The Mt. St. Helens Elk Abduction

On February 25, 1999 three forestry workers in the Mt. St. Helens area of Washington State witnessed a daytime elk abduction. The preliminary report appeared in the MUFON UFO Journal of May 1999. The follow-up investigation reveals additional details and corrects inaccuracies. For purposes of confidentiality, all witness names are pseudonyms.

The preliminary investigation:

On a cold March afternoon with fresh snow up to their boot tops and a rolling valley before them, Peter Davenport (Director, National UFO Reporting Center) and Robert Fairfax (MUFON investigator) stood contemplating the account of an extraordinary event. Also at the edge of the bank stood Jack (landowner's representative) recounting details-albeit secondhand - of"the incident witnessed by members of a crew of Hispanic forestry workers: a daytime elk abduction.

As it turned out, Jack did not have all the particulars of the elk abduction correct, but we were not to find that out until much later. The 14 forestry workers could not plant seedling trees the Friday we arrived on site because ten inches of snow had fallen the previous night; therefore the crew had been given the day off. Hastily, an interview was arranged, through their employer, with three of the witnesses that same afternoon.

However, circumstances were not conducive to obtaining an accurate and detailed report. The meeting took place in a deserted parking lot of a wayside cafe. The cacophony of rushing traffic saturated the background, creating additional handicaps, since none of the three witnesses spoke more than a smidgen of English. Add to this picture a chill to the air, a limited time before sunset, and the requirement of telling the story through their boss, Emanuel, as interpreter to get an idea of the situation.

So here we were, seven of us, standing around the tailgate of a pickup truck for an extemporaneous investigation. Conducting separate interviews was not a viable option. Even though group interviewing conflicts with traditional investigative practice, we perceived little choice in the matter-we needed to take advantage of this opportunity. Fully aware of the pitfalls this method of investigation presented, we made sure we scrutinized the group dynamics. As far as we could tell, each held to a personal version without acquiescing to group decision or falling under another's influence. We were aware the participants had discussed the events among themselves extensively.

Emanuel's efforts at translating were laudable, but he was neither a trained investigator nor interpreter. He had not been present during the abduction, and the event floated somewhere outside his compass of understanding. This presented a challenge, since we were unable to understand for ourselves what the witnesses were saying. Compounding these difficulties, Emanuel seemed reserved in his translations. We knew he believed something strange had happened to his workers; however, we also suspected he was not ready to believe anything as exotic as an alien craft snatching up an elk.

The testimony waxed expansive and waned timid by turns-torn between the need to tell their story and the anxiety of raised eyebrows at the outrageousness of the tale they told.

We struggled with the narrative for 35 minutes. There were innumerable questions yet to ask, but the hour grew late and signals via body language suggested we close the interview and bid farewell. Though crippled by the language barrier, our initial interview provided a tentative and skeletal picture of the event. We wanted to schedule individual interviews for the upcoming week, but were told that the witnesses would be too busy planting trees for the next few weeks-an apparent conspiracy of wet weather and time of year.

Our wait was to last 57 days. Weighing on our minds during this time-out was the knowledge that the ponderous passage of time truncates a witness' sharp recollection of details-the blur factor. In the meantime we searched for another translator. Finding no suitable candidate in Washington, our eyes turned south to California where we knew an ideal interpreter resided. Ruben Uriarte, MUFON's State Director for Northern California, was the answer to our problem: he not only speaks fluent Spanish, but also excels in investigation. Could we recruit him and persuade him to fly to Washington and give us a hand? The answer was an enthusiastic "yes."

The follow-up investigation:

Ruben began immediately by phoning Emanuel and coaxing the witnesses' phone numbers out of proprietary insularity. Then, over the next few days he arranged a meeting with several of the witnesses at one of the worker's home.

Prior to Ruben's involvement in the case, another Washington MUFON investigator, Kathleen Andersen, joined the team. Kathleen began by cross checking other UFO events in the Mt. St. Helens area, seeking correlation and commonalities. She found cases, but no matches.

An early gray Seattle morning on the first Saturday of May found Kathleen packing her Jeep with food, with equipment, and with two investigators—Ruben and Robert. We headed south. When we arrived at the designated house, the scene was a bit awkward at first, due to a small crowd that included friends and relatives milling about. The witnesses were not quite sure if they wanted to be interviewed.

Fortunately, Ruben has the gift of setting people at ease, and within a short time the witnesses began talking. We were able to interview the witnesses both individually and together as a group. Later that afternoon, seven of us jumped into two vehicles and drove to the remote site in the foothills where the abduction had taken place. After 9 1/2 hours of investigation, we discovered that the preliminary report (as reported in MUFON UFO JOURNAL of March, 1999) needed amendment.

