The Mt. St. Helens Elk Abduction

On February 25, 1999 three forestry workers in the Mt. St. Helens area of Washington State witnessed a daytime elk abduction. The preliminary report appeared in the MUFON UFO Journal of May 1999. The follow-up investigation reveals additional details and corrects inaccuracies. For purposes of confidentiality, all witness names are pseudonyms.

The preliminary investigation:

On a cold March afternoon with fresh snow up to their boot tops and a rolling valley before them, Peter Davenport (Director, National UFO Reporting Center) and Robert Fairfax (MUFON investigator) stood contemplating the account of an extraordinary event. Also at the edge of the bank stood Jack (landowner's representative) recounting details-albeit secondhand - of"the incident witnessed by members of a crew of Hispanic forestry workers: a daytime elk abduction.

As it turned out, Jack did not have all the particulars of the elk abduction correct, but we were not to find that out until much later. The 14 forestry workers could not plant seedling trees the Friday we arrived on site because ten inches of snow had fallen the previous night; therefore the crew had been given the day off. Hastily, an interview was arranged, through their employer, with three of the witnesses that same afternoon.

However, circumstances were not conducive to obtaining an accurate and detailed report. The meeting took place in a deserted parking lot of a wayside cafe. The cacophony of rushing traffic saturated the background, creating additional handicaps, since none of the three witnesses spoke more than a smidgen of English. Add to this picture a chill to the air, a limited time before sunset, and the requirement of telling the story through their boss, Emanuel, as interpreter to get an idea of the situation.

So here we were, seven of us, standing around the tailgate of a pickup truck for an extemporaneous investigation. Conducting separate interviews was not a viable option. Even though group interviewing conflicts with traditional investigative practice, we perceived little choice in the matter-we needed to take advantage of this opportunity. Fully aware of the pitfalls this method of investigation presented, we made sure we scrutinized the group dynamics. As far as we could tell, each held to a personal version without acquiescing to group decision or falling under another's influence. We were aware the participants had discussed the events among themselves extensively.

Emanuel's efforts at translating were laudable, but he was neither a trained investigator nor interpreter. He had not been present during the abduction, and the event floated somewhere outside his compass of understanding. This presented a challenge, since we were unable to understand for ourselves what the witnesses were saying. Compounding these difficulties, Emanuel seemed reserved in his translations. We knew he believed something strange had happened to his workers; however, we also suspected he was not ready to believe anything as exotic as an alien craft snatching up an elk.

The testimony waxed expansive and waned timid by turns-torn between the need to tell their story and the anxiety of raised eyebrows at the outrageousness of the tale they told.

We struggled with the narrative for 35 minutes. There were innumerable questions yet to ask, but the hour grew late and signals via body language suggested we close the interview and bid farewell. Though crippled by the language barrier, our initial interview provided a tentative and skeletal picture of the event. We wanted to schedule individual interviews for the upcoming week, but were told that the witnesses would be too busy planting trees for the next few weeks-an apparent conspiracy of wet weather and time of year.

Our wait was to last 57 days. Weighing on our minds during this time-out was the knowledge that the ponderous passage of time truncates a witness' sharp recollection of details-the blur factor. In the meantime we searched for another translator. Finding no suitable candidate in Washington, our eyes turned south to California where we knew an ideal interpreter resided. Ruben Uriarte, MUFON's State Director for Northern California, was the answer to our problem: he not only speaks fluent Spanish, but also excels in investigation. Could we recruit him and persuade him to fly to Washington and give us a hand? The answer was an enthusiastic "yes."

The follow-up investigation:

Ruben began immediately by phoning Emanuel and coaxing the witnesses' phone numbers out of proprietary insularity. Then, over the next few days he arranged a meeting with several of the witnesses at one of the worker's home.

Prior to Ruben's involvement in the case, another Washington MUFON investigator, Kathleen Andersen, joined the team. Kathleen began by cross checking other UFO events in the Mt. St. Helens area, seeking correlation and commonalities. She found cases, but no matches.

An early gray Seattle morning on the first Saturday of May found Kathleen packing her Jeep with food, with equipment, and with two investigators—Ruben and Robert. We headed south. When we arrived at the designated house, the scene was a bit awkward at first, due to a small crowd that included friends and relatives milling about. The witnesses were not quite sure if they wanted to be interviewed.

Fortunately, Ruben has the gift of setting people at ease, and within a short time the witnesses began talking. We were able to interview the witnesses both individually and together as a group. Later that afternoon, seven of us jumped into two vehicles and drove to the remote site in the foothills where the abduction had taken place. After 9 1/2 hours of investigation, we discovered that the preliminary report (as reported in MUFON UFO JOURNAL of March, 1999) needed amendment.

