Photos: Recent Crop Circle Formations

A trio of intriguing crop circles have appear recently. The top image is that of a crop circle found on July 13th, 2010 at Guys Cliffe, near Old Milverton, Warwickshire. The middle image was taken at Clay Hill, Warminster, Wiltshire on July 11th, 2010 and the last image was taken the same day in another location in Wiltshire.

The crop circle phenomenon started in Westbury, just three miles north of Warminster in August 1980 and last month 200 crop circles have appeared in one elaborate formation in the nearby village of Mere.

Some believe Westbury's proximity to the prehistoric stone circles at Stonehenge and Avebury is the reason for the strange goings-on.

Others say it is because it lies on the confluence of two so-called leylines, which link spots said to have 'mystical energy'.

Conspiracy theorists put them down to the proximity of Salisbury Plain, home of secret military work.

*One-Armed Man Charged With Unarmed Robbery

masslive - Police charged a one-armed man with unarmed robbery early Wednesday afternoon following an incident that occurred about noon on Wednesday a block away from the police station.

The suspect, Manuel Hernandez, 28, of 52 Avon Place, goes by the street name of Lefty, Sgt. John M. Delaney said.

Hernandez robbed a 58-year-old man of his wallet at the corner of Chestnut and Mattoon streets about noon, Delaney, aide to Police Commissioner William J. Fitchet said. The wallet contained $354 in cash, he said.

The victim reported the robbery at police headquarters, 130 Pearl Street, and provided a description of the suspect.

Sgt. Mark Rolland spotted Hernandez a short time later on Worthington Street and arrested him, Delaney said. The victim identified Hernandez as the man who robbed him.

Police recovered the victim's wallet -- including the $354 in cash -- from Hernandez's pocket.

Hernandez entered an innocent plea at his arraignment Thursday in Springfield District Court. He was ordered held on $10,000 bail and is due to appear in court again on Aug. 12 for a bind-over hearing to determine if his trial will take place in district or superior court.

Romanian Official Responds to Flood Devastated Town: 'We have beautiful shoes for you...'

dailyrecord - A tourism minister sparked outrage by offering female flood victims high-heel shoes.

Romanian politician Elena Udrea turned up in a devastated town with boxes of the slinky black footwear.

She told the disbelieving women: "We have beautiful shoes for you."

She said they were intended to cheer up women who had lost everything.

But one woman in the town of Saucesti said: "I would like to see her try walking over a mud-filled road in high-heel shoes."

The eastern town was hit by severe floods earlier this month.

Rain-swollen rivers burst their banks and killed 22 people across Romania, destroying crops, bridges and hundreds of homes.

In Saucesti, more than 2000 people were evacuated after the River Siret flooded their houses.

Angry locals gathered at the town hall protesting about the failure to start work on a protective dike.

President Traian Basescu promised that the £5million scheme to defend the community from disasters would begin as soon as possible.

Udrea, who also took chocolate to Saucesti for children, later hit back, saying the shoes were part of 20 tonnes of aid she had taken there.

She added : "Women appreciate the chance to be elegant and to not have to wear Wellington boots any more."

...another gem out of Romania...

Dead Man to Get Liposuction to Fit in Burial Casket

Romania's fattest man Cristian Capatanescu, 54, it is to get a post-mortem liposuction so that half of him can be buried in a regular sized coffin - and the other half cremated.

Capatanescu, pictured here being moved by fireman from his home in Ramnicu Valcea, died of multiple organ failure in a Bucharest hospital bed while waiting for doctors to carry out a stomach reduction surgery to help him lose weight.

Now relatives have asked if it would be possible for doctors to cut away a few bits anyway so that he will fit in a regular sized coffin. Capatanescu's family say that they cannot afford a large sized reinforced coffin and as a result want to incinerate part of his body - and bury the rest in a regular sized coffin.

His wife told local media they would have two funerals - a traditional burial and also a service for the part of him that was cremated.

NOTE: I like Anthony Bourdain, even though he's mostly an a**hole (even in person) and he proclaimed my city 'a dump'...but he has a very good show and he does keep it interesting. Tony is schooled by a young fan on a brand new episode of Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations. The new season continues Monday at 10pm E/P on Travel Channel.