One of the witnesses, "Augustine", points toward where he saw the craft carry the elk. (credit: MUFON Journal)

The incident:

Shortly before noon on the last Thursday of February, 1999, fourteen forestry workers had just broken for lunch and were heading for the crew vehicle. Francisco and Augustine were nearly at the turnout (1900 ft. elevation), Manuel and two others were walking up the slope (about 1600 ft. elevation) from an old overgrown access road, while the rest of the crew was scattered, most midway between the two groups on the north-facing hillside. Francisco stopped to rest momentarily and watched the 14 elk of a herd that had been browsing all morning on a nearby slope northeast of them.

Then, out of the northeast, he spotted a strange moving object. The UFO, presumably, had already dropped some 70 feet down the height of the Douglas Fir trees bordering the dirt road and was now drifting over a hilltop. Skimming the clear-cut at brush top level and hugging the contour of the hill, the UFO appeared to be heading slowly toward the herd of elk. The object's initial location was approximately 800 yards distant and 200 ft. lower in elevation than Francisco's location.

At first Francisco mistook it for a bi-colored paraglider silently drifting in for a landing. The object had a strange, slow wobble. It showed red on the right half, white on the left. Francisco quickly realized that he was not seeing any type of parachute.

The object advanced toward the elk herd, staying close to the ground as if in a "stealth mode." When the elk became aware of the object, they bolted. Most tried running up the slope to the east, but the going was slow. A lone elk separated from the herd and headed north. The craft targeted the loner and moved in. Surprised and astounded, Francisco shouted to Augustine, "Look at that! Look at that!"

The clear-cut terrain prevented rapid movement for the animals: innumerable small deciduous trees had trunks cut about 18" above the ground, transforming them into sharp stakes pointing skyward. The trunks, bristling with branches, lay helter-skelter, presenting criss-crossing barricades. The lone animal could not run fast. The wobbling craft, moving no faster than between 5 and 7 mph (est.), easily overtook it.

Augustine had missed the pursuit but caught sight of the UFO as it took the elk. Down-slope, Manuel (crew supervisor) also witnessed the capture-500 yards distant. Nearly every other person's attention had been diverted toward the main group of fleeing animals. The craft moved directly above the female elk and somehow lifted it into the air without any visible means of support evident to the observers.

At this point, the animal ceased discernible movement-no kicking legs, no struggling body, and no indication of consciousness. The witnesses were amazed that the craft could lift the 500-pound animal. The "wing span" of the object measured not much longer than the length of the elk-about 7 to 8 feet. (The increase in size attributed to the craft in the earlier report seems to have been an illusion caused by a change in the craft's angle of tilt over the terrain at the point of capture.)

The captured elk, its head apparently against the ventral surface of the craft, and body standing stiffly upright, was lifted off the ground-just enough to clear the underbrush. The craft continued its slow, wobbling oscillation. The suspended elk moved likewise as if she were a solid metal sculpture welded to the craft. After the craft acquired (without pause) the animal, it moved away at the same slow pace, to the north, following the contour of the land. The elk's feet were observed sweeping circles, in conjunction with the craft's movement, just above the brush and tree tops.

Within a short time the craft approached the forest edge that defined the end of the clear-cut area. Apparently the craft did not stop or maneuver in time to avoid hitting some of the lower branches. Because of the considerable distance of the craft, the witnesses could not discern exactly what had hit the trees-whether the craft, the elk, or something else is unknown.

After hitting the branches, the witnesses saw it dip sharply and reverse direction before ascending vertically in front of the tree line. All three had the impression that the object had almost dropped the animal. Once above the tree top level, it moved over the forest margin and continued northward, dipped out of sight momentarily (perhaps still following the contour line of tree tops), then ascended at roughly a 45-degree angle into the distance until it was obscured by clouds.

Meanwhile, the rest of the herd had gathered into a tight huddle near the tree line, a normal behavior when a predatory threat is perceived. This herd consisted of cows and yearlings. The bulls at this time of year stay in bachelor groups at a higher elevation. The huddle lasted for two hours.

Reactions and emotions:

The witnesses shared their story among themselves at lunch. Several of the workers that had not sighted the craft expressed doubt that anything extraordinary had happened. Nevertheless, the reactions of both the elk and the excited co-workers evoked fear, generating a tense emotional atmosphere. The humans, analogous to the elk's behavior, consciously stayed in close proximity for the rest of the afternoon. Even those that doubted the story knew something had happened and were not comfortable working far from the rest.