One of the witnesses, "Augustine", points toward where he saw the craft carry the elk. (credit: MUFON Journal)

The incident:

Shortly before noon on the last Thursday of February, 1999, fourteen forestry workers had just broken for lunch and were heading for the crew vehicle. Francisco and Augustine were nearly at the turnout (1900 ft. elevation), Manuel and two others were walking up the slope (about 1600 ft. elevation) from an old overgrown access road, while the rest of the crew was scattered, most midway between the two groups on the north-facing hillside. Francisco stopped to rest momentarily and watched the 14 elk of a herd that had been browsing all morning on a nearby slope northeast of them.

Then, out of the northeast, he spotted a strange moving object. The UFO, presumably, had already dropped some 70 feet down the height of the Douglas Fir trees bordering the dirt road and was now drifting over a hilltop. Skimming the clear-cut at brush top level and hugging the contour of the hill, the UFO appeared to be heading slowly toward the herd of elk. The object's initial location was approximately 800 yards distant and 200 ft. lower in elevation than Francisco's location.

At first Francisco mistook it for a bi-colored paraglider silently drifting in for a landing. The object had a strange, slow wobble. It showed red on the right half, white on the left. Francisco quickly realized that he was not seeing any type of parachute.

The object advanced toward the elk herd, staying close to the ground as if in a "stealth mode." When the elk became aware of the object, they bolted. Most tried running up the slope to the east, but the going was slow. A lone elk separated from the herd and headed north. The craft targeted the loner and moved in. Surprised and astounded, Francisco shouted to Augustine, "Look at that! Look at that!"

The clear-cut terrain prevented rapid movement for the animals: innumerable small deciduous trees had trunks cut about 18" above the ground, transforming them into sharp stakes pointing skyward. The trunks, bristling with branches, lay helter-skelter, presenting criss-crossing barricades. The lone animal could not run fast. The wobbling craft, moving no faster than between 5 and 7 mph (est.), easily overtook it.

Augustine had missed the pursuit but caught sight of the UFO as it took the elk. Down-slope, Manuel (crew supervisor) also witnessed the capture-500 yards distant. Nearly every other person's attention had been diverted toward the main group of fleeing animals. The craft moved directly above the female elk and somehow lifted it into the air without any visible means of support evident to the observers.

At this point, the animal ceased discernible movement-no kicking legs, no struggling body, and no indication of consciousness. The witnesses were amazed that the craft could lift the 500-pound animal. The "wing span" of the object measured not much longer than the length of the elk-about 7 to 8 feet. (The increase in size attributed to the craft in the earlier report seems to have been an illusion caused by a change in the craft's angle of tilt over the terrain at the point of capture.)

The captured elk, its head apparently against the ventral surface of the craft, and body standing stiffly upright, was lifted off the ground-just enough to clear the underbrush. The craft continued its slow, wobbling oscillation. The suspended elk moved likewise as if she were a solid metal sculpture welded to the craft. After the craft acquired (without pause) the animal, it moved away at the same slow pace, to the north, following the contour of the land. The elk's feet were observed sweeping circles, in conjunction with the craft's movement, just above the brush and tree tops.

Within a short time the craft approached the forest edge that defined the end of the clear-cut area. Apparently the craft did not stop or maneuver in time to avoid hitting some of the lower branches. Because of the considerable distance of the craft, the witnesses could not discern exactly what had hit the trees-whether the craft, the elk, or something else is unknown.

After hitting the branches, the witnesses saw it dip sharply and reverse direction before ascending vertically in front of the tree line. All three had the impression that the object had almost dropped the animal. Once above the tree top level, it moved over the forest margin and continued northward, dipped out of sight momentarily (perhaps still following the contour line of tree tops), then ascended at roughly a 45-degree angle into the distance until it was obscured by clouds.

Meanwhile, the rest of the herd had gathered into a tight huddle near the tree line, a normal behavior when a predatory threat is perceived. This herd consisted of cows and yearlings. The bulls at this time of year stay in bachelor groups at a higher elevation. The huddle lasted for two hours.

Reactions and emotions:

The witnesses shared their story among themselves at lunch. Several of the workers that had not sighted the craft expressed doubt that anything extraordinary had happened. Nevertheless, the reactions of both the elk and the excited co-workers evoked fear, generating a tense emotional atmosphere. The humans, analogous to the elk's behavior, consciously stayed in close proximity for the rest of the afternoon. Even those that doubted the story knew something had happened and were not comfortable working far from the rest.

Some, perhaps because of limited beliefs imposed by philosophical predisposition, clung to a tightly fenced world - trying to force all that they had heard into some familiar pattern, consistent with their reality. These were the fellows that had directed jokes and gibes at Francisco in particular. These skeptics continued planting seedling trees throughout the afternoon in a normal manner. This was in sharp contrast to those workers who feared a return of the object-they planted with heads continually swiveling skyward.

Craft Details:

Curiously, the witnesses were unable to agree on all the structural details of the craft. No one person had a complete description. Generally, all agreed on the length of the "wing span" (7-8 ft.) because they could compare it to the elk suspended beneath. Augustine perceived the relative depth to length, which measured out to 14 -18 inches. Manuel had the clearest perception of the width to length (5-6 feet) and the rear indentation.

