph of the razing of New York's Twin Towers, "The Twins."

Most remarks, however, were directed at parents of the models - some of them professional child models, others children of Hobin's cousins and friends - for allowing them to participate in, for example, a torture scene in "A Boo Grave."

In it, a boy in his underwear and handcuffs is being attacked by a stuffed dog while a girl in green khakis points to a hooded child standing on a box with electrodes wired to his fingers.

"If you have teenage children who want to 'express themselves' in art, that is one thing. But volunteering your young (some in diapers) child to be photographed in a scene depicting blood or graves or people jumping out of the Twin Towers is wrong," said the popular Bad Moms Club blog.

"They don't know what political statement they are making (on someone else's behalf) and it's just wrong," said the parenting website.

"Maybe this is art, but creating art while risking your kids' innocence is irresponsible."

Amanda Etherington told local media she agreed to let her 5- and 7-year-old sons appear in a photo depicting the unsolved disappearance of U.S. teenager Natalee Holloway from Aruba because she felt it had artistic merit.

Another parent told the Toronto Star her son "had a good time and got to eat a few lollipops."

The most severe criticisms involved a Jon-Benet Ramsey photo with the model's panties around her ankles.

"Nobody likes to acknowledge sexuality in childhood, especially sexual exploitation," Hobin said.

Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography assistant curator Andrea Kunard notes that photographs of children often provoke "a great deal of anxiety."

"But by putting issues out there perhaps we can develop an awareness of what is at stake in certain subjects, and find ways of speaking about what we are seeing," she said.

A 2007 portrait by Montreal's Carlos and Jason Sanchez of John Mark Karr, who falsely confessed to the murder of 6-year-old Ramsey, provoked equal outrage.

"I agree that kids shouldn't see this stuff, but they are, and I'm trying to start a dialogue about that fact," Hobin said.

People often view childhood as "innocent and carefree," ignoring that many kids are dealing with death, illness, depression and other grim realities, he explained.

"There are lots of children out there who experience things that wake them up to the darker sides of life and they become very aware that not everything is going to be all right."

By presenting how a child might interpret Hurricane Katrina, the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Princess Diana's death and the Jonestown massacre, he said he hopes to debunk the myth that kids can be shielded from what is in the news.

"For a child who does not (yet) have problem-solving skills or life experiences" to deal with these issues, he said, "it must be incredibly terrifying, or maybe it's not, I don't know. All I know is that kids do see the images that we see and it has cultural implications."

"For someone who is young and growing in a post-9/11 world, their lives are shaped by those experiences."