Some, perhaps because of limited beliefs imposed by philosophical predisposition, clung to a tightly fenced world - trying to force all that they had heard into some familiar pattern, consistent with their reality. These were the fellows that had directed jokes and gibes at Francisco in particular. These skeptics continued planting seedling trees throughout the afternoon in a normal manner. This was in sharp contrast to those workers who feared a return of the object-they planted with heads continually swiveling skyward.

Craft Details:

Curiously, the witnesses were unable to agree on all the structural details of the craft. No one person had a complete description. Generally, all agreed on the length of the "wing span" (7-8 ft.) because they could compare it to the elk suspended beneath. Augustine perceived the relative depth to length, which measured out to 14 -18 inches. Manuel had the clearest perception of the width to length (5-6 feet) and the rear indentation.

All agreed that the UFO intermittently showed a red and a white patch on the surface. Francisco was sure it was a part of the craft's skin, but Augustine thought they were lights, and Manuel could not tell either way. They were unanimous that the red was dull (comparable to red pencil on a heavy textured paper), without luminescence, and that the white reflected like bright enamel paint. They were in agreement that red was on the right, white on the left, yet size, shape and position of the colors was not precisely known.

The craft's wobble caused the red and white to show intermittently. (See illustration of oscillation cycle: the top surface orients toward the observer for approximately one half of the wave revolution period.) The craft's color, other than the red and white areas, was described as gray. There were no reflections or surface characteristics that suggested the surface was metallic (note: it was an overcast day.).

The trio described the craft's complex motion primarily through hand movements. As close as can be determined, the UFO had an oscillatory period of about 2 to 2 1/2 seconds. This particular motion-apart from the object's forward motion-is difficult to describe except in terms of analogy. Peter described the motion as similar to that of a spinning coin as it is winding down and closely approaching a flat surface.

Francisco expressed regret that he had not taken time to carefully examine the details of the craft. He had been astounded and felt so much concern for the elk that his attention was focused on watching the animal. He realized immediately that if the object could carry off a 500-pound animal, it could easily abduct a per-son-a frightening notion that several members of the group later shared.

Puzzling Question:

The craft's estimated speed ("I could walk as fast as it moved."-i.e. approximately 5-7 mph) closely matches the estimated duration (3-5 min.) required for the observed distance traveled, as measured on a topographical map. With such a long sighting duration, an important question looms: "Why didn't more people see the craft with an elk suspended under it?" A number of reasons appear to answer this:

• When Francisco excitedly announced and pointed out the event, only Augustine was near enough to discern that the direction of his index finger pointed left of the herd. 14 panic-stricken elk, all weaving their way up slope, presented a sight that would be apt to draw a person's attention.

• Not everyone heard Francisco shout, and the other witnesses remained quiet.

• Within a very short time, the craft and herd (both moving away from each other) had separated enough that when bystanders visually searched for an assumed predator, such as a mountain lion, they did not scrutinize terrain far enough away from the herd to see the craft. They also spent time checking the immediate area around themselves for dangerous animals.

• All three witnesses to the craft were so astounded and absorbed with watching the UFO that at the time they did not think to question other spectators as to what they were watching.

Aftermath:

Most of the workers have developed a sudden interest in UFOs following this incident. Some related that their spouses did not believe the story. A few are nervous when working in the forest, especially when in the general area of the incident-they constantly search the sky. Francisco could not understand what he saw, and spent several sleepless nights pondering whether the object was some type of prehistoric animal or an extraterrestrial craft. All want answers.

An update to this case appeared in Filer’s Files #12-1999. Mr. Filer contacted Mr. Robert A. Fairfax to see if he had more details on the case. Part of Mr. Fairfax’s response follows:

Filer: "I am particularly interested in the description of the craft itself."

Fairfax: "So am I; this is one of the areas we will try and nail. There were two flashes described as the craft wobbled. A fluorescent magenta (top) and a white (bottom). These were apparently not lights but seemed to be areas on the surface. They were seen intermittently but again we will need to pin the details down along with many others."

Filer: "What was the direction of flight and the last known direction of travel?"

Fairfax: "It was first seen in the SE traveling toward the NNW. It departed slowly to the NE, and then made a near vertical ascent into cloud cover."

Filer: "Did they notice any kind of plasma, lighting, or electrical effects around the craft?"

Fairfax: "Possibly, the two bright color areas. The craft seemed to increase in size as it was capturing the elk. We’re trying to clarify that."