All agreed that the UFO intermittently showed a red and a white patch on the surface. Francisco was sure it was a part of the craft's skin, but Augustine thought they were lights, and Manuel could not tell either way. They were unanimous that the red was dull (comparable to red pencil on a heavy textured paper), without luminescence, and that the white reflected like bright enamel paint. They were in agreement that red was on the right, white on the left, yet size, shape and position of the colors was not precisely known.

The craft's wobble caused the red and white to show intermittently. (See illustration of oscillation cycle: the top surface orients toward the observer for approximately one half of the wave revolution period.) The craft's color, other than the red and white areas, was described as gray. There were no reflections or surface characteristics that suggested the surface was metallic (note: it was an overcast day.).

The trio described the craft's complex motion primarily through hand movements. As close as can be determined, the UFO had an oscillatory period of about 2 to 2 1/2 seconds. This particular motion-apart from the object's forward motion-is difficult to describe except in terms of analogy. Peter described the motion as similar to that of a spinning coin as it is winding down and closely approaching a flat surface.

Francisco expressed regret that he had not taken time to carefully examine the details of the craft. He had been astounded and felt so much concern for the elk that his attention was focused on watching the animal. He realized immediately that if the object could carry off a 500-pound animal, it could easily abduct a per-son-a frightening notion that several members of the group later shared.

Puzzling Question:

The craft's estimated speed ("I could walk as fast as it moved."-i.e. approximately 5-7 mph) closely matches the estimated duration (3-5 min.) required for the observed distance traveled, as measured on a topographical map. With such a long sighting duration, an important question looms: "Why didn't more people see the craft with an elk suspended under it?" A number of reasons appear to answer this:

• When Francisco excitedly announced and pointed out the event, only Augustine was near enough to discern that the direction of his index finger pointed left of the herd. 14 panic-stricken elk, all weaving their way up slope, presented a sight that would be apt to draw a person's attention.

• Not everyone heard Francisco shout, and the other witnesses remained quiet.

• Within a very short time, the craft and herd (both moving away from each other) had separated enough that when bystanders visually searched for an assumed predator, such as a mountain lion, they did not scrutinize terrain far enough away from the herd to see the craft. They also spent time checking the immediate area around themselves for dangerous animals.

• All three witnesses to the craft were so astounded and absorbed with watching the UFO that at the time they did not think to question other spectators as to what they were watching.

Aftermath:

Most of the workers have developed a sudden interest in UFOs following this incident. Some related that their spouses did not believe the story. A few are nervous when working in the forest, especially when in the general area of the incident-they constantly search the sky. Francisco could not understand what he saw, and spent several sleepless nights pondering whether the object was some type of prehistoric animal or an extraterrestrial craft. All want answers.

An update to this case appeared in Filer’s Files #12-1999. Mr. Filer contacted Mr. Robert A. Fairfax to see if he had more details on the case. Part of Mr. Fairfax’s response follows:

Filer: "I am particularly interested in the description of the craft itself."

Fairfax: "So am I; this is one of the areas we will try and nail. There were two flashes described as the craft wobbled. A fluorescent magenta (top) and a white (bottom). These were apparently not lights but seemed to be areas on the surface. They were seen intermittently but again we will need to pin the details down along with many others."

Filer: "What was the direction of flight and the last known direction of travel?"

Fairfax: "It was first seen in the SE traveling toward the NNW. It departed slowly to the NE, and then made a near vertical ascent into cloud cover."

Filer: "Did they notice any kind of plasma, lighting, or electrical effects around the craft?"

Fairfax: "Possibly, the two bright color areas. The craft seemed to increase in size as it was capturing the elk. We’re trying to clarify that."

Filer: "Did the craft tilt as it changed direction?"

Fairfax: "Wobbling was reported that was more pronounced before direction changes, but we need to verify with more witnesses.

Filer" "Did they notice a hum or sound?"

Fairfax: "There was no sound.

Filer: "Did you notice the height of the trees or the approximate height and distance from picking up the elk to the top of the trees?"

Fairfax: "Yes, but no precise calculations have been done. It had plenty of room to maneuver and climb."

Filer: "Did they notice any windows?"

Fairfax: "There were no windows."

The Mt. St. Helen's Bigfoot Body Claims

A supposed photograph of a female Sasquatch taken in 1990 just west of Mt. St. Helens - Ray Wallace

A few day ago, legendary Bigfoot researcher John Green once again responded to the contention that the government is hiding a carcass of a Sasquatch that was retrieved from the ruins of the eruption of Mt. St. Helens:

"I’m a pretty seasoned researcher, half a century of it, and I have never encountered the slightest evidence suggesting that any level of government knows anything about Sasquatch, let alone having whisked corpses away by helicopter. Nonsense." - John Green

With all due respect to John Green and others who discount the accounts, I'm not pushing the information to the absurdity pile...well, at least, not for now. The notion that the U.S. Government would procure a Sasquatch body and not tell anyone doesn't seem too far-fetched to me. I'm not a conspiracy theorist by nature but I am fairly certain that there is a helluva lot of extraordinary and anomalous information that is withheld from the citizenry.

