Fortean / Oddball News: Remarkable Triangle UFO, Old 2011 Predictions and No Fear

Remarkable Triangle Shaped UFO Over Santa Clara County, CA

MUFON CMS - near Mountain View, California - 12/15/2010: I was on my patio looking at the stars having a cigarette when I started hearing the sound of what sounded like a small Cessna plane flying over. We don't get any Cessna's flying over so I thought it was strange. I kept watching, and to my total SHOCK I saw a triangle appear over the building next door (apartments). It was flying low enough to make out that it was definitely a triangle with two bright "headlights", and as I watched it fly over me my mouth was dropped wide open, and I was completely speechless. As it passed overhead, I noticed light hitting the undercarriage and it appeared to have some kind of bar across the sides of the bottom, but I could only make out one side of the belly. When it was completely overhead, I noticed a back light on the back tip of the triangle. There was only the three lights though, no light in the center of the belly. It was not using any kind of spot light or anything. It was just traveling overhead like it was on it's own agenda. I popped my head out from the overhang of the patio to really get a good look and see if I was really "seeing" this. It continued flying over my complex, and disappeared from my sight after flying over my building. At that point, I started calling my husband Ron several times, and he just didn't hear me calling for him. I guess I wasn't loud enough.

Like I said, it sounded like a Cessna, but there was no way! It was clearly a triangle. I wasn't scared of it, just shocked. I have seen pictures on TV and in books of the famous "triangle", but never saw one myself. I'd LOVE to see it again. The whole time elapsed was about two minutes. I then looked at the clock and it said 11:00pm (California time).

I tried to go to sleep after at about 12:00 midnight, and found it difficult to fall asleep. As I laid there, I heard that EXACT SAME SOUND AGAIN! I laid in bed (out of shock) and heard it for about an additional 15 minutes!

Now, nearby in Mountain View, we have an old NASA base, but they don't test military planes there. We also have a secret military base up in the Santa Cruz mountains, and God only knows what they do up there. This was smaller than the Stealth, and anyway, it made a motor noise. There's no way it was a hang glider at night either. That's just not possible in the area I live in.

I have always believed in "UFO's", and also believe I had several experiences as a child. But this is the first time in my adulthood that something like this has happened. I hope that it really was a "UFO", and hope to hear from you if your getting any other reports about last night. It wasn't that late, and people were still up.

The picture I am attaching is NOT one I took. It's just the closest I could find on the internet to show what it looked like. Just a few changes though. There was NO light in the center of the undercarriage. Just the three white lights at the tip.

Israeli Air Firce Shoots Down UFO Over Nuclear Plant

cnn - The Israeli Air Force shot down an unidentified flying object over the Dimona nuclear plant in the Negev Desert Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces said.

The object appeared in a designated no-fly zone, the air force was scrambled and the object was shot down, the IDF said.

The object could have been a party balloon, the IDF said, but forces have not yet found the debris to determine what it was.

There have been unconfirmed media reports that it was a motor-driven object. The air force reacted according to procedure when the object was spotted, the IDF said.

The Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz reported that last October "IDF warplanes intercepted an Israeli ultralight aircraft that accidentally flew into the area and forced it to land at an airstrip in southern Israel."

It also reported that "an Israeli surface-to-air missile downed a crippled Israeli fighter-bomber that strayed into the restricted zone" during the Six Day War in 1967. The craft's pilot was killed.

Predictions for 2011...from 1931

npr - Back in 1931, The New York Times asked a bunch of luminaries to predict what the world would be like in 2011. Here are a few of the highlights.

The sociologist William Ogburn was off in a few big ways: He predicted the end of poverty and said the U.S. population would be 160 million (it's nearly twice that). Nevertheless, a lot of what he wrote rings true today:

Labor displacement will proceed even to automatic factories. The magic of remote control will be commonplace. Humanity’s most versatile servant will be the electron tube.... the heterogeneity of material culture will mean specialists and languages that only specialists can understand. ...

Inevitable technological progress and abundant natural resources yield a higher standard of living. Poverty will be eliminated and hunger as a driving force of revolution will not be a danger. Inequality of income and problems of social justice will remain....