Filer: "Did the craft tilt as it changed direction?"

Fairfax: "Wobbling was reported that was more pronounced before direction changes, but we need to verify with more witnesses.

Filer" "Did they notice a hum or sound?"

Fairfax: "There was no sound.

Filer: "Did you notice the height of the trees or the approximate height and distance from picking up the elk to the top of the trees?"

Fairfax: "Yes, but no precise calculations have been done. It had plenty of room to maneuver and climb."

Filer: "Did they notice any windows?"

Fairfax: "There were no windows."

UFO Encounter - Harwinton, Connecticut - 7/15/1995

Computer simulation based on witness sketch - the simulation uses the estimated size, altitude, and distance. (credit: MUFON CT / Mark Cashman)

On July 15, 1995 at 2:45 PM near Harwinton, Connecticut two witnesses (husband and wife) observe a large metallic disk about 500 feet in diameter at an altitude of about 200 feet, from a distance of about a half mile. The object is traveling 65-70 mph. The shadow of the object had previously crossed the road. A group of independent witnesses at another location did not observe the object. The combination of circumstances allow close constraints on the observation so that size, distance, altitude and speed can be estimated even without a triangulation.

The couple were going around 30 mph and saw a "huge thing over the road". It cast a shadow on the ground far ahead. The wife did not think it cast a shadow on a house past the object. She guessed it was a football-field sized object. It was a lens shaped disc, horizontal, silver-grey with a band of darker or black panels across the approximate vertical center of the upper half. She estimated 10-20 panels on the visible side. The object flew across the field of view and disappeared past the trees on the horizon. No problems with the vehicle were noticed. The witness believed that people having a party outside a white house on that road (to the R) past object must have seen it, but they never got up the nerve to check. They saw the people looking up and pointing after the object was gone. Witness seemed sincere, stressed desire for anonymity. Husband owns business and would not want to be publicly connected with a UFO sighting. Was relieved to tell the story. Said her and husband had discussed it with a few people who told them they were crazy or drunk, and finally they stopped talking about it, but it always bothered them. Witness was familiar with some aspects of UFO lore, including "missing time" (didn't have any).

First Interview 3/21/99 - Husband - (Investigator 1)

The witnesses were a young couple in their thirties. The husband was a self-employed carpenter, schooled originally as a game warden (there was a hiring freeze on when he graduated (Ohio Department of Natural Resources?), so he ended up in construction). The wife was an emergency room nurse. Their home was a moderately large dwelling, with a high ceiling. Renovations were in progress, and the husband informed me he was doing them as time permitted. He had put in some large windows the previous year. Other than normal mass media SF (i.e. a Star Trek movie) on video, there was no sign of a library, UFO or otherwise, or any special interest in SF or UFOs. The witnesses were casually dressed and their home was well-kept (except for the obvious renovation in progress).

The sequence of events as reported by the husband (interviewed by the above named investigator), is as follows (including information gleaned from reenactment):

1. The witnesses had been fishing at a quarry which took water from a nearby river. They had left the quarry after fishing for an hour with little luck, and were driving down the road that leads directly from the quarry. The vehicle was an older pickup truck used by the husband in his business. The windows were down waiting for the A/C to start working, and the radio was on. It was a very hot day, sunny, partly cloudy, and the air was still (the husband mentioned early that the mosquitos had been biting and that he thought that would not have happened if there had been wind). Their speed was about 20-30 mph.

2. After some distance (0.35-0.40mi) they had passed beneath a power line that crossed the river and the road, and had entered into an area where the trees were further back from the side of the road, when the husband observed what appeared to be a large shadow crossing the road. He looked up from the shadow and saw a large metallic disk over the trees to the left. Because the small rise of the road ends about 0.1-0.15 mi ahead of this position, followed by a dip where the shadow would have been invisible, the shadow could have been no further ahead. The witness had looked at the vehicle clock shortly before, so the time was close to 2:45 PM.

3. The witness reported that everything felt like slow motion. The object seemed to hover (though this may not be reliable because of the subjective time issue). The radio was not affected nor was the clock. The object passed slowly and smoothly over the road on a course approximately perpendicular to the road. The object's apparent size (closely matched between both witnesses) was about seven inches at a distance of two feet (prior to measurement, the witness estimated about 1 foot). The elevation angle was measured about seven degrees. The time taken to pass from initial appearance to disappearance behind the trees to the right was about 10-15 seconds. During this part of the event, the witness let off the gas and coasted but did not brake. The speed was sufficient to coast over the small rise, and the object was almost directly to the right of the vehicle as it disappeared over the trees. The object initially appeared to be no more than a hundred feet above the trees.