That said, along with recent claims regarding the Erickson Project DNA from two Bigfoot bodies, the following material should be read under advisement and 'taken with a grain of salt':

Sasquatch and the U.S. Government

Ray Crowe

In Cowlitz County, Washington at one of Ray Crowe's Western Bigfoot Meetings, someone brought up the topic of corpses of Sasquatch after the May 18, 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens in Washington State. The witness heard of two Sasquatch the Army Corps of Engineers had taken out of the volcanic devastation...two months after the initial blast.

Another attendee heard of a dredging operation of the Cowlitz River and that two bodies were found in the sand (probably same case?). A chopper flew them off.

Joe Beelart offered that the crane doing the dredging was from the Manatowaka Company and that the bodies were found two weeks after the Mt. St. Helen's blast of May 18, 1980. He suggested that somebody might want to track down the company and find out who was working the shift that the bodies had been found on.

During a tour of the devastation by helicopter in 1985, a Vietnam veteran helicopter pilot mentioned a similar tale to Bobbie Short saying there were military helicopters that flew out nets full of burned and semi burned elk, deer, bear and something with hairy charred arms hanging out of the drop nets. They were taken to a common pit where the bodies were burned to avoid disease and contamination of the rivers.

NOTE: immediately, you can see that there are several versions to the story. The International Bigfoot Society later issued the following report:

A large foot print found more recently near Mt. St. Helens

Fred Bradshaw report concerning dead Bigfoot bodies near Mt. St. Helens

My father worked for Weyerhauser Co. at Green Mountain ,WA, east of Vancouver. The site has security on their roads to check on the equipment and check closed areas to keep people out.

My father was working the day Mt. St. Helens blew up. He was at a meeting in Kelso, WA, and as he was a supervisor, when Mt. St. Helens blew it's side out, all heck cut lose.

My father was sent back to Green Mountain right away but like most he wasn't allowed to go very far because of the mud slide coming down the river. He did get to the town of Toutle, WA, on highway 504 off I-5. He and his crew were placed at different spots to watch mud flow and of course help people get out of the blast zone after the major blow up. He was sent to the area of Spirit Lake to keep people out.

When the second major blow up of the mountain came, my father and the other guy with him reported in, and they got out of there.

He was then placed in charge of the helicopter landing zone. It was his job to help keep people out of the landing zone and let aid crews in so they could care for injured.

Later, when all the people were out and bodies out, the National Guard was brought in to clean up. They hauled dead animals out that they placed in piles; deer in one, elk in another and so on. They were covered up with tarps and later burned.

But my father was placed in charge of one pile of dead that were covered and no one was allowed to go near. Armed U.S. National Guard personal were around this pile, and one day when they were going to move this group of bodies, and my father was very close to it and was told to keep his mouth closed. And when the tarps were removed he saw the creatures, some badly burned and some not. They placed them in a net and lifted them into a truck and covered it over. My father asked a guardsmen what will they do with them and he said study them or what ever...he didn't want to know. He said it's like other things you don't ask, and off they went . AND NO ONE KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM. My father and the rest were debriefed and sent home.

NOTE: of course, this is 2nd hand information but not too out-of-the-ordinary if the situation were known to be fact. In May 2010 I received an email from a man in southern Washington who stated that he had heard anecdotes from Yakima native people in reference to Oh-Mah or Sasquatch after the Mt. St. Helen's eruption. The most prominent account was that of a large male Oh-Mah that was badly burned, but still alive, that took refuge in an area east of the devastation near traditional tribal lands. He was told that government agents in military gear captured the Oh-Mah and airlifted it to an undisclosed location. I have no way of knowing if this is a true account but it does seem to suggest that there was an effort made to take advantage of the eruption in order to capture specimans either dead or alive. Flying Cryptid Sightings: Weird Bat-Like Creatures / Large Bioluminescent Birds

Model of Jeholopterus ningchengensis, a small pterosaur, or flying reptile, covered with thin fibers sometimes described as “fuzz”. Scientists believe the first stages in the evolution of feathers could have taken place in a species that was the ancestor of pterosaurs and dinosaurs.
Photo by Craig Chesek © American Museum of Natural History

I received the following inquiry from my friend Sunny Williams at Lights in the Texas Sky:

Hi Lon,

I thought I'd run this by you. I received an email from someone who had (years ago) witnessed a UFO and had possibly been abducted, along with a friend. They were children at the time and the UFO sighting was in a different state.

Lon, I can't make heads or tails of the little winged creature that ran across the road but the big ones remind me of some "Mothman" sightings. What do you think and have these things been seen in the Northwest?