The role of government is bound to grow. Technicians and special interest groups will leave only a shell of democracy. The family cannot be destroyed but will be less stable in the early years of married life, divorce being greater than now. The lives of women will be more like those of men, spent more outside the home.

Scientist and inventor Michael Pupin predicted greater income equality:

The great inventions which laid the foundation of our modern industries and of the resulting industrial civilization were all born during the last eighty years ... This civilization is the greatest material achievement of applied science during this memorable period. Its power for creating wealth was never equaled in human history. But it lacks the wisdom of distributing equitably the wealth which it creates. One can safely prophesy that during the next eighty years this civilization will correct this deficiency by creating an industrial democracy which will guarantee to the worker an equitable share in the wealth produced by his work.

For several decades after Pupin made this call, income equality did increase. But the trend didn't hold: Since the 1970s, the gap between rich and poor has grown.

W.J. Mayo, of clinic fame, comes pretty close to the mark:

Contagious and infectious diseases have been largely overcome, and the average length of life of man has increased to fifty-eight years.... The progress that is being made would suggest that within the measure of time for this forecast the average life time of civilized man would be raised to the biblical term of three-score and ten....

Although we may desire to believe only what we can see, our emotions will predominate when crises beyond human understanding confront us, and some form of religion will continue to sustain people in time of stress.

Woman Has Bizarre 'No Fear' Condition

dailymail - A woman who knows no fear because of damage to a key emotion centre in her brain is lucky to be alive, scientists said today.

The US woman, known only as SM, lives in a poor and dangerous neighbourhood and has been the victim of numerous crimes.

She has shrugged off being held at knife and gunpoint, death threats, and assaults, and was once nearly killed by an act of domestic violence.

Yet even when her life was in peril her behaviour 'lacked any sense of desperation or urgency', said researchers. She was simply unafraid.

In tests SM also showed no hint of fear when exposed to snakes and spiders, during a trip to one of the world's scariest haunted houses, or while watching clips of spine-chilling horror films.

But other emotions such as happiness and sadness remained entirely intact.

SM suffers from a rare condition that has destroyed her amygdala, an almond-shaped region of the brain.

The study involving SM is the first to confirm that this brain region is also responsible for experiencing fear in humans.

Reporting on her case today in the journal Current Biology, US scientists said her condition left her vulnerable to walking into dangerous situations.

Neuropsychologist Justin Feinstein, one of the researchers at the University of Iowa, said: 'The nature of fear is survival and the amygdala helps us stay alive by avoiding situations, people, or objects that put our life in danger.

'Because SM is missing her amygdala, she is also missing the ability to detect and avoid danger in the world. It is quite remarkable that she is still alive.'

The biggest surprise for the scientists was SM's reaction to spiders and snakes, both of which she claimed to 'hate'.

Yet at an exotic pet shop she had to be prevented from touching a venomous tarantula, and displayed a 'compulsive desire' to handle the larger and more dangerous snakes.

The researchers also took her to Waverly Hills Sanatorium in Louisville, Kentucky, reputed to be one of the most haunted sites in the world.

Once a year staff at the sanatorium add to the spooky atmosphere by dressing as monsters and ghosts that attempt to frighten visitors.

Amid screams from other members of her tour group, SM could not be scared - and even gave one of the 'monsters' a shock by poking it in the head.

SM 'showed no signs of nervousness or apprehension while walking through dark passageways, and was never visibly frightened by any of the numerous attempts to scare her', the scientists wrote.

The researchers believe the work could lead to better treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other anxiety conditions.

'This past year, I've been treating veterans returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan who suffer from PTSD,' said Mr Feinstein.

'Their lives are marred by fear, and they are oftentimes unable to even leave their home due to the ever-present feeling of danger.

'In striking contrast, the patient in this study is immune to these states of fear and shows no symptoms of post-traumatic stress.

'The horrors of life are unable to penetrate her emotional core. In essence, traumatic events leave no emotional imprint on her brain.'