4. The witness stated that he believed that the object was the size of a jumbo jet, and was at very close range. The surface of the object was a non-specular slightly metallic grey ("battleship grey silvery", roughly similar to a silvery spray paint), and was apparently faceted (reminded the witness of stealth fighter geometry), with all facets of roughly the same size as the glass panes. No reflection of the sun, the sky, or the ground was observed. There was no sound, and no flame or smoke. The trees were not affected by its passage. There was no sound, including any roaring or wind, or the sound it might make passing through the air. No gondola or basket was observed. A band of what looked like panes of dark glass (like that on a skyscraper - not mirrored, but dark smoked) crossed the upper portion of the disk roughly halfway between the rim (the widest diameter of the disk) and the top of the dome. These facets were neither recessed nor protruding. The bottom was visible, and the witness saw no areas which might be openings, panels concealing landing gear, etc. The witness had grown up in Ohio and had seen blimps all the time. This object did not resemble a blimp.

5. After the object was gone, the witnesses continued to drive. They turned off the road they were currently on, and on their way back to the highway, passed a house where a gathering was underway (about 15 people in the yard). The witness believed that these people might have seen something because they seemed to be looking up. Also, the witness believed that the object would have had to have passed nearly over the house or within view of the gathering. As we shall see later, this is not necessarily true..

The witness selected Haines Shape Classification T2 on top of T6 with B6 for the bottom. The windows mentioned (D10) are between the T2 and T6. Cashman metal sample A (silvered cardboard) was selected as most closely resembling color and reflectivity.

The witness did not remember the sun location clearly, but believed it was to his left, and perhaps slightly behind him at the time of the sighting.

The witness mentioned that they had not discussed it even among themselves for a year. He stated "when you were kind of scared and you know no one's going to believe you anyway, why tell anyone?.. but we didn't even discuss it among ourselves, and that kind of throws you for a loop... why not?"

The witness seemed uneasy with being forced to come to the conclusion that this was not an observation of anything normal. When he said "it wasn't an airplane, it was some kind of... ship" the "ship" was said with an uncomfortable sort of bark. This also happened when he pointed out that there were no flames "you know, some sort of thruster, or something".

When discussing the description, the witness disclaimed artistic ability - said he had tried to draw it before and failed. However a reasonable sketch was obtained. The band shown was black glasslike in appearance, while the rest of the object was a soft (diffuse reflector) silver color.

He stated he had watched UFO shows since and they had never seen anything like what they had observed, though one night when he was in the shower, she came in and told him she thought she had seen it on a program.

The witness repeatedly marveled at the size of it, and seemed at a loss for words to describe it when attempting to spontaneously account for why it seemed so strange. He was shocked that he could not see anything apparently responsible for making it move or fly "it seemed to defy all law".

The witness was not familiar with the layout of the sighting location on a map, but could find his way there. He and is wife independently confirmed that he had learned of the area (which is definitely obscure) from a friend who had fished there.

During the reenactment, the husband recalled seeing the object pass over the trees to the north above the house to the right.

At the time of the observation, the house with the party (316 Campville Rd) was stated by the witness to be white, but in 1999 it was blue. This may help to confirm the date (Note: a 7/29/99 visit determined that the house had never been white. 20 years ago it had been yellow for a period followed by black with white shutters, followed by the current color (siding)). Also, note that the witness remarked (even though there was no deciduous foliage at the time of the site visit) that the trees had grown noticeably larger in the four years which had passed since the sighting.

The witness stated that he felt like "one in a million" having seen this. He thought, because of its size, that everyone should have seen it. However, he, remarked on how remote the area was, and that maybe even something that large might not be seen.

Assessment Of The Witness

The witness appeared sincere and sincerely puzzled by the event. A natural fascination with the event was coupled with fear of ridicule. The witness was glad to have gotten the event off his chest to someone who took it seriously. Leading questions were not followed unless they matched the original statement. The witness did have some areas of confusion. The largest discrepancy was in the position of the vehicle at the onset of the sighting (about 0.1 mi at most). This was resolved when the two witnesses were brought together for the final measurement portion of the on-site visit.

First Interview - Wife - (Investigator 2)

I received an e-mail from Investigator 1 during the week of March 8 requesting my assistance in interviewing two witnesses to an event that allegedly occurred in July of 1995. The reason for the delay in reporting the sighting was due to the fear of ridicule and the lack of knowledge as to where and to whom the event could be reported. The couple had recently watched a television interview with Investigator 1 and decided to contact him with their story.