This is the email Sunny forwarded to me (some spelling changes):

Subject: weird, huge, grey, furless, batwinged creature

We live in the pacific northwest (near Tacoma, WA) on many acres of mostly tree covered land with a creek. We have seen and heard a strange nocturnal, batlike creature. This thing is huge, light grey, skin with no fur, feathers or scales. It silently swoops down at you with giant bat wings. It makes a sound like a jungle monkey or bird, thus we refer to it as the monkey bird. We keep our chickens and goats, small dogs and cats safely housed at night, however two of our cats who sneaked out one night onto the roof disappeared without a trace of fur, blood or any evidence of what exactly happened. They wouldn't run away, and our outdoor watch dogs don't allow any coyotes or ground traveling predators anywhere near us. There were two of them together and they seemed fearless of me when they swooped down at me more than once and returned way up to the top of the highest trees. I couldn't get a look at the faces or eyes, mainly the huge grey batwings approximately 4' span are what I could see. They seem to show up every summer always after dusk anytime through the night. Locals don't seem to know about them. I might ask the local native American Indian tribes to see if they know anything about these creatures. Do you know of anyone else who might know what these things are? My brother and I saw another weird batlike creature two summers ago that was also quite bizarre yet not like these huge ones. We were riding our bikes at dusk and this black guinea pig sized thing with bat wings with holes all through the wings ran across the dirt road in front of us and under a bush. We don't know anyone who has seen anything like that either, but we DID see it. We see regular little, common bats all of the time after dusk so we know what they are like. We know owls, hawks, eagles and all of the normal flying creatures around here and these others are definitely out of the ordinary.

I offered an unlikely example (Eurasian Eagle Owls) as to what these creatures may be. I don't know of any bat species of that size that live outside of the tropics. Vampire bats, Great Bulldog bats and Flying Foxes can reach that size but I don't think that they could adapt to the climate of the Tacoma, Washington region where the climate is mild during summer when temperatures tend to be in the 60's and cold during winter when temperatures tend to be in the 40's...but some mammals can adapt to climate change.

Sunny received this follow up which she forwarded to me:

Thank you for checking with your colleague. Are the owl wings shaped like bat wings? Do they cling to the sides of the trees? Do they make a sound like "Hooooowhahhhhhh, aaahooooowahhhh! with the wah like the rolling of your tongue? Also the skin on the chest and wings was grey, mottled with some brownish color like a Mexican hairless dogs skin, and it had like visible blood veins kind of like protruding on the skin area. Where can we find a picture of the Asian eagle owl and find out what it sounds like? These might be moulting or sick or something. We would love to solve the mystery, and know more about them. Please let us know if you find anymore info. Thank you again.

Then again:

Thanks again for your help and research. It is truly appreciated. We are near Tacoma in a large forested area with a huge creek running all through it. We looked through and listened to all of the owl/eagle info and enjoyed it very much. I can say with certainty that these things were definitely not owls, eagles, vultures or anything like them. I guess no one would believe us unless they saw them and heard them. These are real. They have huge bat wings with the claw type thing on the top of the wing that helps them clutch the tree. It is true that they don't seem to flap like a regular bat would. They quietly swoop and glide. They sound like those jungle monkeys and you can see skin, no feathers, scales etc. I'm sure these have got to be categorized as unknown. Maybe someone has been doing some weird genetic experiments with wildlife and releasing them to see what the survival rate will be. Maybe an environmental mutation. We will try to ask others who spend time after dusk in the forests, (if we can find anyone like that these days) weather or not they have seen or heard anything like this. We will let you know right away if we learn anymore about this. Have a wonderful, safe 4th of July. Such a pleasure to communicate with you.

There have been somewhat similar sights in Washington state:

Man blames car wreck on prehistoric winged reptile

A 29-year-old Wenatchee man told police a pterodactyl caused him to drive his car into a light pole about 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

Wenatchee police cited the man with first-degree negligent driving. A breathalyzer test showed "a minimal amount of alcohol," said Wenatchee police Sgt. Cherie Smith.

Witnesses told police the man was northbound on Wenatchee Avenue and drifted into a southbound lane for less than a block. Oncoming traffic stopped and waited for the man to pass, Smith said.

He then totaled his car on a light pole, Smith said.

When police asked the man what caused the accident, his one-word answer was "pterodactyl," Smith said. A pterodactyl was a giant winged reptile that lived more than 65 million years ago.

The man was treated and released at Central Washington Hospital, hospital officials said. - hearaldnet

Two Eyewitness Accounts - Pterosaurs in State of Washington

The eyewitness described a pair of long-tailed “ropens” in Southwest Washington state, in a rural area that he desires to keep secret. Here is part of the testimony:

"I was riding my bike home from a friends house around 5 pm . . . I heard a strange noise . . . looked to my left, and on a wood plank fence were two of the biggest bird like creatures I could ever imagine! . . . the first thing I noticed was their heads . . . could they be dinosours? . . . They were Huge! There ft wrapped around a 2″x6″ plank . . . they’re heads I would have to say it was maybe 4ft long with the beak."