We traveled to the home of the witnesses, a married couple in their mid 30's, in Cheshire CT on Sunday March 21, 1999. We arrived and began our separate interviews of the couple at 1230 hours. What follows is the initial report of my interview with the wife, age 35 who is employed as an emergency room nurse.

After a day of fishing in a pond or quarry past the end of Valley Road in Harwinton, Connecticut, the husband and wife left because they were "all fished out", hiked a fair distance back to their pick-up truck, and began the 30 minute drive home. She remembers it to be approximately 2 PM when they finally reached the truck, and that it was a hot July day in 1995 with a mixture of sun and clouds. They began their trip home driving north on Valley Road from the spot where the vehicle was parked at the intersection of Wildcat Hill Road. The windows were down because it was hot and it took some time for the air conditioning in the truck to begin to function.

After travelling north on Valley Road at approximately 25 miles per hour, for just over one half mile (at a point where the view to the north and north east becomes unobstructed by trees and where a large house on a hill to the right comes into view), both people, while looking through the windshield of the truck, observed an object moving from left to right. The object was moving slowly, made no sound, and was moving just above the trees.

The wife describes it as just clearing the trees at the top of the nearest hill just beyond (north of) the house. She described the size as much larger than the width of the road with either end of it extending over the trees on either side of it (her subsequent drawing indicates that it was twice the width of the road or approximately 60 feet). Wife said she observed the object for 5 to 6 seconds, all the while exclaiming to, and talking back and forth with her husband, until it disappeared over the trees out the right window (to the east) of the truck.

She estimated the size as 16 inches at arm's length [however, the on-site measured value was about 7 inches at 2 feet, Investigator 1], the color as a flat/dull silvery-grey-metalic that neither reflected sunlight nor any clouds (she selected metal sample "A" as the closest to matching the object). She does not remember the object casting a shadow.

The shape was an oval/disk with a rounded bump on top and 7 or 8 shiny, black, mirror-like panels placed horizontally around the middle just at and above the centerline. These panels were curved as if to conform to the curvature of the object, and were separated by darker black lines or narrow areas, which clearly distinguished them from one another. She selected shape [Haines Shape Classification] M-16 (inverted) with rounded edges as the closest to what she actually observed.

After this observation they continued north for another half mile, then turned west onto Campville Road, the connecting road to Route 8. After another half mile driving up the other side of the valley from where they first sighted the object, they passed by a house on their left. There was an outdoor gathering of some sort and several people were looking skyward and pointing to the sky in the area from where the witnesses had just come.

Subjective Questions

After the "official" portion of the interview I asked her several questions.

Q: Are you religious?

A: Yes, a devout, practicing Catholic.

Q: How did you feel when you saw this object, and why did you refrain from talking about it with your husband for more than a year after it occurred?

A: "I was raised as a Catholic and I know it says in Ezekiel… but I just never believed in any of this stuff and it really freaked me out and I didn't want to talk about it. If God wanted us to know about it he'd let us know about it…freaked me out and for a few years and up until a year ago I wished to God that I'd never, ever seen it. I really mean it because it threw me into a tailspin".

Q: Are you sad or disappointed that you saw it now?

A: "I would have preferred that I wish that I had never seen it…there is a certain belief system that I have and I would prefer not to have been one of the ones to have seen something".

Q: Would you like us to keep you appraised if the progress of our investigation and provide you with a copy of the final report?

A: "No. Finally I was able to tell someone about this and now it is off my chest and I can be done with it. It's your problem now and I can forget about it".

[Bruce later mentioned a comment from the wife, where she stated that she had a friend who had told her of a sighting, and her response had been angry - "why are you lying to me?" The wife was apparently quite chagrined to now have such and experience and realize that her friend had been unjustly accused.]

Initial Conclusions

Based on my initial interview with this witness, there is little doubt that she and her husband experienced something on that day in July of 1995. I made several attempts to trip her and gave her ample opportunity to contradict herself and she passed on all counts. I found her testimony consistent and her demeanor credible. Especially telling were her answers to my questions after the "official" interview had been completed. With tape recorder still running, we settled back into an informal conversation that revealed, in no uncertain terms, that she was not only confused by the event, but also wished that it had never happened. - MUFON Connecticut / Mark Cashman

Recent UFO / Anomalous Reports

Hey Lon,

I know that you are always interested in some of the weird and interesting anomalies that exist amongst us mortal beings on this third rock. That is why I thought you might be interested in this photo that I captured of a strange object flying thru the skies of west Nashville, TN. I know that most people are usually too busy to look up and take notice of the skies above. But, what most people don't understand... is that if they only knew why lurks above them in the dark hours of night... and the daylight of day, then they would have the most profound awakening to the shocking reality... that would move the very foundations of their own souls!