What follows is a secondary sighting of the same two flying creatures, in the same general area, by the same eyewitness, some time later:

"When they took flight they both still kept an eye back onto me. They only flew far enough to where I wouldn’t see them. They have slow head movements, as if they were rotating there heads with the heads in the downwards position." - www.modernpterosaur.com

Large Bioluminescent Birds

Also...I received the following email from a witness in northern Louisiana:

Hello - We live in a very rural area about a mile or less from a large lake. My husband and I have seen something we cannot classify into any known bird. We have only seen them at night and only during the warmer season months. There is an interstate being built to run through here and we saw the largest groups of them around the time most of the clear cutting was going on. They are scary big. It was large enough to raise the hairs on the back of my neck and make me hesitant on letting our animals out after dark. It was definitely larger than any bird I had ever seen. They are very dark in color, possibly black. It's difficult for me to give a detailed description of it, but my husband, who got a better look at the bird says it has a large beak, huge wingspan, and long tail.

What sets it apart from anything I have ever seen was that it had a lightning-bug type glow to it. The lighting trait of it was an irregular pulsating lighting that ran the entire length of its body in no type of pattern. It seemed to just hover wings unmoving (much like a kite does), but when it moves it is very fast. My first thought was that it was it had to be some type of military aircraft we have yet to learn about, but the more I have seen it the more animal like qualities I have noticed. Some reasons for that are the pattern of flight isn't repetitious, hovering without making a sound, and it seems to move as if it is on the currents of the wind. My husband has heard a bird-like squawking that drew his attention to them the first time he saw one, but I have not.

I was very skeptical at first, and was sure he had lost his mind. Being a military brat I was sure that it was just something new...like having the Harriers before we were ready to come out about them. It took me seeing whatever it is several times to believe what I saw wasn't something mechanical. I got on the internet and learned that similar descriptions (some spot on and some not even close) have been reported. I'm still not sure what it may be, and am shy to say anything about it to others. It sounds crazy to me. My husband and I are not the only ones to have seen it.

A friend of ours, a disbeliever, came out to see for himself. And, the father of a friend, when we mentioned we had seen something weird; said he never told anyone cause he was afraid that he'd be considered crazy. He told us that he was out on the lake by our place, in his boat at night, and had seen what he thought we had described to him. I am interested for someone more educated in birds and animals to come out and see if they can sight this thing, and find out if they could debunk or explain it. I don't know if it is a plane, maybe a glider of some sort, or an animal, but something is there. It may be able to be explained...maybe not.

The following information was found at Bioluminescent Pterosaurs in America

Glowing “pterodactyls?” In North America? Non-extinct? What could be more strange? Before dismissing the idea, consider some eyewitness sightings in North America, in light of reports of glowing pterosaurs in the southwest Pacific. But notwithstanding reports appear to be more numerous from some remote tropical islands, there are now enough sightings in North America to justify comparing them to sightings of featherless, apparently-bioluminescent flying creatures in the southwest Pacific.

Caribbean Sighting of Two Glowing Pterosaurs

A recent example is from a lady who was on a cruise in the Caribbean, with family members. Her daughter brought her onto the deck one night, anxious for her to see what was flying over the sea. The mother, who had not been drinking, saw two apparent pterosaurs, glowing and flying back and forth, sometimes closer to the ship.

Peter Beach’s Sightings in Washington State

According to the second edition of Live Pterosaurs in America, night sightings in the state of Washington included one by the college biology professor Peter Beach (2007).

“I went on a short trip to the Yakima River . . . because there was a [sighting]. We were unable to get a picture but we saw many . . . flashing lights. I would have assumed that [they] were fireflies but we [don’t] have them in Washington. . . . Many flashes were parallel to the river. The river at that point [has] a crook . . . and there were many fish . . . Prime hunting grounds for fish-eating birds. Only these things fish at night with bioluminescence. At first I thought I was just seeing shooting stars, but they were all parallel to the river and close to the horizon.”

The next year (summer of 2008), Professor Beach participated in another expedition at the Yakima River.

“During the short expedition I led with the O’Donnells, mid-July, we saw three hours of bioluminescent ‘shooting stars.’ The last hour was the most interesting in that there were two light blasts about 200 ft. apart, about 50-100 ft., above the river. The blasts were followed by screeches from about a dozen or so agitated nighthawks in the general area.”

During the second expedition, Professor Beach had a rather close encounter with a flying creature that he suspected was one of the ones that had been displaying the bioluminescence (although it was not glowing when it flew just over the professor’s head).

“The shape of the flying animal I saw was 3-4 ft. wingspan, 2-3 ft. long, with a bat-like wing. The neck/head was obvious but only in silhouette, and I could not make out a tail or feet. If the tail is thin, I probably was not close enough to see it even if it was there. The wing beat rate caused me to arrive at the size and altitude. The wing [beat] was similar to a Canadian Goose; a seagull beats its wings faster, a Nighthawk (wingspan 18 in.) faster still.”

San Fernando Valley, California, Sighting

“It was late in the evening almost dark . . . I was walking from my car to my house [in Sun Valley] and something in the sky caught my eye. My girlfriend also looked up and right away said is that a bat . . . What caught my eye was the bright radiation like light coming from the belly of this Pterodactyl looking animal. I seen it fly right above us maybe 150 -200 feet and this thing wasn’t no bat it was bigger with large wing span and when it flapped its wings it was kind of a slow lazy flap kind of gliding . . .”

Bigfoot Sightings: Spokane River, WA / Green Mountain Falls, CO

Click for video

It's not wreaking havoc like the Mississippi River by any means, or all those little creeks in southeastern Montana that are really screwing people on the Crow reservation, but the Spokane River has officially topped flood stage, and may just have flushed one of nature's most (only?) elusive (fictional?) man-apes into the open.

Yesterday, a YouTube user with the handle Samantha13950 posted a video that shows hikers wending their way down to the river. The video then goes dark and asks, "did you see it?" The video resets and plays again, in slow motion. Yep, sure enough. In the upper right corner — conveniently and beautifully illuminated by a ray of sunlight — a black, hulking man in a gorilla suit real effing sasquatch!!!???!! figure of unknown provenance walks through the frame:

Samantha13950 says on the post that no one noticed Big Foot until after they got home and checked the video (if they taped the entire lumbering hike that must have made for a less than exhilarating editing room sesh).

The Inlander has a team of 80 forensic videographers checking on the authenticity of this. In the meantime, though, can I just make a plea, on behalf of Big Foot, for humanity to step up its game?

The sasquatch have been playing hide and seek with us for millenia, and it's pretty obvious who's winning. I mean, they're always right there, crossing into a clearing — dappled sunlight creating a halo of light that may as well be a flashing "Big Foot here" sign — just as there's a camera rolling. - inlander

UPDATE: Samantha13950 says she isn't interested in "[getting] involved in a news story," but she did tell us where the footage was taken, and with what:

"I will let you know that we were in downriver park where the big hill starts to flatten out down by the river. The video is from my iphone. I was filming my friends slapping at ginormous mosquitoes and trying to get through some thick weeds."

There's no visible slapping of mosquitoes in the video, but it would be reasonable to edit that out when the focus of the video shifted from insects to a giant lumbering figure in the woods. The comment string on the video is already full of cryptid hunters debating the merits of the video, so we'll leave the analysis to them. (The best conversation happens between someone named BFResearchSE and someone named DistendedPerineum, for what that's worth.)

NOTE: another day...another Blobsquatch. What are your thoughts? Lon

Caught On Cam: Bigfoot In Colorado?

Is Bigfoot real? It’s a question that many have asked since the first sightings back in the 1800s when explorers began talking about an ape-like creature that walked like a man. Many scientists have brushed off reports that the creatures exists, and so far no real proof has been presented.

Daniel Masias hopes to be the one to prove Bigfoot’s exists. His fascination began in 1982 when he claimed to have seen two of the creatures near his Green Mountain Falls home one morning.

“In the winter, when there was snow, we noticed there were footprints. The prints didn't have shoes on them; they were just bare feet," he recalled. Masias described the creatures as hairy and less than 6 feet tall, but the footprints they left behind were not human-like. Masias said one creature has a foot span of about 12 inches, the other about 7 inches.

”So, not really big, about average human size," he said.

When asked why no one has seen these creatures or taken pictures with current technology, Masias said he thinks the creatures are coming through a wormhole, an intergalactic travel portal from one galaxy to another.

Masias isn’t the only one to have claimed to have seen Bigfoot. Ken French, a ranger for the Pikes Peak District, remembers seeing a strange creature near Centennial Point, near the summit of the peak. “I saw a dark uniformed color individual walking on the snow, and I stopped my tour bus and ask for binoculars,” recalled French.

He thinks the creature was about 1,000 yards away. "It was big and dark and it had a big gate, so it looked unusual to me.” French remembered that it walked like a person, but he felt it was odd at the time.

"It's not unusual to see people on a snow slope, usually on a ridge line walking, but you do see people up there occasionally, but it's usually a couple of people,” said French.

After the numerous sightings on Pikes Peak, ranger put up a Bigfoot crossing sign to warn visitors of what they could be in store for when they drive up to the 14,110 foot summit.