We are not alone!
And the skies above...are alive!

Starting about a month ago, I became aware of these strange glowing lights in the sky when I looked out the second story window of my house in Bartlett, Illinois. Living here for 19 years, and knowing that O'Hare Airport is in that direction, I thought nothing of it. I thought they were probably just planes or helicopters. It was strange, as I had not seen anything like this before, though. That's what stuck out at me. These objects stayed in one relative spot. They moved, but not erratically. Just slightly around each other. I noticed they would stay in patterns. Either these objects would form a triangular configuration, or take a linear configuration. I thought this was something pretty strange if they were conventional aircraft. I also noticed that they don't blink. They glow, and slightly flicker. These objects would appear out of nowhere starting around 6 PM CST, and they would stay for hours, usually ending around 9 PM CST. I have never seen these objects during the day. On February 14, 2010, I decided to try to record them (for a second time), as they appeared at dusk instead of the usual night time, and it would be easier for my camera to capture them. After recording the video, I uploaded it to my computer. I took a screenshot of a scene in the video, put it into Photoshop, and used the "emboss" effect to see exactly what shape these objects took. What I saw really surprised me. They were showing up as spheres. Six of them, in a triangular pattern with three smaller ones in the middle. When my sightings first started, there were only 3 of these lights visible. As time has progressed, these sightings have become more and more frequent, with more objects. Now almost nightly, I can see at least 5 of them, and usually no more than 8. As I have stated, these objects will stay for hours on end. I have watched these objects closely hoping to catch them doing some crazy UFO-like behavior, like zooming back up into space, but all they do is kind of "fade out," and I lose sight of them. This does not happen EVERY night, but close to it now. Seeing these objects make me more confused than anything. If they are planes, how are they visible for so long? Why don't the lights get bigger as they get closer, or smaller as they get farther? If they are helicopters, why do they glow instead of blink or flash? Why do they show up in the EXACT same spot so frequently, and hover for so long? Why don't I ever see them move anywhere, except around each other in a relative manner? I will attach the original screen shot taken from my video, the embossed version of the screen shot, and the video itself so you can decide. You can also check out the link at the end of this to see my discussion with other people, who have confirmed the lights are not a radio tower or something of the like. What they are remains a mystery to me.

MUFON CMS - Almont, Michigan - Fall 1990 - unedited: Thought I would resubmit this sighting because it sounds like the Romeo sighting report you have posted in 1988. I would be interested in finding out from those whitnesses If my sketches looked similar to the craft they saw. If you can contact them and ask I would appreciate it. There have been so many instances of really great close up sightings in the Michigan thumb area. It really is an intrest of mine. I believe *(Name deleted--CMS/sg) was involved in quite a few of them.
I did report this about several years ago to *(Name deleted--CMS/sg), I'm not sure why I waited so long but for some reason it really started to occupy my thoughts. We had several emails about it and he seemed very interested, he eventually referred me to someone from the Michigan Mutual UFO Network, he emailed me a few times and that was it. To tell you the truth I just felt better telling someone that had an interest in it, but I'm not sure if the guy either believed me, or just wasn't interested. I will give you a brief summery, to me this was the most unusual event in my life and I still think about it daily.