Masias is convinced he will get a picture of the creature, he thinks is Bigfoot. His motion-sensor camera already has snapped pictures that no one can explain, including one he said is an alien. - krdo - video available

MUFON CMS: Man Recalls USO Encounter / Blackhawk Helicopters Transporting Unknown Craft

MUFON CMS - Sabine River, Texas - 2/1/1976 - unedited: Hello, I am male, 43, father of 5 girls. I have started have very disturbing nightmares of an event that took place when I was a kid involving an underwater UFO. First let me give a little back story. I am from Texas and lived on the Sabine River. My Dad moved us out there when I was about 7 or 8. We had no electric or running water the first 4 years. We lived off the river and the land. I would wake up with my Dad early in the morning to go and check trot-lines. A trot-line is a line that has other lines attached to it with hooks and bait. This is to catch more than one fish at a time. I am sorry if you already know this, but so many people ask me what it is. One Saturday we got up about 4:30am or 5:00am to check for fish. We got in the boat like always and started with the first line. We were about halfway when I noticed a light under the boat. It was small about 4 to 6 inches across. My Dad noticed it too, he turn and yelled at me that I dropped the light. I knew I had not messed with the light, so I quickly scrambled around to find it. I found it and turned it on and shined it at my Dad. He was making his way across the boat to whip my tail, but stopped and look over the side at the light again. I am not sure how it happened but the water around the boat lit up so bright it was like daylight. The light was about 15 to 20 feet around the boat. It came close to the boat and stayed still for a few moments. I remember it was cold that morning but at that moment it felt like it was around 80 or so degress. Then bam it shot through the water faster than I had ever seen anything move. I watched for a few moments, by this time the day was getting a little lighter and I noticed a wake forming about a mile or so from the boat. It just rose up out of the water without a boat. It was a big wave like the ones barges make. I thought it was cool but My Dad looked like he was going to be sick. You have to understand something about my Dad, he was afraid of nothing, but he look like my little brother who was scared of the dark. I sat down and my father drove the boat as fast as it would go. When we got near the boat dock I was getting ready to tie the boat off, but Dad just drove the boat right up on the shore, which he forbade us to do because of cypress knee's. He got up and grabbed the 10 gal gas tank to bring to the house. It was almost funny. I remember thinking it is not that heavy, by now he had both hands on it and I could see the veins popping out in his arms, then it just let go and the tank came up hit him in the face and in the water he went. I just looked him puzzled as he dove past me grabbing my arm as he went. Now he was scaring me, this was so out of the norm for him I had to look a couple of times to make sure it was him. He dragged me to the truck, ran to the house to get the keys and we flew down the dirt road at a pace that almost killed us a few times. We hit the highway and drove the 45 minutes to my Uncle Dales house in about 10 minutes, how he did not get pulled over and thrown in jail I will never know. He jumped out, so I jumped out he turned and told me to get my ass back in the truck we were not staying. My Dad came out with my Uncle Dale who look just as puzzled as I felt. Dad jumped back in our truck and Uncle Dale followed in his truck. My Dad had to stop and wait for Uncle Dale a few times cussing louder each time. We finally get back to the river and Dad and Uncle Dale go over to the boat. My Uncle Dale had been a radioman in the Air Force so I guess my Dad thought he would know something. I had to stand back from the boat because my Dad was beside himself by now, but I saw them throwing something at the boat, so I eased up to see. They were throwing bolts at the boat and the bolts were sticking. They went back to the house to talk so I went over too the boat and started doing the same thing but when I tried to pull the bolts off I couldn't. I heard my Dad coming so I ran back to where I was playing at, so he would not whip me. I saw them take the boat and our other boat out in the river. I watch as they sunk the boat with everything in it including the engine. I was shocked. my Dad later told me if I ever told anyone about this he would beat me till I was dead, and I thought he would. My wife was the first person I ever told and only after he died. I would like to know if this has ever happened to anyone else. And the boat was an aluminum boat, which I learned many years later that aluminum is not magnetic. A lot of other weird stuff happened after that day, but I cant type it all so if you would like to speak with me my number is *(Phone number deleted--CMS/sg).

MUFON CMS - along I5, Washington near McChord AFB - 4/11/2011- unedited: Around 1:00 pm on day of sighting 2 chinook helicopters flew south along I5 corridor. Several Copters were in the area flying low making triangulation difficult. They were in the area around 30 minutes when a group of helicopters flying low, app 300' flew from the east heading west at a high rate of speed. They crossed I5 at the Green Hill exit, I think mp 76.

Three Blackhawks flew with a net slung between them, one in the lead two trailing, and two gunships after them with guns trained on the loaded net. The air speed was app 140mph limiting the sighting to several seconds per group. Two of the cargos contained disc shaped loads, 15' diameter. The third, not necessarily in that order contained a isocelles triangular shaped object, similarly sized to the Blackhawk copters.

It was reported by a neighbor that a convoy of deuce and a half trucks were seen going up highway 6 at around noon, heading east. Troops were seen inside one of the trucks.

At midnight an observer drove east on highway 6 app 10 miles. The road was void of traffic except for two Washington State Patrol cars parked together.

At midnight there was nothing in the air. I went up on a hill in Olympia and watched for 30 minutes at 1:00 am surveying a huge area and did not see anything flying. This is a main flight corridor for SeaTac, Portland International, and McChord Air Force Base. At this point you can clearly see the Olympia airport, flights out of McChord, and the flight corridor between Seattle and Portland.