It was the fall of 1990, I was in my home in Almont, MI. That time of year it gets dark quite early, it must of been around 8:00 p.m., "the times are now just an approximation". My son, who at the time was around 12 came running in the house saying there was a UFO right outside our house. Let me add at this point I was not one that believed in UFOs. I went outside and my son pointed south and upwards and said look! The funny thing was at first I didn't see anything, but I did notice it was unusually dark, then I noticed a very dim light, I suddenly realized that the reason it was so dark was that there was a huge craft right over our driveway. It was at tree top level and was moving north at a very slow pace, "approximately a slow walking speed". There was a very distinct humming, exactly like a large transformers hums, but you could feel the sound the resonance was so low. There was a very dull light in the middle and as it traveled down or driveway I made out a row of windows around the craft, the windows looked very large. I remember walking down the driveway with my son, then the next thing I remember is standing out in the field north of my house still looking at the UFO, when suddenly it went from approximately 90 or 100 ft straight up in the sky to where it was a pinpoint of light. It just looked like another star. This happened in under a second. We continued to watch it for quite awhile when it took off in a northwesterly direction like a meteor and was gone in a second. There are allot of things I can describe if your interested, but this is the basic part.
I don't feel like I was abducted, but I honestly do not remember how I got from my driveway and then in the field. I ask my son about it and he remembers things the way I do, but what I find unusual is that 1. I didn't really focus on it that much after the initial day it happened until a few years ago. 2. My son doesn't seem as interested as I am, even though he is a very intelligent guy. I was a flight simulator instructor in the air force and I have allot of knowledge regarding aircraft. This will always go down as the most bizarre day in my life. By the way, it seemed like I was being watched by someone in the window, but it was like you could only make out a shadow. I am now fascinated by UFO's and I know that there out there. Please, if you have any more questions feel free to ask. Almont is about 20 SE of Brown City. I have never seen another unusual craft. This was defiantly a UFO, there is no other explanation for it, I am the type of guy that checks his facts, there is nothing on our planet that I am aware of that could do what I saw! The pilots would be dead just from the G forces. It surprises me that there have been so many incidences in that area and I never heard about it. From my house to the field was approximately 1000 feet, " you would think that with what was going on, I would remember that sort of distance". I am not really concerned weather anyone believes me or not, unless it is someone that is suppose to investigate this sort of thing. They really need to have an open mind and check the facts. The last few years I have gotten increasingly interested in this subject and there have only been a few incidences that I have read about where people have been as close as I was. I guess I am just intrigued. It really fascinates me!
I was so close, 90 ft. The funny thing about it was I didn't feel threatened, In a weird way I felt like it was something from our future, as bizarre as that sounds. I feel that we need to have confidence in our instincts, I felt like I was on display and really being watched. One thing I didn't mention and to this day I am not sure why I didn't act, is that I am a professional photographer. What a dummy! the shot of a life time and I didn't even think about it. This is another thing I cant explain, I take my cameras everywhere with me. The first ten years, I would occasionally ask my son if he remembered everything about that night and he would say yes, but not really want to talk about it. It seemed like more of a dream. WHY? Neither my son or I am the type of person not to act on something so significant, an event of a life time. Another factor about that night was the route the craft was traveling, right down my driveway. My power lines go right down the drive and sometime that winter I had to call Edison out, they told me that the wires were completely bare" no insulation at all", and had to replace them, including the transformer. I am not sure if it relates, but I have read stories about these craft using power lines.

UFOS Over Kentucky

dailyindependent - Larry and Cathy Martin weren’t expecting to see an unidentified flying object as they delivered copies of The Independent early Wednesday morning, although both say they had plenty of time to watch the oblong object with red-and-green lights hovering in the sky before it suddenly gained altitude and flew off to the west.
A spokesman for the Greenup County 911 Center said a call was received shortly before 2:30 a.m. Wednesday reporting a UFO “moving and darting around” in the western sky with a “pulsating red light.”

The Martins, who have been delivering The Independent for six or seven years, said they noticed police officers looking into the early-morning sky and became curious about what they might be looking at.

“We were passing papers and saw the police in the parking lot at the animal clinic (Guardian Animal Medical Center in Flatwoods) with binoculars. I asked what they were doing and they said they got a UFO?call,” Larry Martin said, explaining the officers then handed him their binoculars so he could see for himself.

“I saw a red-and-green light, not moving at all. It was kind of long … oblong,” he said, later describing the object as being shaped like a cigar. “I watched it for probably 10 minutes.”

His wife, Cathy, provided further details.

“The object was hovering for about 10 minutes. It was oblong with red-and-green lights. It was too high to be a helicopter and not high enough to be an airplane,” she said. “It then rose up real fast and took off to the west and it was gone completely out of sight. We didn’t know what it was. The police said they didn’t know what it was either.”

While she doesn’t deny the object might have been a weather balloon or some other more common object, Mrs. Martin said she is certain she would have recognized the object if it had been an airplane or a helicopter, adding her husband is a Vietnam veteran who would have easily identified the object if it had been a chopper.

“He said there was no way it was a helicopter,” she said with certainty.

John Parker at the Ashland Regional Airport in Worthington said that facility was “closed and locked up tighter than a drum” at that time in the morning, and added he was personally unaware of any aircraft in local airspace that might have been confused for an unidentified flying object.

An air-traffic controller in the tower at Tri-State Airport said, “Not that I’m aware of,” when asked if he had any knowledge of anything that might have appeared to be a UFO in the local skies early Wednesday morning.
